- U.S. Marines conduct refinement on a UH-1Y Venom, fire a GAU-17/A minigun (M134 Minigun) and GAU-21 Machine Gun during Weapons and Tactics Instructor (WTI) course.
WTI is a seven-week training event hosted by MAWTS-1 cadre, which emphasizes operational integration of the six functions of Marine Corps aviation in support of a Marine Air Ground Task Force and provides standardized advanced tactical training and certification of unit instructor qualifications to support Marine Aviation Training and Readiness and assists in developing and employing aviation weapons and tactics.

Well it is still a 50cal with 1200 rpm
So satisfying to hear that sweet M134 Minigun just shooting non stop at more than 1000 RPM, making it sound like an electric toothbrush vibrating! :)
the M2 (maybe M3) was even more impressive in some regards ... sounded like 600 rpm 50 cal !

Here's an interesting fact, people. The M134 Minigun was created in the 1960s by General Electric. The same company that made the dishwasher, stove and/or microwave you bought made this.

That machine gun firing from the port side of the Huey looks like the Browning M-2 .50 cal that we used in Vietnam. But I never saw one used in a Huey back then... Semper Fi. Treetop, USMC, 1968-71

They're probably shooting nothing. The bullets are hitting american soil. This looks like the Twentynine Palms US marine corps training and bombing ground (which is right next to the MCAGCC, a base full of troops and civilians). The fact that this is a helicopter makes it even more likely that this is the case, as MCAGCC 29 palms doesn't have an airstrip long enough for airplanes to take off. Only VTOL aircraft can really be flown here. The Mojave Desert atmosphere and ground in 29 Palms really helps prepare marines for the middle east.
