As a beginner, when listening to random music, I'm discovering my ear is seeking the progression. Pop is soooo basic but jazz and a lot of gospel require a little more effort. But I whole heartedly agree that in gospel music, training the ear to the singer is paramount.
Who would dislike this lesson and the knowledge beng made available. I'm so grateful that finally I've found an instructor that is willing to be a blessing to the body of Christ. Warren, I tell people that same thing. There’s a difference between hearing and listening. I’ll reference something technical in a piece of music and point it out to them and they don’t hear it like I do. Great point!
Warren, I have gone through so many RUclips videos trying to find someone with the "patience" to, not only, share their knowledge, but to also teach with the zeal in knowing that people, who, like myself, really want to learn to understand and play piano / keyboards. I took piano lessons back in the late 60s / early 70s and I even had a little singing group. After a few lessons, I decided to just play by ear. Well, now that I am 60 years of age, I realize now how much I should have stayed with it and practiced more. I do have an ear for singing ( I sing TENOR), however, I want to obtain the same ear for playing piano. I am so glad that I stumbled across your videos. I do know how to play the scale... thank goodness. I really think it would benefit me to join your lessons on line.

Dear bro , To be honest it’s a very important skill that every gospel musician should have . I have been playing by ears for quite a few years in my church . I feel it’s a must need skill for every musician . Some times in the church singer may sing in the middle and as you rightly said to find the key by listening is a very important skill and challenging. The development is a slow journey, and there’s no way of calculating this. The most important things you can do are: 1. Find a solid solution to follow 2. Be consistent with the practice I’m bias, so you know I’m gonna recommend my program 😎

To be honest, at the end of the day it doesn’t matter what you use. Sulfege are just syllables, so you can make up your own, or you can use number. If it makes sense to you and your making progress, that’s the most important thing. I use sulfege because what’s why I was taught, and the system has been around for hundreds of years.

Any advice for singing the high notes ? It is getting harder above G4... I have absolutly no vocal technique at all. My range seems to be A3-A4, I really can't go lower and getting higher is doable but really hard. (I like to sing the A major scale, but want to do the C Major correctly too.)
There are many reasons one might not able to sing high note, most important one is understanding your natural range first. With training and technique anyone can sing high notes. Unfortunately that’s not my area of expertise. I’m recommend checkout the vocal channels and see what tips they offer. Thanks,

Hye Warren, I am trying to teach "ear training" to my 5 years old son. I tell him we are going to play a "note guessing game". But he doesn't really understand the benefit of it (yet) and I am having a hard time getting him to stay focus and to do it 5 minutes a day. Any tips ?
Create an incentive that he understands - something that he really like and promise him if he gets through the exercise he’ll have this awesome treat etc... Also start with only 2mins then each week you add an extra minute until you get to 5mins.

Warren, when you want to transcribe/play by ear a piece that you feel is in a minor (aeloian) key, would you solfege "Do Re Me Fa So Le Te Do" or "La Ti Do Re Mi Fa So La" ? And why ?

David you gave two options and asked which is best to us and I suggest the “La Ti Do..” Using that sulfege make sense because it outlines the minor scale in the right order. Can’t use the major scale sulfege as that would mess up your total center
