What is stopping someone removing the ram mount It’s been awhile since I’ve used a ram mount cause I just use the maps on my iPhone. I do like the idea
This setup still needs the locking 1in ball arms to extra guard the XT. The hip issues I've experienced are caused by not riding for a while or overriding one position too long. The tendons and muscles around the hip get picky at certain angels I position my legs. Walking backwards and yoga stretches help Medigate the hip issues. Hope this helps anyone affected.
For those commenting on ball mount, Ram Mount makes a special designed lock for the ball mounts. I have one on my GPS ball mount. I also have the MOTOPUMPS GPS lock for my XT2. Works great.
Ram makes an attachment that replaces the tighten arm, unlocks with a custom cover/lock, similar to a wheel lock on your car. I have used it for years to secure my radar detector and GPS mount. HOWEVER, I still take my RD / Garmin XT off EVERYTIME I walk away from the bike. I don't want my mounts stolen either.......
I use the Kradellock XT by Robert Becker Design. Uses a barrel type key for locking in place. I also use the RAM pin-lock for the mount to make it a bit harder to just unscrew the knob and take the whole thing. Don't get me wrong: a determined thief can take anything, but with those two installed, I'm OK with leaving it on the bike for food and bathroom breaks.
I think the Garmin approach, to make it east to remove and replace the XT, is the correct one. Once you lock the mount to the ball mount, someone can just unscrew the ball mount. If you lock the ball mounts, it's just a few screws to remove it from the handlebar. Just take it off if you're not around!
Great idea, poor execution, I feel. I wouldn't leave my very expensive Garmin Zumo mounted in that way, as it wouldn't really do a thing to stop the GPS being stolen. You have the Zumo mounted on a RAM ball system. What is going to stop a thief with a knife or a pair of pliers just snipping the wire and undoing the RAM mount quickly?. Keep up the great reviews, easily the best Goldwing vids on RUclips.
Why add clutter? Why have to buy something else? Simply unclip it and put into your jacket pocket. I often see deadbeat punks loitering at gas stations just waiting to rip off anything they can grab to sell for their next fix.
I have been using a 3" screw with a Hex head , so it takes a hex key to remove it. Screws right between the release and the mount. The screw costs about $0.40.
Can't tell for sure, but it looks like there is a know to loosen the mount from the RAM ball - if so couldn't one just loosen that and make off with the GPS???
needlenose pliers on the silver rod will open that pin in seconds, and what about other bikers that might have the key also (I bet they're all the same) will have access . I imagine its of if you are just quickly going in to pay for gas , but I wouldn't rely on this for anything else
Reminds me of putting a security lock on a car with no windows. While you’re worrying around about the little button that no one can see, you forget about the giant 10 foot wing nut that 3/4 of a turn and the entire gps falls out. For me, I don’t have a problem with just hitting a button and putting the gps in the glove box. Besides, I’d rather put the gps up when I park anyway to avoid any heat (Texas summers, you know) damage. That’s probably why GARMIN never addressed the issue too???
I like this product a lot. Perfect for someone who doesn't mind leaving their Garmin mounted all the time but my Garmin is wired to a hot wire so I'd have to use that screw to unmount my Garmin every time I park in my garage to prevent draining of my battery.
This look like a good gear, but for me the Touratech Lockable Handlebar Mount for Zumo XT, are better and more safe... I anderstand the Touratech is more expensive... but the zumo are expensive to.
Watching your video I see there’s an elephant in the room a.k.a. wing bolt holding your Ram mout tight , FYI ram makes a locking bolt secure the Ram mount prevent possible theft
If I wanted your GPS, why wouldn't I simply unscrew the Garmin ball mount and take it? I might have to snip the wires, but what the heck! The little gadget you're reviewing wouldn't prevent that as far as I can see, as Jon" below mentioned.
I bought one last week, works great. But all someone has to do is unlock the ram mount cut the wire and bam.... There goes your 500 dollar GPS. But I'll keep my fingers cross on that. It's great for a smash and grab deterrent.
The website indicates "from $15.00"... until you choose the lock "option", which is $69.99. I was planning to buy 2 until I seen that. Probably worth it, but too much for an impulse buy.
Even with the lock on, couldn't a thief just unscrew the ram mount butterfly ball adaptor and walk off? I would just rather take off and put in my case.
Garmin is a strange company. It seems like one group doesn't know what's the other is doing. It was done by Garmin on Garmin Montana mount from day one. Could they just replicate this for the XT mount?? Same with the navigating software. The "nearest entry point" getting back on your route not from the start was so easy on Nuvi 1450 and 1490 in 2012, yet is a problem on the XT and forget about (you have to be too creative) on 396...
As far as I can tell the "key" used for this locking mount seems to be nothing special. So, if someone has the same "key" it would be very simple to steel the Garmin Zumo. I don't trust it at all! Far better locking devices are available.
What keep someone from just unscrewing the ball mount?
That's all well but what's up with undoing the ball socket
What is stopping someone removing the ram mount
It’s been awhile since I’ve used a ram mount cause I just use the maps on my iPhone.
I do like the idea
Nothing. They could steal the bike too. It’s just a deterrent.

What stops someone from loosening the ball mount and cut the power cable?
I bought the TOURATECH LOCKING GPS MOUNT FOR GARMIN ZUMO XT. Stupid expensive $199.95 but I can walk away and not worry.
Yep...the TOURATECH LOCKING GPS MOUNT is the only locking mechanism I would trust!
Great idea, poor execution, I feel. I wouldn't leave my very expensive Garmin Zumo mounted in that way, as it wouldn't really do a thing to stop the GPS being stolen. Exactly! Garmin made it easy to remove and install so that you can take it with you in a pocket or in the helmet or in the trunk or side case.
Well, this is only if you need to jump into a convenience store at a gas station for a min or two, not for leaving it unattended for a long time.
You can get a pin lock for the RAM mount. Replaces the bolt and makes it a little harder to steal the mount. Better than the standard knob.
I agree, this is useless :( better remove the garmin from there :)
Why add clutter? Why have to buy something else? Simply unclip it and put into your jacket pocket. I often see deadbeat punks loitering at gas stations just waiting to rip off anything they can grab to sell for their next fix.

I went the Touratech locking mount, no tiny tool to deal with.
Great video. NOW I get it. Thank you! 👍😎

Thanks! I think that this is a good idea. I’m going to buy it

Damn, I was just looking at this. I'm thinking about getting it. Mine is not mounted on a RAM mount so it should be pretty secure.
I like this product a lot. Perfect for someone who doesn't mind leaving their Garmin mounted all the time but my Garmin is wired to a hot wire so I'd have to use that screw to unmount my Garmin every time I park in my garage to prevent draining of my battery.
You can leave it there and shut the Zumo with the on/off button n the back.
Wow, how much was that $2 worth of materials!? 😮
I suppose some folks will buy. For me, seems to be a solution to a problem that doesn’t exist.
This look like a good gear, but for me the Touratech Lockable Handlebar Mount for Zumo XT, are better and more safe... I anderstand the Touratech is more expensive... but the zumo are expensive to.
Personally I would remove every time . Nothing stopping anyone from coming along, unscrewing your ram arm and just snipping the wire to your sat nav .
I got it. Easy-pezy! Nice little product!
Watching your video I see there’s an elephant in the room a.k.a. wing bolt holding your Ram mout tight , FYI ram makes a locking bolt secure the Ram mount prevent possible theft
Yes, but they would have to cut the wire to steal the unit. This is just makes it a little harder to steal.
The key gives access to any "secured" GPS device.
Love mine. Still take it the motel room at night. Security and charging.
I have one on my gs adventure. Works great and simple. Not bulky.
What about the Ram connection 🤔
If I wanted your GPS, why wouldn't I simply unscrew the Garmin ball mount and take it? I might have to snip the wires, but what the heck! The little gadget you're reviewing wouldn't prevent that as far as I can see, as Jon" below mentioned.
Great video
I'd dare say it would be easy to remove
With a set of needle nosed pliers 🤔
will it work with zumo 595lm mount?
I bought one last week, works great. But all someone has to do is unlock the ram mount cut the wire and bam.... There goes your 500 dollar GPS. But I'll keep my fingers cross on that. It's great for a smash and grab deterrent.
Exactly. This item in the vid is a waste of money.
What stops someone from taking the entire Ram mount?
Just unscrew the ram ball extention.. Cut cord... It's gone... Remove n put in trunk.
All you have to do is unscrew the ball mount and away you go with the whole thing, after cutting the wire.
The website indicates "from $15.00"... until you choose the lock "option", which is $69.99. I was planning to buy 2 until I seen that. Probably worth it, but too much for an impulse buy.
yeah for $70 I'll just pop the Zumo off and pop it in my pocket when I'm out of site of the bike.
Even with the lock on, couldn't a thief just unscrew the ram mount butterfly ball adaptor and walk off? I would just rather take off and put in my case.
Good idea but. . . any thief could just unscrew the ram mount.
Couldn't they just unscrew the ram mount and take the whole thing???
Yeah for $70 I’ll pop it off and lock in the saddlebag. Great design though, but that’s a couple of tanks of gas.
Garmin is a strange company. It seems like one group doesn't know what's the other is doing. It was done by Garmin on Garmin Montana mount from day one. Could they just replicate this for the XT mount??

Will the lock work on a 395 mount?
I don't think the 395 mount works the same way, but you might email MotoPumps just to make sure.
The whole thing makes no sense at all as long as you use it with the original RAM attachment.
Hey there's a whole lot of money to be made here, develop a lock for that wing nut so someone cannot steal it mount and all.
RAM makes one
@@cruisemansgarage do you have a link for this?
@@cruisemansgarage never mind I found it. Thanks
PRICEY at $69.99....
As far as I can tell the "key" used for this locking mount seems to be nothing special. So, if someone has the same "key" it would be very simple to steel the Garmin Zumo.
I don't trust it at all!
Far better locking devices are available.
Just undo the Ram ball mount and the Garmin is gone.
If I’m a thief I’ll just unscrew your ram ball and walk away.
just loosen up the ball mount and take it off 🤨
I put my helmet on and off. I put my Garmin on and off. Simple I feel better.
Garmin doesn't make this because they are in the business of SELLING gps's.
