I spent 11 yrs in the royal marines and my instructor ( I won't say in what') always said you don't fight to look good you fight to walk away. there are no limits.
Please-do get the Apache knife fighter- I would LOVE to see him show me some of his skills! John, love your videos, you really entertain and teach at the same time, love it! I wish I could afford one of your Bulldogs or Moore-style Bowies, I'm a traditionalist with Bowies. Thanks again, and please do some more on the Moore Bowie-we want more Moore!
Realistically speaking in the days of black powder revolvers when handguns were not 100 percent reliable, what was the most popular weapon of the day for a serious fighter? The Bowie Knife. All due respect to Col. Rex Applegate, Ninjas, ad infinitum the BOWIE is the queen of battle blades and is only out done by an acctual full size sword...History shows us that. Most people today do not realize Bowie knives were banned all over the place in the 19th century. It was the assault weapon of the day
That Frankenstein Knife, and special platform you prepared for it, is a "Museum Piece". If it were classified, I suspect it would be considered an extremely rare artifact!
I was never in the Military, but by growing in a tough environment I learn how to confront people armed with knifes and at least 3 times with guns, and I never was hurt badly, but I got my nose broke 5 times.
Hey John. This is Jacob, I cant wait to start making the bowie handle kits with you. Im excited to see what you did with the micarta handles i sent you. as pertaining to the knife fighting videos, I agree with almost everything you were showing. As I always tell my students, knife fighting isnt a dance, its not supposed to look pretty. master the fundamentals then youll have the basics to fall back on under stress. Great videos and even better knives. Keep it up!
If you all are all about technique and knife fighting why do I hardly see Bowies with D guards these make those knives much more protective and useful for stuff such as punching with the guard
Awesome videos John when i have enough money i will definitely be calling you up, the functionality, aesthetics and styles you guys create are so cool to me and exactly what i want in a big ass mans knife.
me and my brother once sparred , i had a wooden 3 foot long sword i fashioned myself versus his wooden arnis sticks. we ended up cutting and bruising ourselves and had a serious respect for what we had at home.
Well as of September 1st we are now allowed to carry any size and double edge....all of our knife laws here in Tx have been removed from the books..Thank God!
same in Michigan. I haven't yet heard an explanation of why knives and bludgeons are always left out of most carry licenses. I met one guy that thought it is ok to carry guns but no melee weapons.
The best thing he said, and that's something i've heard before, it doens't matters how good you are with a knife, if you go in a knife fight you gonna get cut
Great knives bro. Don't like some of your comments about natives in past since I'm native but I do respect your talents and personality. I love your work and agree very much with your preference for the crusada guards, curved handles, and frog sheaths. I also like the back cut but living in Texas, as you say, it's illegal to carry. Stupid laws but we don't make the laws. We just get locked up. If I had money I'd have one of your blades. Keep up the good work.
I must agree with you nothing beats basics basics basics and more basics practice in the martial arts you have about 20 basic moves and the rest is just a compilation of those moves this is coming from A 30 year martial artist thank you
hey guys I've been watching your videos for the past couple of weeks and I like em you seem pretty knowledgeable so I've subscribed and also I'm actually having a custom Bowie made for me within the next few weeks and I will attach a photo with details and you can tell me what you think thanks guys and great job
He has talked about his pricing before, his personal foot long bowie is around 1.5K, I would imagine a more simple 6 inch tanto with a wood grip is more around 500-700.
Hey John, we loved your knife fighting vids. I also always liked that stag bowie of yours with the shot loaded handle....but seeing the same set up on the more curved Natchez blade is amazing. I want one SOOoooooo bad. Let us know when the kits are available, or when you can do those regularly in the shop. Any price info?
This is the first time I've seen ur channel I like it u guys r knife makers that's bad ass I would love to know how to make em. I'm from texass n I didn't know I wasn't allowed a bowie. I have several knives where r u guys located at
My experience has largely been in collegiate fencing. While it is somewhat applicable to knife fighting there are differences. Not having 30" or so of blade to hide behind changes the dynamics. Regardless, there was a saying floating around that you might find interesting. Who does the best swordsman in France fear? Does he fear the second best swordsman in France? No he does not. He at the very least knows of the second best swordsman by his reputation and has heard about his fighting style. And in a worst case scenario, should the best swordsman lose to the second best swordsman his reputation is still more or less intact. No, the best swordsman in France fears somebody who is totally untrained. He will have no idea what that guy is going to do and how he will react. Worse, the untrained swordsman could get lucky and win. In which case the best swordsman could potentially lose both his life and his reputation.
Cool idea with the natchez bowie kit. Looking forward to that stuff. Don't worry about the haters guys. Haters want to hate just keep doing what you've been doing! Keep it up!
Dont spend time talking about stupid comments, they are not worth it...just show us your knife magic, fun times and let us enjoy.Great to watch your new videos fitzen.
Apache traditional knife fighter? Bring that shit on! I LOVE that historical stuff you can find on RUclips! It's probably why I love Dave Canterbury so much. Now, I don't have a huge Bowie knife, but I'm going to finally go back and watch that video now anyway, haha....
Hey John! Love your videos, do you know of a place I could buy some of those Manookis (spelling?)? I make paracord bracelets and I want to try to incorporate something like that into my designs. Thanks!
Mark Twain said; The best swordsman doesn't have to worry about the 2nd best swordsman, because he knows what to expect. It's the swordsman who never lifted a sword, the amateur, who will do the unexpected, and could kill you.
I don't know shit about knifefightin, but I loved the vids. Dissapointed we didn't get to see rocket show how the chicks do it. I still learned a lot nonetheless.
I think they're on it fairly well, but just expanding the key to training is hard sparing/free-play. I'll bet those Apache knife fighters went at in free play, grappling and hitting each other with the knives. no baroque Parry-riposte modern fencing. Cool knives and has John ever worked with ARMA members? Trying to join it myself. These guys are trying to bring back late medieval/Renaissance sword and other weapons of the time. I think John would like Grosse Messers.
I have a question if someone can pleass answer for me. I own very many knives of all makes and brands. But no cold steel knives. So my question is are Cold Steel knives really some of the best out there for there price? I mean I see some on there site like a 2 inch blade folding knife for around $110.00.
Try Wisconsin. Nothing over three in. length, owning a switchblade at all is a felony, no double-edges, even assisted openers are usually illegal. But you can carry a gun unconcealed no problem, and hunters safety alone lets you conceal it >.
The only time trainings really useless is going up agaisnt multiple targets as you'll resort to instinctive basic cuts, slashes and thrusts but 1 on 1 hell yeah trainings hugely essential it's the reason I'm alive I got in a fight the guy had a Bowie I had a Kabar 1211 he thrusted it at me and I pulled his arm passed me stabbed him in the wrist and shoved my knife through his jugular and then put some distance between me and him and called the cops he died long before they arrived if I didn't know any moves he'd have probably had time to recover from that thrust and start swinging at me and I'd have taken some nasty cuts
I always got injured the most sparring white belts and black belts. The first because they're all assholes and elbows and the second because of their proficiency.
+NEEDMY BLADE It's not wanting to be able to do anything. Face the reality that this is a serious topic. These knives are purpose built for defense. Blade to flesh is the reality. It's like buying defensive ammunition or taking a firearms training course. You don't talk about its effectiveness or how much energy it dumps into a body, or know how to engage a target putting rounds in the appropriate area with max efficiency because you wish to cause great bodily harm or death, but because you face the reality that God forbid you may be put into a situation where you may have to defend your friends or family or yourself from a life or death situation. History shows us that bad things can happen to good people anywhere at anytime. Fighting martial arts are no different in their extreme. Case in point, MMA. You are watching guys beat the daylights out of each other getting all bloodied up. If there were no refs, people would die. Carrying a huge knife is no more necessary than carrying ANY handgun over .380 caliber. In a life and death situation your probably dumping half a mag into your attacker form the massive adrenaline surge before you realize you fired the first round. Also would like to point out that a guy defended his house with a Katana.
I spent 11 yrs in the royal marines and my instructor ( I won't say in what') always said you don't fight to look good you fight to walk away. there are no limits.
As the saying goes,In a knife fight. One goes to the hospital.........The other the morgue.
John, Charlie, your stuff is great; no nonsense, no BS, just real world, myth busting material. Thank you and keep up the great work.
No one wins a knife fight you survive one
Texas 2021 can have anything now.Any size or edge configuration.
My thoughts on the government in Texas, I'm a Texan and i agree with you. They are kinda stuck numskulls.
Please-do get the Apache knife fighter- I would LOVE to see him show me some of his skills! John, love your videos, you really entertain and teach at the same time, love it! I wish I could afford one of your Bulldogs or Moore-style Bowies, I'm a traditionalist with Bowies. Thanks again, and please do some more on the Moore Bowie-we want more Moore!
you guys need to do videos like this all the time. nowadays its like once in a blue moon we get these kinds of great knife videos.
It was the assault weapon of the day
LOVE the blades! The Art of combat combined with the wounderful mastepieces you create is the ultimate blade lovers high!
That Frankenstein Knife, and special platform you prepared for it, is a "Museum Piece".

D guards raise some legal issues in some places.
Awesome videos John when i have enough money i will definitely be calling you up, the functionality, aesthetics and styles you guys create are so cool to me and exactly what i want in a big ass mans knife.

me and my brother once sparred , i had a wooden 3 foot long sword i fashioned myself versus his wooden arnis sticks. we ended up cutting and bruising ourselves and had a serious respect for what we had at home.

same in Michigan. I haven't yet heard an explanation of why knives and bludgeons are always left out of most carry licenses. I met one guy that thought it is ok to carry guns but no melee weapons.
I cant wait to see the kit for the cold steel blades
Really great looking knives. Can't wait to see these kits, sounds very sensible.
The best thing he said, and that's something i've heard before, it doens't matters how good you are with a knife, if you go in a knife fight you gonna get cut

John Fitzen needs to have a website to sell his knives on. He’s passing up tens of thousands of dollars a year I bet by not doing that.

Looking forward to the Laredo Bowie kit
Hey John! Love your videos, do you know of a place I could buy some of those Manookis (spelling?)? I make paracord bracelets and I want to try to incorporate something like that into my designs. Thanks!

Nothing wrong at all being an expert in knife fighting, as long as you and your buddies are not the one determining that.
