um, that's the point... the shield will take the damage on behalf of your team. you have to get that free shield or else you will be insta-killed by the boss's ult.
the beta tests (without the train and the free shield you're talking about) show almost every character being utterly wiped out by that boss, so the game added the free shield just so you won't get wiped out by it.

The last boss is way too hard for a newer account. I had to bring in 2 healers because I was getting destroyed. The worst part is the goddamn 20 minutes of dialog AFTER the fight.
