Great video!👍🏽There is another way to solve this issue which I did on my Duke 390 2015 model. Changed the rear sprocket to that of Duke 250. This increased the top end a bit but reduced the torque. Stock A/F ratio on this is insufficient to produce enough torque to drive a larger rear sprocket at low RPMs. This issue can be solved in two ways, increase torque by reducing front sprocket size or decrease torque by reducing rear sprocket size. Both work well. First one, what you have done here I felt gives a more aggressive change and is good for offroading. The second one seemed better for highway rides as it smoothened the torque curve throughout the rev range..
I've ran my first set of chain and sprocket out and I'm looking to change the final gearing on my 390 Duke as well. This was super helpful, thank you so much :)
May be a side by side comparison with stock bike (DCVs bike) & your bike with respect to city riding, acceleration & to speed will be highly appreciated.
It's a good info on the solution. I believe the mileage will reduce as per the drive train change to lower radius front sprocket should not matter much. Top end will definitely reduce. Let us know please. Nice and very good info 👍
Abhinav, good stuff! Can the sprocket change be done at the KTM service centers or do we need to take it to a local mechanic? Also, any idea if this gonna impact the warranty?
Assuming that the Adv 390 maxes out at 175 kph then with 14t sprocket swap, the top speed would be 175*14 /15 = 163.33 kph. This speed is plenty enough for the Indian conditions.
Good job. I rode it on the highway and I was okay with it. But off-road I think this gearing could help a lot. What do you think about instead putting a larger sprocket on the back? And if it will be as cheap and direct? PS: what's your vlogging setup? The voice is very clear!
The rear sprocket will cost 10 times at least. I got one made out of stainless steel and it was for Rs 2,500. Back then I did not know that the Duke 250 sprocket would fit. Both do the same job. I use a Hero 7 with an external mic. Some Rs 350 generic from Amazon.

Hey Abhinav , before the 1000 kms are crossed was there any rev limiter that stops the engine from revving harder and letting the bike go on a top speed. I did apx 120 kms yesterday from delhi to karnal and felt that the bike was being pushed back and not revving freely. Is it supposed to not freely rev to 10000 rpm even if the shift light settings are not enabled before crossing 1000 kms. Brother, I have adv 250, and Can I do this modification ? As I am also facing the same issue with the bike. Will a 14 teeth sprocket wiil work inplace of the stock one ???
Heyy you said that there might be SPEEDOMETER error as the bike measures speed using the front sprocket. Did it change? And isn't the speedometer sensor on either of the tyre?
@abhinav bhatt: with lower tooth sprocketing I believe you are looking at comparatively shorter drive chain life and a slight sacrifice of the top end. But regardless, I suppose for daily riding and sedate cruising going one tooth down makes sense. Also Rolon chain alone only costs about 800-900 in the aftermarket scene so shouldn't cost you a moon when the time comes to replace it.

Glad to know that there aren't any speedo errors. Before I do the sprocket change, can you let me know what rpm the engine does at 100 and 120 kmph in 6th gear? Normally it is 6000rpm at 100 kmph and 7000+ at 120kmph.

Top notch content. 👍 Could you please share some insights on INT 650, specifically with regards to the performance due to shorter front sprocket. I am planning to buy that, please help me. Thanks!
Thanks for the update video, very informative.....is there a way to save the abs settings so that it doesnt switch on when the bike stalls or just want to load my settings
ABS stays the way you left it. It is the traction control that resets every time you switch the bike off and then start it. There is no way to fix that right now. I am in talks with someone to come up with a solution. Might take time. Will update when I have something to share along these lines.
@@abhinavbhatt oh I got them mixed up ...heard there is something called the ktm dongle which basically saves your settings ..idk if it is available for 390adv.
Hai Abhinav. I have a doubt. Is it ok to revv high for too long on highways with this setup. I am planning to shorten the gears for more bottom end, but also skeptical to take it on highways long trip.
Bro, this upgrade, of the sprocket. You said that there may be a change in the actual rpm and the rpm on the instrument cluster, is it so? And did anything else changed because of the new shorter gearing besides low end?
What I meant was the bike has to rev more to maintain any speed due to the shorter gearing now. There are no false readings at all, if that is what my message conveyed. Top speed is down to 166 kmph.
I just changed my engine oil from motul to liqui moly street race 10w-50. Just wanted to know if dats ok to do? Because it’s a new bike 5 months old and m scared. I own duke 250 bs6. Will b waiting for your reply..
Hey Abhinav! Love your videos alot! Currently i have a RE Thunderbird 500 i wanted to have engine modifications done to improve its performance can you suggest some and a good aftermarket exhaust! Thank you so much for your videos they are alot informative!
Great.. But is there any speedometer error since u said in the earlier video that it was calculated on sprocket rotation. Usually it is on front wheel.. no idea abt 390 adv
Didn't this effect the ABS and electronics? One of the reasons I want to change from the Kawasaki X300 is that KTM is lower revving and doesn't scream when accelerating, I must admit I didn't notice the problem with the revs at low speed on my demo ride. I have always had large capacity bikes up until the Kawasaki and I don't miss the power and speed, just hate the high revs.
All this needs is a cartridge kit for the front suspension to fully function. For now only YSS is available in india. You can get a kit for 25-30k from bikersdna or motousher (instagram). They also have fully adjustable rear suspension too 🤘
I am okay with the front suspension but the rear suspension just doesn't agree with my back. I desperately need an adjustable unit. I'm in talks with Zedling Suspension too over it.
After reading all of your comments finally found out something useful. I would like to modify the rear suspension too ? How can I reach you ? Thank you very much
I hope they do. It is bad enough KTM India thought skipping adjustable suspension for India was a good idea. The damn quickshifter - and who the hell needs a quickshifter on a touring bike - is harsh. I don't even feel like using it.
I wonder how this low end problem suddenly came up now ? I mean, this engine was always there with us in the form of 390 duke and KTM says it's not been changed at all for the 390 adventure. And if this problem has surfaced due to making the engine BS6 compliant, then does 2020 BS6 390 Duke also has the same low end issue ?
No replacement for displacement.(650 vs373) And two is always better than one (Two cylinder). So REInter650 is a clear winner. Electronic for 373cc are not so important.
Try an extensive ride on both. Then decide. If the roads are very smooth, go with the Interceptor, otherwise the KTM is better for broken roads. But if you are not going to cross 120, why don't you look at the Himalayan, Mojo and the BMW G310 GS as well. All very capable bikes.
Try using Power from HP or XtraPremium from Indian oil as opposed to regular fuel. Its only 3 or 4 bucks more expensive but it makes a world of difference to the low end power delivery. Also, it keeps your fuel lines and injectors clean.
This being an adventurer tourer am more interested in knowing how it would handle something like a trip to ladakh or a bit more adventurous like sangla valley. Now I know technically every bike can pull that out if you know your bike inside out but still as am hoping it would be a trendsetter in that category.
Nice video informative video A. I test rode the adv and till 5th gear here are my observations for the speed for an upshift. Can you share the same info with the new 250 sprocket ? 1st : 1 to 19 kmph 2nd : 20 to 34 kmph 3rd : 35 to 45 kmph 4th : 46 to 60 kmph 5th : 60 + I am torn between choosing an interceptor and adv 390. Interceptor for being simpler in nature and for that beautiful refined engine but ktm for the longer travel suspension and the lightness and nimbleness. The Inter is heavier and may not have enough of wind protection as compared to the adv. The ktm has terrible low end. I do 70 per cent in city and 30 percent on the highways. Your feedback is much appreciated.
They both have their strengths. Very difficult to compare them. I love the Interceptor for the character it has - brings a smile to my face every time. But this KTM is really special. It is a sports bike in the guise of a touring bike. Best would be to ride them back-to-back and gauge which works better for you.
This.., torn between these two, other than the suspension on the adv 390, is there any other advantage over the interceptor. The interceptor makes up for that in the looks alone. If I got the interceptor, would look into suspension upgrade to make it more of a scrambler and be done. I think that would be the best of both worlds.
@@jhetro123 and the seating bench is way wider than the narrow seat on the interceptor for both pillion and rider. This can be modified by add foam on the seat
I noticed two things. 1. You entered a red stoplight. While others jumped it, you were speaking to the camera and yet stopped. Good presence of mind. 2. I see the quickshifter is pretty shit. You almost never use it. No offense though. Lol. Good video though! And do keep the good content!

Glad to know that there aren't any speedo errors. Before I do the sprocket change, can you let me know what rpm the engine does at 100 and 120 kmph in 6th gear? Normally it is 6000rpm at 100 kmph and 7000+ at 120kmph.
I'll check this Sunday. If I remember correct, it was either 500 or 1000 rpm extra. But I am not too certain right now. I'll do a comprehensive test soon.
Abhinav, i have a question for you. Will it be problematic if we keep switching between 14T sprocket and 15T sprocket.? Will that affect the engine.?
No. Shouldn't be an issue.
Top notch content. 👍
Could you please share some insights on INT 650, specifically with regards to the performance due to shorter front sprocket. I am planning to buy that, please help me. Thanks!
Do take a look at my last video. It is on my Interceptor 650 with a smaller sprocket and performance.
@@RajeshZmoke I don't think it is available for the 390 yet.
eagerly waiting for r15 videos
Hai Abhinav.
I have a doubt.
Is it ok to revv high for too long on highways with this setup. I am planning to shorten the gears for more bottom end, but also skeptical to take it on highways long trip.
How fast do you intend to go on the highway for long? Keep it around 7k and you'd be okay
The speedometer will now show 7-8% positive error after switching to lower teeth sprocket. But I think it is managable.
No, it won't. The speeds on this bike are measured by the front wheel. I checked on the paddock stand.
Do you have a link for ordering the 14t sprocket?
Hi Abhinav, nice work.Where can you procure only sprocket, because in our city KTM dealer is only selling whole chain sprocket kit. Please guide
I bought it from my KTM service centre. They are bound to sell you any part you want.
@@abhinavbhatt Thanks for reply.I will ask them.
Beautiful roads of Delhi. Just booked my adv 390. Love from B'lore
@@abhinavbhatt okay okay, thanks for the info.
Very informative video bud.. I like the way you do the analysis.. keep the osmness flowing..👍
Thank you, Ritesh :)
Hey Abhinav, can the front sprocket of Duke 390 also be replaced by Duke 250's? This is also specifically in line with the knocking problem.
Hi bro did you replace it ? If yes kindly give me the review
@@darshanraut554 I didn’t man! Been living with it.
How did you overcome the front headlight rattling issue?
Sir is the bike suitable for a tall guy (6feet.2inch)..and what about r15
It should be, but standing up and riding will be difficult. R15 would be cramped for a 6'2 guy.
Hello Abhinav!
If I'm not wrong you live in B-"x", Vasant Kunj.
Btw I really enjoy your videos!
Regards
Yeah. But let's not reveal that 'X', please :)
I just changed my engine oil from motul to liqui moly street race 10w-50. Just wanted to know if dats ok to do? Because it’s a new bike 5 months old and m scared. I own duke 250 bs6.
Will b waiting for your reply..
Can you tell me what was done exactly to reduce the windscreen shaking/vibration at low speed please.
Hey Abhinav! Love your videos alot!
Currently i have a RE Thunderbird 500 i wanted to have engine modifications done to improve its performance can you suggest some and a good aftermarket exhaust!
Thank you so much for your videos they are alot informative!
Hi. See if AEW or Red Rooster make for the 500. Also check if Powertronic makes a piggyback ECU for it.
Thank you so much!
Where did you get that part? KTM seems not to have it in theirs catalog.
Great.. But is there any speedometer error since u said in the earlier video that it was calculated on sprocket rotation. Usually it is on front wheel.. no idea abt 390 adv
No. I was wrong on that. It is calculated on the front wheel. So no error whatsoever.
Mt15 has very low torque ie. 14.1Nm
But it's low end is damn unbelievably awesome
It can go as low as 25kmph in 5th gear..
Plz tell mic used in this video
Some generic Rs 300 mic from Amazon.
@@abhinavbhatt Can you give the link
@@MOTORVAULT Don't have it now. Sorry.
Is there any issue while gear changing with quick shifter after this mod. Will it affect millage ??
Quickshifter feels a bit hard. But it always did. So I won't attribute that to the smaller sprocket.
Hi abhinav. My dealer told me that would create problems with the engine. Should I trust him or just go ahead and change the sprocket?
Are they speaking out of experience? I have been using it for a week and I haven't faced any issues.
@@abhinavbhatt cool then I would also try and get it done. Thanks much
Didn't this effect the ABS and electronics?
@@abhinavbhatt will wait for the mod. Always enjoy your content ❤️
@@saswatawap5 Thanks
After reading all of your comments finally found out something useful. I would like to modify the rear suspension too ? How can I reach you ?
Thank you very much
This is now in my to-do list for this week . Hope this fixes my bike bitchy mood on low ends. 🙏🙏
Let me know how it goes.
Is KTM gonna solve the quick shifters problem?
By any ecu update or something??
Or will it be the same?🤔
I hope they do. It is bad enough KTM India thought skipping adjustable suspension for India was a good idea. The damn quickshifter - and who the hell needs a quickshifter on a touring bike - is harsh. I don't even feel like using it.
Suggestions for honda hornet modification....
Hornets rear sprocket size is even bigger than duke 390. It has 47 teeth at the rear and 15 teeth at the front.
What camera and mic setup?? It's Soo good
GoPro Hero 7 with mic adapter. Some generic Amazon Rs 350 mic.
Also, I am close to 2nd service (10k kms) of my INT 650. Kindly suggest which engine oil and flush should I use?
If you want to retain warranty, stick to what RE recommends. If you can do without it, Liqui Moly Race Street is very good. I use it.
Beast mode on @ 9:10 😍🤩
Bro i also felt the small lag in low eng on my bs6 duke 390 can i change the front sprocket ... Will it affect the initial pull
Yes.
@@abhinavbhatt tnx for the reply bro.. Is the drop in initial pul noticeable
Others do review,
Abhinav does syllubus.
🔥👌
Hi does the sprocket swap has any effect on the suspension, ride height?
looks to be a great mod! Does it null the warranty?
I'm not sure. Haven't asked KTM that. Service centre provides great help so mostly it depends on that.
should i go for duke 390 adventure or interceptor 650, I do mostly touring and probably not going to go above 120 so comfort is a priority
interceptor exhaust note is orgasmic 💯🔥 ktm is bit tricky thing to me !
No replacement for displacement.(650 vs373)
And two is always better than one (Two cylinder).
@@abhinavbhatt please dont recommend mojo, the bike is great but you know after sales of Mahindra
@@abhinavbhatt thanks...My brain says duke 390 adv, my heart says interceptor. Guess i have to ride them both before deciding.
Can we fix the same
issue with old Duke 390
I have the same SPIDI gloves , for how much n from where did u bought them ?
Try using Power from HP or XtraPremium from Indian oil as opposed to regular fuel. Its only 3 or 4 bucks more expensive but it makes a world of difference to the low end power delivery. Also, it keeps your fuel lines and injectors clean.
I usually only use Speed 97 on all my bikes, but this being a bike that will see highway miles, I want to stick to basic fuel.
This being an adventurer tourer am more interested in knowing how it would handle something like a trip to ladakh or a bit more adventurous like sangla valley. Now I know technically every bike can pull that out if you know your bike inside out but still as am hoping it would be a trendsetter in that category.
I think it would do perfectly fine. A guy (RUclips channel: Dream Chaser) just did Spiti on it. You might want to take a look at his series.
What about of roads ? Did it perform better?
Nice video informative video A. I test rode the adv and till 5th gear here are my observations for the speed for an upshift. Can you share the same info with the new 250 sprocket ?
1st : 1 to 19 kmph
2nd : 20 to 34 kmph
3rd : 35 to 45 kmph
4th : 46 to 60 kmph
5th : 60 +
I am torn between choosing an interceptor and adv 390.
@@jhetro123 heavier weight could be one thing that comes to mind though I haven't ridden it extensively
@@abhinavbhatt I was told by ktm showroom that the warranty would be void by changing the sprocket
Yeah. I don't jump lights and I don't like the quick shifter on this bike. Jerky, slow.
