I adore Kate. Each song is so carefully crafted from the lyrics to the lead and backing vocals to the instrumentation and production. It all builds with each other to bring the listener into that world. Each listen uncovers more and more. Kate is magic. Not everyone gets her, but those who do are hooked. After listening to a song, read the lyrics and any backstory you can find and listen to it 10 more times. There is a on line Kate Bush Encyclopedia that contains a lot of information about her songs. With her third album, at age 22, she took on co-producer role. From her fourth album on she was the sole producer. Brave, fierce and a true one off artist, Kate is everything and more
One of the all-time great albums, I love it so much. I must have heard it a hundred times and I never get tired of listening. Beautiful and moving. I think Kate Bush is one of the few artists that deserves to be called a genius.
Kate is the most original female musical artist in the past 50 years. I saw her in concert in 1979. Hounds of Love is her peak creative moment but she always produced the most amazing music.
So wonderful for you to listen to Kate Bush. I first heard her when I moved to Los Angeles in the early 80s. I really liked the song "Sat In Your Lap" and "Babushka". "Hounds of Love" was the last new release LP I bought as after that I bought CDs only new releases. Thanks for the reminder of that time of putting this album on my turntable and listening to it with headphones on. Nice reaction.
Can't count the number of times I've listened to this LP. "take my shoes off/and throw them in the lake/and I'll be two steps on the water," man, that has always stuck with me. This album was pretty immense on release, and, coming out in the mid-eighties, came at pretty much peak video time. And Kate's videos have always been...unique. She really is one of those artists who are absolutely themselves and unlike anyone else. Artists like Bowie, Peter Gabriel, Ren have the same energy--purely themselves, purely about what they hear/see in their heads.
That is one of the best albums ever made by one of the greatest artists ever. She influenced so many women in music from PJ Harvey to Björk, Tori Amos, and Adele but also Metallica, Massive Attack, Johnny Rotten of the Sex Pistols, or Peter Gabriel with whom she worked together with on Don't Give Up were fans of her. Wait til you come to the long suite of the Side 2. That is a masterpiece like Echoes, 2112, or Misplaced Childhood - but much more diverse in styles. Kate Bush was discovered by David Gilmour in her teens. She was 20 when she already had 2 albums out and planned her only tour (later named Tour of Life) for which she co-choreographed all the dance scenes and theatralics, disigned the costumes, wrote and sang all the songs, and most importantly co-invened the wireless mic for the show as she couldn't dance with a mic in hand. The only artists that come close to her talent and innovative mind were probably The Beatles and David Bowie.
I really enjoy watching your channel and I am so glad that you have finally got round to reacting to this album - one of the greatest albums to come out of the 1980s, from one of the greatest ever female music artists. Kate did it all - singer, songwriter, vocal innovator, composer, pianist, music revolutionary, producer, dancer, mime, choreographer, video director and visionary. The list of music artists (male and female) across many genres who cite her as a major influence is immense.
Bravo! God, how I love me some Kate! What an amazing PRODUCER she is! I know everyone will want you to start at her first album as you dive into this hole. But I’m hoping that you choose her “Sensual World” album next! Great reaction! God Bless The Fairlight CMI!
What a great album by a great singer / songwriter / choreographer. I had never heard anything quite like Kate before, and I immediately fell in love with her style. But Kate is a true performer. Without the videos to go with the songs, we're only getting half of Kate.
I believe the synth was a Fairlight CMI, the drum machine was a LinnDrum LM-2 with additional percussion provided by Stuart Elliott, and the reverb unit was a Quantec.
Such a great album. Kate is known for her unique style. No one else sounds like her. She mixes a great variety of styles: Rock, progressive, experimental, world music, Irish influences, music hall, even a bit of hard rock in a few songs. She is also a very visual artist. Most of her (very few) concerts were heavily centered around her dance and choreography, so much so that the cordless mic (the one you put on your head to be able to sing) was invented so she could do her concerts while dancing in the late 70's. Her first few albums up to this one (Hounds of Love) are absolutely unique and should all be listened in full. Her debut, The Kick inside (That has Wuthering Heights) is simply excellent. Her third album Never for Ever (the one with Babooshka) is very experimental and full of classics like the aformentioned Babooshka, The Wedding List, Violin, The Infant Kiss or Breathing. The following album, The Dreaming is by far her most experimental. Not the first album someone new to Kate Bush might like. I mean it's weird, even for her, but such a great album. Along with Never for Ever it's my favorite. Hounds of Love is her most successful album and the one that made her a big star in the US. The first side you've just listened to is among her more mainstream and accessible music (still great obviously). Side two, called The Ninth Wave on vinyl, is a sort of concept suite about a woman drowning, remembering her life before being rescued and coming back to life and society. This side has some pretty experimental tracks (can't wait to see your face listening to Waking the Witch). Her 2005 double album Aerial is also fantastic, especially disc 2. Once you start the Kate Bush rabbit hole you just can't come out. She's such a unique artist.
Nice to see you smiling from ear to ear while listening to this magical album. Kate has four music videos to the songs on side one. Check them out when you have time.
I have been a huge fan of Kate Bush's since I stumbled across Wuthering Heights when that album The Kick Inside came out. I have loved her ever since. She is an amazing singer and artist..
I remember when Running Up That Hill came out and went into rotation on the radio stations. At the time I didn’t really care for the song or the album. About 8 years ago I got back into music and set myself up with a good 2 channel stereo system. Soon after I was reading through a few audio sites and found that she had a massive fan base and many people highly recommended I get a copy of this album. Well now I have her entire discography. Once you get it, you get it.
What a great reaction to Kate's iconic "Hounds Of Love" album, which was her 5th studio album and the 2nd one, which she produced herself (the 1st tims was her previous album "The Dreaming" and previous to that Kate was credited as a co-producer on "Never For Ever" - although now people who were there say that she was the one in charge on "Never For Ever"). As many have mentioned, the second side titled "The Ninth Wave," is a magnificent concept piece, which was a brave decision since af the time concept albums had fallen a bit out of fashion. However, the decision to have "The Ninth Wave" as side 2 is so Kate, since she has been fearless in the choices she has made in her music, covering subjects that no other artists (at the time), would ever include in a song. I do consider "Hounds Of Love" to be an album, which represents the perfect mixture of the commercial and the experimental. I absolutely recommend that you do a deep dive into Kate's musical catalogue, which is of extremely high quality, and I'm sure that you will have an enjoyable experience. Myself, I became a Kate Bush fan at the very beginning. When I saw the white dress (version 1) music video for "Wuthering Heights," I was hooked, and there was no turning back. BTW, Kate's music videos are also a very worthwhile watch, Kate did get involved in production, and she also directed a few of them as well. I hope that you have a fantastic time listening to more Kate Bush, and if you have questions I'm sure that I or other Kate Bush fans will be more than willing to assist you.
Nice take on Kate B's Hounds of Love album Verdy! I started with her album, Never Forever, which I loved. I've been hooked on her work ever since. Great channel. Thanks for the videos Verdy. Keep 'em coming :)
This album was Kate's white album. She was at the zenith of her musical creativity. The orchestral arrangements was done by the late Michael Kamen who himself was an outstanding composer.
Great reaction! Side two is conceptual suite of songs titled “The Ninth Wave”, meant to be heard as a single piece of music. It’s about a girl washed overboard into the ocean and left behind. The songs are incredible, focusing on her struggle to stay alive and her hallucinations doing so. There is a disagreement between listeners as to if she dies during morning fog and is reborn, or if she just survives. I think she dies and is reborn, it fits the musical narrative better. It’s Kate’s masterpiece!
Good as the first side of the album is (you have to think of it as a vinyl record with two sides) the second side sub-titled The Ninth Wave will blow your mind. As you are listening to it keep in mind that the 7-track concept suite is telling the story of a woman adrift in the sea with just a life jacket to keep her afloat while she waits and prays for rescue.
BTW you should also watch her videos, they are a piece of art. Especially Cloudbusting where she plays Donald Sutherland's (one of my all time fav actor) daughter.
Discovered Kate Bush in my 20’s. Never looked back. Worth checking out the Cloudbusting official video featuring Montreal’s own Donald Sutherland. (Quite famous movie star back in the day)
Another long time Kate fan here. The last song on side 1 (Cloudbusting) was inspired by a book by Peter Reich. His father was a scientist in the 50s and did experiments on his compound called Organon in Rangeley Maine. Evidently the government shut him down and arrested him. Some day you should check out Kate's video with Donald Sutherland. Kate plays Peter in the video. I read the book, A Book Of Dreams, by Peter shortly after Hounds of Love came out and I found out the back story of Cloudbusting. I live in northern Massachusetts the grandson of French Canadian immigrants. And always loved that what this song is about something that took place only a few hours north of where I live. Looking on a map I can see it's almost exactly half way between here and Quebec. So you live as close. Sorry for the long reply but this is a favorite topic of mine. I hope you love side 2 as I do. It a concept suite like Dark Side Of The Moon.
I'm so glad that David Gilmour of Pink Floyd spotted her talent earlier and became a major supporter, patron and encourager in the early days even before her first record deal. In turn KB was a big Floyd fan!
Just as you did with Led Zeppelin, Kate Bush's music deserves a listen from the beginning. There's a great deal of interesting and beautiful music to be experienced. Even if you can't post reactions, you ought to give yourself the opportunity to enjoy it all.
You MUST listen to The Dreaming - entirely! I believe she was only 17. She's a genius. BTW - She's a big favorite of Bjork and many other great female artists after her. That "synth" is called a "Fairlight." And it's a sampler. When it came out, the cost was around 100k. It was one of the most advanced samplers of the day. Glad you found her. :)
The Dreaming was released in september of 1982, Kate was 24 at that time. But even for someone at that age, this album being her first fully selfproduced one, it was out of this world.
Great reaction to a great artist! Kate Bush is an artist’s artist but you might not realize it from this album. This album was a big production… her earlier stuff had more odd but wonderful songs, like Babooshka. Never Forever was my entry point for Kate and I’d love to see you react to that album!
Hi! Love your music reactions - it's great to see someone younger appreciate good music! 👍 If you happen to like 90's dance music, it's worth checking out Utah Saints 'Something Good' - they re-work Cloudbusting and use a lot of samples and was a banger back in the day! 😊
Great album from her. I personally like The Dreaming the best but this album is much more accessible, especially side one with the suite on side 2 being more experimental. Among the real strings on this album a lot of sounds were made with the Fairlight CMI keyboard workstation. She had her home studio so she worked up a lot of the basic tracks for the album over a couple years.
Thank Gen Xer Winona Ryder for bringing her music to a new generation because it was Winona pushing for it to be included on Stranger Things. See , Gen X doesn't forget and knows a thing or two about music. We were immersed in music from very young
Well, unfortunately this mix was chosen over the original for all releases (remasters) of this album from 2011 and onward. You can't hardly find the original release anymore. The same goes for The Red Shoes. On that one they (or Kate herself?) destroyed Big Stripey Lie by fading out the original ending.
Mother Stands for Comfort is such an interesting song. On the surface it seems like it would be a sweet song, however when you realize the child is likely a psychopath the soundscape and lack of emotions in the vocals all make sense
Lovely reaction. I beg you - although it may be too late - to listen to the songs of 'The Ninth Wave' on side 2 as an entire piece rather than to stop between them.
This album is also a great example of CMI Fairlight sampling synthesizer entering the music industry. Kate Bush was one of the first ones who owned this amazing machine. And she became pretty good one to program and play it. There's many pictures of her sitting beside this synth... en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fairlight_CMI
I adore Kate. Each song is so carefully crafted from the lyrics to the lead and backing vocals to the instrumentation and production. First song, all I see is Max getting out of the upsidedown and all of us routing for her, "Come on Max COME ON run" lol
Bought this album the day it came out. Played it four times that day.
Mind blown... I've had this album since the day it came out, and only today did I realize that those are dogs in the cover photo!
Cloudbusting is one of my favs :D
Then Side 2 happens and Kate goes to a level few if any have ever reached before, since or after!
Freddie Mercury yo!

Fabulous pop/rock album.
You keep finding my favorites. :) Keep up the good work
In case you wondered, the line 'its in the trees, its coming!' is from a 1958 horror movie, Night of the Demon.
I'm so glad that David Gilmour of Pink Floyd spotted her talent earlier and became a major supporter, patron and encourager in the early days even before her first record deal. In turn KB was a big Floyd fan!
My favorite album by anyone
Just as you did with Led Zeppelin, Kate Bush's music deserves a listen from the beginning. There's a great deal of interesting and beautiful music to be experienced. Even if you can't post reactions, you ought to give yourself the opportunity to enjoy it all.
Great reaction. Side two is very different and you'll love it :)
Thank you, Verdy❗☮👍
By the way, "Don't Give Up" is a beautiful duet ballad by Peter Gabriel and her💔.
Kate Bush is amazing!

I was lucky enough to get tickets for the Before the Dawn concert. A....mazing!
Kate is brilliant and beautiful.
Thank you as always Verdy for another great video and for being so beautiful and gorgeous
LOVE Kate Bush !!!!
Great reaction to a great artist! Kate Bush is an artist’s artist but you might not realize it from this album. This album was a big production… her earlier stuff had more odd but wonderful songs, like Babooshka. Never Forever was my entry point for Kate and I’d love to see you react to that album!
I love watching people discovering KB...
Make sure you do side two. It's every bit as good but in an entirely different way. She really is a genus. Thanks for the reaction.
Never heard of the album but I support YOU!
Kate produced this album herself

Whoa, I dig the beginning build on this mix of Big Sky, compared to the version I'm familiar with.

The whole story - greatest hits album. Check that out next! ❤😊
The bass on Mother Stands For Comfort… I need a napkin to wipe my mouth.
The clapping you did during The Big Sky? Kate did pretty the same thing during the video for the song.
Mother Stands for Comfort is such an interesting song. On the surface it seems like it would be a sweet song, however when you realize the child is likely a psychopath the soundscape and lack of emotions in the vocals all make sense
You should read Wuthering Heights. It's really good.🌹
COOL VIDEO😎😎
Lovely 🎉
Just wait until you get to side 2!
Congrats on the new teeth!
_"I'm gonna mispronounce maybe, but... 'Wuddering 'Ites'? I tink dats how it's pronounced"_ - It is when you say it, Verdy! Good enough!
Lovely reaction. I beg you - although it may be too late - to listen to the songs of 'The Ninth Wave' on side 2 as an entire piece rather than to stop between them.
Deja vu? O.O
have you watched Arcane?
