One of the few blast beat drummers who keeps it interesting. So many drummers today focus on speed and perfection, but their style is mechanical. Smith is in the same league as Lombardo, he starts by nailing the groove.
@emericashoes i believe pete sandoval is the original creator of the blast beat. while pete used one foot blasts, mike created the double foot blast which most bands use today. so he didn't create it, he just came up with a different style of blasting
@arise212 it depends on what you call a blast the original was played with the snare hits in between mike smith came up with the hammer blast or suffo blast where all the hits are all together snare kick and cymbal are all played as sixteenths together...so mike smith invented that blast...sandoval was a pioneer of the original alternating blast
Those blast beast are blindingly fast, and his double bass technique is tight -- sounds like machine gun fire. To maintain chops like that is almost inhuman! Where does he get the stamina? He must practice several hours a day.
He is an innovator of blasting. He has been doing it since the band formed and possibly before then. Mike Smith is a damn drum god and great inspiration.
@UnshackledMind86 I think he's got one of those real weird death metal kind of styles where both his hands are doing such strenuous work that his style almost becomes very open handed and ambidextrous looking. By the looks of the position of his ride i'd say he's left handed but in this style of music it becomes hard to tell.
I actually think Charlie Benante invented the blast beat...if you remember the track "Milk" off of Speak English or Die by S.O.D. that song contained a blast beat which came out in 1985. Smith is an amazing drummer though!

Definitely agree with this comment, Mike is the Dave of death metal for sure if there was such a comparison
mike smith is the king of death metal drumming.
This is the legendary blast beat Mike Smith created in Suffocation! Legendary drummer and blast beat inventor!
amazing mike smith inventor of the Blast Beat
This is a bunch of satanic noise.
@@civicstsjumbo9760 lmao how did you get here
That was awesome!!!!!!
This man is an absolute enigma. 🤘🏼
I read in a interview that Mike was 17 when Effigy came out. This song is from that album O.O
Mike is such a no-nonsense power player.His work is missed in Suffo.
I always wonder how he manages to maintain good volumes at the last strokes in every goddamn fill, just take a look!

He is absolutely not the inventor, though he is a huge innovator of it, and is probably the best example of Blast beat proficiency in all of Metal.

@roady05 He's right-handed he's plays open-handed like a lefty because he want's his snare to have more power in its hit
@emericashoes
sorry dude, in my opinion, true blast beat pioneers are mick harris and pete sandoval... but mike would be third, for sure! :)
antoine audagiori You are right about Sandoval. A blast pioneer.
I'd say he did invent the "Suffo" straight blast though.
@emericashoes innovator*** not inventor
@arise212 true statement
@CelestialSactuary803 no it is not
@arghydoodles Habitual Infamy
@arise212 Sorry, but Sandoval not inventor of blast beat. The inventor is Mick Harris of Napalm Death.
