How the hell can someone come to this channel and complain about the beeping from Sorin's multimeter ? That honestly blows my mind ! Thats like someone watching a cooking video at some channel and complain about the blender noise or the microwave beeps or the timer dinging . . . . . .

"I can't believe...." some people would whinge about the volume of the 'beep'. Myself, I can believe that we live in a world full of people who complain about minor issues while the important occurrences in our lives go right over their heads. Your videos are a wonderful source of both entertainment and information. Your sense of humour is on another level.

not the beep is the problem. The problem for me is that it is too loud compared to Sorin's speaking voice so everytime I see him measuring short I remember to lower the volume because high pitch loud constant noise is irritating after a while for many people. So it would be good for me and I think many other people if it would be balanced out a bit if it is possible.

Nice to see a video on this laptop, thanks
Can't see though precisely where the probe points are placed on the motherboard 😞
Also many meters beep when below a certain resistance which doesnt necessarily mean a short, ie it would of interest to see what the display shows if on Ohms or if on diode mode ie V drop as some meters offer a beep if Vdrop below some value
Edit: The top left display wasnt on long enough to see if it was a full short or just low resistance which might indicate not a complete short, you prob know your meter better than I do re ohm scale -> beep
Ah ha - I see the power points across either of the two 25v rated electrolytics to the immediate left of the input 19v jack :-)

As a recommendation.. it is good practice to check for short between the main rail and all the coils on the board before injecting power into the main rail. If there is a short found, the coil can be removed and in this way you can save whatever is on that line when you inject power, or you can backtrack your shorted mos-fet for that coil and replace it.

Sorin, if you thermal cam allows, adjust the colours so the red on the screen starts a good bit into the current black area (cold tenp range, just set it above room temp - say 27C). this will make it more sensitive and show up lower heat levels

I've watched this video only because I have 1 nitro 5 here atm. My customer was rude, but I found mosfets shorted. Didn't even had to use thermal camera. They were on the main 19V rail. The first one did get 19V and released only 2V. I'd fix it and test if that's the only issue, but, with my customer's attitude, this is back in one piece again and a no-fix for him. Not sure if there's a recording about this problem with this Nitro 5 even.

I have a Nitro 5 AN515-51 that I bought on eBay. The guy had been using it with the screen surround falling apart, the left side was completely detached and the screen mount was damaged. The screen cable had been trapped. He said, "doesn't power on", but it does. The backlight didn't work. I could see with a torch the "No bootable device" icon, so I replaced both the screen, and the screen cable as I didn't like the condition of both. I've also replaced the hinges, lid, and bezel. There's still no backlight. Is there a fuse somewhere?

My acer gaming laptop 2.1 ghz amd runs for 1 h 15 min at regular use , and 1 h 5 min for average gaming, 35 min if I play cod 4 on battery. I swapped the cells to Asus battery cells, pink capacity is 2.2 A, others support 2.1 A. 11.1 V can be formatted to 10.8 V, quite hard. Acer needs 10 discharges in Windows, 11th discharge in Bios. After some cycles of this method , new features turn on by the battery's eprom, supporting better gaming, faster video card, less fan noise, less heat, and also deletes regional blacklist of cheaper laptops. It is the elite mode, starting back in the old days, with the Compaq LTE Elite laptop, the elite mode depends on how the battery was calibrated with this method. A coil is heating up at the display in bios or dos mode. In windows, the coil is off. Recognized by the battery's chip, acts as a yes/no in Bios. The number of these features could be 10-20, so it needs 200 discharges in Windows, 20 in bios to turn them all.

Just had my Asus Tuf Gaming Ryzen 9 laptop repaired out of warranty.
They changed out the entire motherboard without clearly identifying any fault... after first replacing the PSU (which seems to have fried the motherboard while failing).
They seem to have accepted that the PSU was failing while under warranty (it was playing up)... and replaced it out of warranty.
They also replaced the motherboard out of warranty (gratis):
Maybe they have a known manufacturing fault that caused the problem and felt a bit guilty?
I've had a few of these kinds of failures in the past mostly (but not exclusively) on Asus laptops.
All my other Asus equipment (motherboards, routers, etc...) is very reliable.
It's really annoying if you just spend over $2K on a laptop (which you barely use and treat with kid gloves)... only to find that it fails out of warranty (~8 months).
Either way I'm very grateful that Asus was so reasonable.
Laptop failures appear to be way too common:
Failures seem to mostly occur out of warranty (2 years on this laptop)... so the manufacturers usually don't have to deal with them.
It's probably limited to certain models? Gaming laptops?
You seem to suggest that Mosfets and capacitors are common culprits.
The capacitor you replaced appears to have died because of a manufacturing defect.
Is this common? Or are most failures due to user error?
Pity warranties are so short on even high end laptops?
Credit card purchase insurance can cover some of the gap... but realistically the manufacturer should address this issue?
Short warranties (many/most are only 1 y) encourage manufacturers not to care about failures in years 2-3.
A 3 year warranty would suggest that the equipment is built of quality parts
Safest strategy seems to be to buy a second hand laptop on the assumption that if it's lasted this long it won't fail any time soon?
    ...plus it's cheaper.
    🙂

Sorin, why are you talking about 1, 2 or 3V with shorted Mosfet, when you have only 0.9 V PSU voltage? Voltage drop was from 0.9 to 0.3 V. What % in voltage drop signals shorted Mosfet and what shorted cap? Thank you for the explanation.

    • @electronicsrepairschool
      @electronicsrepairschool  Год назад +2

because of the ohms law, in order to push current in to a resistance, you have to have certain voltage, if you have a shorted mosfet, then in serial mode the cpu or gpu, there you have around 4ohms, so you will have to higher the voltage in order to push current

Last night when i was finnished using my laptop, i turned it off and unpluged the power cabel (i have it pluged in all the time when i use). the laptop worked perfectly. this morning when i tried to boot it up, it showed no signs of life. usually the power button lights up but not this time. i pressed the little nova button on the side of the laptop using a paper clip, still not booting. disasebled it, removed the battery and tried with only the power cable, still no go. i have done every electrixty drain method listed online without any results. i noticed that the little led no longer lights up when i plug in the ac cord, so it might be the psu? idont have access to another ac cabel to test it out but i doubt its due to it because it worked normally 8 hours earlier.

Actually all the thermalpads should be changed and also the paste. Laptops usually have a very bad cooling solutions and everything should be very optimal. Even then laptops usually throttle. That acer nitro is not a very powerful machine, only has few heatpipes, Laptops always have cooling problems after few years of heavy use.
