- This campy spectacular aired as an episode of "The Wonderful World of Disney" on March 23rd, 1975. Host Lucie Arnaz is joined by Lyle Waggoner and Tommy Tune as they introduce viewers to Walt Disney World's newest attraction, Space Mountain. Wackiness - and polyester - ensues.
Wonderfully campy. Who else is here from Defunctland?
This brings back lots of memories. I was in the Character department and several of us were "hired" by Pasetta Productions to work with the production. I was among the bell boys who welcomed Lucie to the Polynesian Resort, was also one of the aqua lark drivers out in the bay driving around her, also one of the tap dancing toy soldiers that came down from the right ramp and one of the dancing monkeys onstage with Lucie, (but didn’t get a banana). I recall they used tour guides to welcome Lyle Waggoner at the Contemporary. More stories available if anyone’s interested.
Haha, that 's awesome! Please do tell us more if you get the chance. Such a fascinating (and different!) time. Neat to see all that's changed and all that's still the same... And just plain crazy to see the young Scotty Plummer... How many days did they spend shooting this? Also: one thing I can't wrap my head around: I remember from childhood there being a sequence in the Haunted Mansion (which actually scared me and had me a little nervous about going on that ride the first time)...but it's not to be found here. Was certain it would be...will have to keep searching to find that. But good Lord, this show is still just plain incredible!
I loved the dance number for toy wooden soldiers
I remember when this first aired on TV. I sat through the whole hour waiting to see Space Mountain and then all we got were a couple of minutes of it at the end of the show. I guess that was the idea--hype it up so that people would go see it in person.
Ha ha, I was gonna write the exact same thing...and then they didn't even *really* show us the ride, it was superimposed over other things...how sad is it, I still hold a grudge from '75, and I've been on that dang ride a million times since, ha ha... I remembered this special but couldn't remember much about it other than the end, and that the woman who starred in it was kind of obnoxious and couldn't sing too well (Lucy Arnaz! Who knew?), so fun to see it again, and almost on the date it aired a billion years ago...gotta love RUclips!
Can i just go back in time to the 90s.
Saw this when i was a kid and it got us ALL to go to Disney world that year or maybe the next. Space Mountain at the time was fantastic, and given Star Wars was still 2 years away, it and all of Tomorrowland played a pivotal role in my development, that's for sure!
Also thanks for including the laughably bad Movie Surfers segment about Pocahontas 2.
great vintage find from 1975, thanks!
loved those little speed boats as a child
I made a cassette recording of this and listened to it in bed at night. It's just as campy and wonderful as I remembered it.
My heaven I remember this opening for vault Disney. Take me back this type of stuff would come on late at night. N I would stayed up late just to watch the series.
That is so sweet. The commercials take me back too. Loved Sing Me A Story with Belle and the Toon Disney as well as the opening for the Disney Movie time.
WOW!! No more campy than any other show of its type back in the mid-70's - think Bob Hope specials - even the drama-deys like Charlie's Angels looked like this, though they didn't break out into song & dance, I was too busy being a college freshman to catch the original airing of this. So glad you posted it - it was a blast to watch!!
Lyle Waggoner died less then a month ago, right before the COVID quarantine. RIP
Reminds me of when I spent time at Neverland Ranch for three weeks.
Wow! this was aired before my B-day!
My bday is March 31st I was not born lol
I read on Scotty Plummer, and he was only about 31 when he died in a motorbike accident in 1992.
Fort Wilderness train, Treasure Island boat launch...and that's just the first eight minutes
I miss the Disney Channel from the 90's :(
Ilsa Mayra i miss Disney in the 90's

Space Mountain at Walt Disney World. Been there, rode that.
Today there will thousands of cells phone up in the air recording.
I love Tommy Tune, such a spunk. How can any man match up to him?
misskatooshka they are making his hair so glowy avd very sexy. I know his only Tony was 1984 my one and only.
Tommy Tune played Ambrose Kemper, the artist in love with Horace Vandergelder's niece in the 1969 musical "Hello, Dolly!" Vandergelder was played by Walter Matthau, and Dolly was played by Barbra Streisand.
So glad I found your channel.
The Rhodes Kids cross between the early 70's Osmonds & DeFranco Family.

look at Tommy tune hair he's gorgeous.
I was only a little kid when "The Wonderful World of Disney" was shown on TV. They didn't interest me as the Disney movies and cartoon shorts. Just watching and listening to this hour-long corny musical makes me wonder if I might've seen any parts of it. Maybe the Toy Soldiers part? Or maybe the Space Mountain part? Or maybe that part starting at about 10:28? And the *canned laughter*! It gets "activated" whenever Luci Arnaz tells a joke or *anything* that's supposed to be funny would happen. Some are outdated these days, maybe by the 1990's. There may be a few kinda-funny or just-plain-funny jokes while the rest were like "meh". That's sooooo 1970's. I can recall seeing a couple of "The Best of Walt Disney Presents" on The Disney Channel in around '93 or '94. That was when I was willing to pay for it and there were no commercial breaks. One of them was in the 1950's in black-n-white, including the Disney cartoons that were originally in color. The other was in the '60s and in color, particularly the part with the song "We Have a Great Big Beautiful Tomorrow" with anamatronics and stuff. I don't think they would've interest me as a kid, but I was already an adult when I saw them and would prefer them over the 1975 special. As a kid I was at the time, I would rather watch, for instance, "The Apple Dumpling Gang", "The Cat From Outer Space", or "A Tale of Two Critters". Not the best Disney movies, but I would've prefer watching them.
I would watch this every night I loved classic disneyland stuff.
@@MsDisneylandlover Yeah, those were the days when Disney stuff was classic. Not like THESE DAYS! They need to stop messing themselves up.
I was going to say that this looked so cheesy, but looks like plenty of people beat me to it. Still, this brings back plenty of good memories.....I loved it as a kid and still do.
Tommy Tune is almost 40 in this...
I couldn't look away. Cheese-fest '75. Love it; it's so bad, that it's good.
A couple weeks after this aired my dad took me to "Earthquake" in Sensurround. No wonder I spent 10 years in therapy!!
lol
Did RCA sponsor this?
RCA originally sponsored “Wonderful World of Color” along with Kodak and other sponsors, but this episode was sponsored by other companies like Gulf gasoline, and others after RCA ended their sponsorship.
What is the name of the band that played at the Tomorrowland Terrace?
The Rhodes Kids
So totally great and fun. I did have to adjust my 'white' balance 'cause it seemed totally overexposed! ha ha ha. Yeah, I know...different times.
I loved Lucille ball I collect I love lucy stuff yall watch my unboxing on xmas #DisneyDiva.
