This is my first portable emulation device, and it's awesome! A little hard on my big hands and poor eyes, but I love it. Replacing the included card with a good branded one is a must. Great community on reddit also. For me, it has survived the novelty effect, and has not landed on some dark corner of some random drawer. I play almost every day. Mostly MD/Genesis games, SCUMMVM and also visiting for the first time some Nintendo games, as I was a Sega kid in the 90's. Please follow up with some re-re-review in the future, like after 1 year of use.

Miyoo mini is great, bought one for my bros birthday, and preinstalled onion and tested it out before giving it to him, was thinking about getting one for myself as its SO portable - but its doubled in price and impossible to get now. The real benefit for me was that its cheap and replaceable if lost or broken.. its neither of those now.
Just finished Dino Crisis and Digimon World. I'm completing Final Fantasy 7 on it right now after many years of never getting past disc 1. The Miyoo Mini is great, although extremely fragile. The USB C charging port on mine snapped off, so I had to order a new port and resoldered it onto the PCB. It's working ok now, but handle it with care.
Yeah, the Miyoo Mini is my favorite pocketable device too. It’s not the BEST in any particular area, but it really hits the sweet spot in almost everything I care about in an emulation handheld: the display, the controls, the custom firmware, the themes, the game compatibility, and the size are all fantastic for on the go game sessions!
Which one would you consider the best?
@@raulmacias8682 The Steam Deck is probably the best all around if you're on a limited budget like me. If you can afford it, the upcoming GPD Win 4 looks like it will be the most capable handheld for emulation.
I was recently diagnosed with ADHD and it's funny because I also jump around a lot with different games, and I think in one of your old videos you said collecting GameBoys was your ADHD. It's so cool that there are so many people besides us who can relate.

I can't stick with one game for very long lol unless I play for a bit then save and another day maybe play a bit more
I also have ADHD so I can relate to it. It is even more harder to me because a lot of my games are on pc and I have a hard time sitting on chair for a long time.
Great to see this one still get the love it deserves considering the newer devices that have flooded the market. For a quick gaming session of 8-16 bit systems I find myself grabbing a Mini over my other devices and so glad I grabbed multiples as stock is limited.
I might pick up a second one myself!

The beauty of the Miyoo is very simple. For $60-80 you get ALL 8-16bit systems at VERY high performance and compatibility with options to run a few higher end systems, in a VERY portable form factor, with great build quality (not flawless but meets/beats price point), with EXCELLENT community support. Miyoo makes retro pocketable and enjoyable. Another great thing about the Miyoo is the buttons match 1 to 1 MOST of the systems you would play on here. This is a near perfect gameboy/GBC/GBA emulation platform. I use mine mostly for Tetris, old RPGs like Zelda, and occasionally some mario. I would say the big downside for me on this device? It's not comfortable to play more then about 1hr. I don't really blame the device because making a device ultra portable often results in poor ergonomics especially for larger hands. Are the ergonomics a deal breaker? DEFINATLY NOT. It's an excellent pick up and play device especially for it's intended use case. This is a great glove compartment OR backpack device (assuming it doesn't get too hot). Charge it, stick it in a pocket, then pull it out and use it, save or sleep and put it away.
But it's always sold out and you have to pay over $100 if u want it from another shop. With that it's probably more worth it to spend that on another device.
@@Beskar181 the RG35xx is a good alternative and it just came out for about $50. Another cheaper option is the powekiddy v90.

Totally agree with you Izzy. The 351V is my favorite Anbernic device for the full form factor. The Miyoo Mini is the best value for power and portability with tons of accessories available. I use a form fitting full case that keeps the same profile as the mini to be able to just put it in my pocket and not worry about scratches.

Yes indeed! I'd say the Miyoo Mini is still worth it. I still have mine and it's an awesome little micro handheld. I've kept the 1st custom firmware version of Onion on mine because I love it's theme so much.
Another little feature I have always admired about the Miyoo Mini is it's battery compartment door. This will allow you to safely change the lithium battery if needed. Most retro handhelds lack this feature.
My most favorite handheld at the moment is my Anbernic RG353P but my Miyoo Mini comes in around 2nd place as a favorite of mine. I also like my RG300X, Pure Black Max 2, Powkiddy X17, Powkiddy A66, Wood Grain RG351V and Black V90. Those 8 are all my top favorites at the moment. I plan to get a Steam Deck for classic PC games in the near future and it will most likely be my last handheld.

@@amristar736 I hate using my phone for gaming. Though, I understand many people prefer to use their phones. I'd say if using a phone to play your games is your thing then more power to you!
have you tried the powkiddy v90? does it compare at all?
@@KnowThyWeakness The V90 is a great handheld as well and I still have my Black Edition V90. Though, the Miyoo Mini is much more powerful than the V90 and can emulate much more than the V90. The V90 is the one that shares the battery compartment door feature with the V90. The V90 also shares the same button layout and 3 inch screen size with the Miyoo Mini. The Miyoo Mini normally costs $20 more than the V90 and has 1 speaker while the V90 has 2 speakers.
While I like both of these handhelds and I think they are both worth it. The Miyoo Mini is the better handheld in comparison.
@@jonathonearl482 hmmm I was almost tempted to put in order for the miyoo. I have a v90 and I like the clamshell design but it is basic powered. I wonder how much I would like the form factor of the miyoo. Never held one before but since you have both. What are your thoughts on experience of bringing it with you?
Out of all the devices I’ve seen this tempts me the most.
It is surprising that how one of the cheapest handhelds out there could outdid most of retro game consoles with it's ease of use, it makes my life so much easier playing pokemon is an absolute joy (spamming the fast-forward button of course lol)

I love mine. I use MiniUI on mine. I just prefer the simplicity of that OS compared to Onion. It has all the main features I want so no problem there.
I wanted to get a 2nd Miyoo Mini but they've basically disappeared online. Which is frustrating. Hopefully a temporary stock shortage.
Btw there is a bit of software to have a custom boot image.
curious do you still use miniui? i love onionos and i find it fairly simple to use especially once you get settings you like. it’s really easy to navigate and switch between games, besides simplicity is there any other reason you use miniui?

I would recommend putting some silicone grease in between the buttons and the d-pad so that it's smoother and so that the plastic does not scrape against the buttons causing that white powder in between
came for the cute form factor, stayed for onionos and its fantastic out of box experience - i want it on more handhelds!
@Izzy Nobre - For the cleaning of gunk issue, try Cyber Clean Home & Office (It's a bright yellow gooey compound with germ eliminating properties). I usually get a thin microfiber cloth and soak it in soapy water to remove gunk, but usually I just clean the cloth totally then leave it damp and wipe out the grime and anything that won't budge or is stuck I use the Cyber Clean, clean the fiber cloth with soap, then rinse with water and have a second go. Your device will end up looking brand new.

Great review! I did have one question though, maybe you could clear it up for me. Does the Miyoo Mini retain a lot of the same design elements that I'd find on the DMG ?

Just wish it has an analog. At least just one so some ps1 games can work. But i understand why it doesnt since its got a small form factor
Maybe the cutout for the dpad has slightly sharp edges and it's wearing down the plastic?
If that's the case you could fix it by taking it apart and lightly sanding it with the highest grit sandpaper you can find.

I've decided to grab this one too for the same reasons as yours! The size and software with onion OS looks to be just perfect! The main advantage of the Funkey S is that autosave/autoload feature when you close and open it, but it's just too small and after a few longer sessions I can feel the eyestrain hitting hard! And the shoulder buttons are unusable IMO... despite that, it's a really fun device! Those RG ones I feel like aren't pocketable enough and the Miyoo Mini looks like is right in between those on the perfect spot!
The Miyoo Mini and the RG300X are my favorite retro handhelds.

Needs bluetooth. The shutdown problem needs to be fixed in the future. Ideally a better battery solution for something easily swappable. Otherwise great device.

I also feel the need to constantly change games, I get easily bored. Not just games, really anything, sometimes I'm doing multiple things at the same time because just one is not enough idk... enjoyment? It's hard to explain. However, clinicals refuse to diagnose me with ADHD because I "have my life together" (allegedly) or they'll straight up say I'm just lazy if I tell them about all the projects I've wanted to make, started and then never continued

I should have bought that Miyoo Mini. It seems none are available now. Well, hesitation is again my greatest foe.
If it's just grime try some IPA (isopropyl alcohol) and a qtip to clean it. If the plastic is peeling Ive got nothing.
I love mine. Upgraded the back buttons and got some better abxy buttons.
I played mother 3, zelda minish cap, and ff3 on the miyoo. I found it hard to play gba metroids because the trigger buttons don't seem to be made for action.
I want to love the device and get the appeal, but I always reach for the rp2+. I get this is more portable but still big enough to notice in the pocket. I may get the trimui A66 for a true unnoticeable pocket device.

Do you find yourself missing PSP games at all? This is one thing that stops me from picking one of these up.
I have a steam deck, odin pro, phone, gaming laptop, a modded switch, 8 VITAs, and an OG PSP for playing those games. The Miyoo mini isn’t for 16:9 games

My problem with all these portable emulators is that I already own a portable emulator that I didn't buy intentionally for that purpose. It's a device that I already owned because I use it for a lot of stuff like idk making calls, checking social media and send messages, watch videos on youtube. It's a neat little device called a smartphone, it fits on my pocket and i can emulate anything relevant on it with excellent performance, no need for configuration or anything. That's why I'll probably never buy one of these portable emulators unless they really deliver features that are truly incredible and their price also becomes more attractive.
Everyone has a smartphone capable of at least PS1 emulation nowadays.
There are good reasons to have a nice little device purely for emulation:
1) Saves the phone battery. Dead gaming device does not leave you incommunicable.
2) Phone screens are NOT an ideal interface for game input controls, as they lack tactile feedback like real buttons.
3) Quick game sessions without the hassle of notifications are more immersive.
Sure, a smartphone can solve all your problems, but there's a market there for people who don't like to use them for games.
That's what I thought the 1st time. I also have a good phone that can emulate more than devices like this can because it's more powerful but after buying my first one (Anbernic 351P). It's just more convenient. Playing on touch screen is just difficult for precise control and movement. I also became lazy just connecting to bluetooth controller with my phone or even wired controller when I got an emulation handheld. I just pick up my emulation handheld and I'm good to go.
If you're just paying RPGs like just choosing menus/attacks you can get away with the touch screen on the phone.

I have miyoo mini v2 & the 280v. I like how the 280v feels in my hands better, but miyoo performs better with more games.
I still haven't gotten my hands on a 280v. Gotta fix that.
