Ed Roland and guitar tech John Oliva met with Premier Guitar’s John Bohlinger before a Collective Soul gig at Nashville’s Marathon Music Works. Roland has retired his electric rig in favor of filling the acoustic space in the band, while his brother Dean and guitarist Jesse Triplett do the heavy electric lifting.
Ed Roland rolls with just two acoustics on tour. He spends most of his time playing this Breedlove Legacy 12-string, which has a spruce top figured and maple back and sides.
Dean Roland is a minimalist, gigging with one guitar and one amp. The guitar is an abused and loved 1993 Gibson Centennial Anniversary Les Paul Standard in Wine Red upgraded with a TonePros bridge and saddle. The LP is strung with Ernie Ball Beefy Slinky strings (011-.052).

That turned out to be a great rundown! I was a little worried when the tech blew threw both guitarists gear in like... 4 minutes. But it was nice to just sit and chat with the singer about songwriting and history.
Ed is just SO sweet, SO cute and SO talented. I wish I could just pull him into the biggest hug ever and tell him I love him, and what he's done to make my life so much happier. Collective Soul is my favorite band ever.
I can understand Ed not mentioning anything about Ross, but Joel Kosche spent 13 years as a member of that band, aside from being their guitar tech for years before that. Not to even acknowledge him is a real slap in the face, as well as insinuating Jesse is the only lead guitarist they've had that inspired Ed to leave all the lead work to him. Ross dug his own grave but I've still never heard the reason Joel was fired unceremoniously, without warning, a few weeks before Christmas. And got the band's manager to deliver the phone call.
Joel is a beast of a player and seemed to fit the band nicely.
I was a huge fan as a teenager. It really influenced me on how I approached learning guitar. I can't say I'm a fan of some of the more radio-friendly tunes. And now that I can understand the words, I can't really relate to the almost gospel lyrics. But Ed is a genius. Each song is a lesson on how to arrange and mix guitars. Listen to the 'rabbit' album on headphones and you'll see what I mean.
Had the good fortune to see Collective Soul a couple days ago. They ROCK ! The guitar tones were just awesome :-) Well Done....KEEP UP the GOOD WORKS.
Collective Soul..One of the best bands ever.
It doesn't matter who the band is, Bohlinger always does a fantastic job with these rundowns.
Such a great band. Thanks for the Rig Rundown!
I love how John was just hanging out, relaxing on the amp @3:48.
It's nice to see the mullet's coming back 🎸👍
Connor Byrne that's not a mullet. Not close
Went backstage with them! Awesome guys! We talked about gear all night and had a blast!
Please do a Rig Rundown for Tame Impala, their effects and setup is one of the craziest things ever live.
that would be amazing !
+JustSpencer Them and Battles and Tera Melos
Finally! That RIG was WOW!
OMG...Mr B, that hair is epic😂
I was hoping to see some of Joel Kosche's mirage guitars but it looks like I missed the news that he is no longer in the band. It's still great to hear Ed's stories.
90s were the best era for Gibson IMO! I'm a lucky owner of '91 Gibson Les Paul Classic & '97 Gibson Les Paul Standard all in stock... They are built like a tank and play fantastic. I use the classic mainly for 80s hard rock/metal and the standard for grunge
+1 for the great Elliot Easton!
"YEAH"
This reminded me of that great riff in the song Gel. And it's not a rig rundown without a POG!!
I love it, the accidental rock star, makes me want to watch a live show, off to RUclips, wait already here, lol
157 guitars, Ed!? We need a vid of that!
I love Ed, but I still miss Ross and the melodic hooks he brought
Good stuff! Elliott Easton is indeed awesome!
We want Ross Childress rig rundown
Thanks for saving me time. ✌🏼
I miss Ross
@@nathanadkins4696 every day man. He was a massive influence in rock and he's never talked about
@@chrisbauman2562 I see him whenever I can. He still jams just as tight as he ever did and I got him to sign some of his solo work for me. Such a cool, chill dude.
@@samuelbasye3508 that is an awesome story. I'd kill to have seen him live with collective soul
Not my favorite band, but they've always had great varied guitar tones.
Flyrig is great tool!!!
Wife....how many guitars do you need?
Any guitar player...just one more
John B. why did you wonder if the Duesenberg had intonation problems?
The notations on the video were a plus.
Hey Premier Guitar... we need a new Collective Soul rig rundown. Just saw them live and their setup was different. Jesse's using a switching system and Dean's pedalboard had changed. Just sayin!
They change guitars all the time as well. I believe they did start with personal Gibsons and possibly Fenders, but then went to and probably promoted by PRS by the mid-late 90's. Then the Breedlove he talks about here was actually another promotion they did. Now they're back to having a mix of guitars again. Both Dean and Jesse had Gibson LP's a few weeks ago when I saw them. Will had a red Ernie Ball Bongo. I think Will just picks up whatever he can find in red. lol
I need John Bohlinger's haircut.
could of sworn they had a bass player.
+Thomas McCoy Yabut it would be about 10 seconds: So I see you play your Pbass through these sVT's. ..Yep...done.
I like looking at pbasses and svts
Ace Ventura
His hair looks more like that in the last one of these he did of the Winery Dogs (band consisting of Ritchie Kotzen, Billy Sheehan and Dream Theatre's Mike Portnoy)
guys, what's the opening song of the video? from 0:0-0:14
Delux Bearings I believe it's where the river flows
That’s definitely Shine, but I think it might be the re-recorded version off of Walmart’s bonus disc for See What You Started By Continuing (which is a fantastic album).
it's the solo break in Shine - Ross Childress could seriously shred and had so many melodic hoods. Talk about a severely underrated 90s player - he was legit.
@@ia5662 Yes, that was from Shine. Jesse plays it just as well. I've seen the guy play twice up close and he's just as talented.
was I the only one that thought that was Bill Paxton
Great gear man, great gear! 5 shows left in the states? You aren't gonna last 5 minutes with those fans running around out there! What is the band gonna do now, man!? What are they gonna do!!!!!
I hope they check the white balance next time they film a video.. the purples & blues were giving me a headache. Interesting stuff as far as CS’s rig. As a huge CS fan I wish they’d play more guitars than the keys and affects. Cool that they had their guitar and sound engineer in the video.
Is he wearing an aquabats t-shirt?
Holy Mullet!!!
"I have 157 guitars". Cool, but is it necessary?
yes
Yeah, needs to shot for 200
+Cole Anderson So what?
Wayne Thiessen Just sayin'. I was also wondering what everyone else thought of it.
@@coleanderson9578 I'm just starting to play guitar, and yes, they all have their personalities and sounds. Some days you just want to pick up something different.
since these guys are using 10's, forgot to ask about tunings, I'm preety sure is not standard ...
+TheCollisionofworlds I agree. 10s pretty light, Eb is the lowest I'd tune them. 11s are what I'm comfortable playing.
+Manuel Garcia They'll be in Eb, (even for the older songs which were recorded in E).
+TheCollisionofworlds I use 009 set, when I tune down (D most of the time ) i go for a 010 set .. I keep my floating tremolo guitar with 009 all the time though. and I'm preety sure that tune Shine uses drop D.
10’s for Jesse and Beefy Slinky for Dean 11’s, both 1/2 step down. - Oliva
What’s with the weird blue tint and ace ventura hair?
"timbre" pronounced "tam-ber"
216trixie southern boy accent
is it me or does the video suck and washed in blue?
