I love how they never miss a chance to show how modest Columbo is. Even when they held the door open for him he simply assumed it was being held for Superintendent Dirk, rather than himself, the honored guest. He never assumes he's the most important person in the room even when it's absolutely the case.
Thanks for publishing this. Although I have the complete box set, it is so convenient. This episode has been one of my favorites. I visited that airport and several European countries in 1991 for 11 days of "computer" business, and 6 days of vacation. The episode brings back some fond memories, and also of the late Mr. Falk's unique style. Were you aware that he played a detective in a high school play? BTW, he reminds me a bit of my late uncle John, same name as mine, who was a Lieutenant detective for the Massachusetts State Police, and lived in a house with a nearly identical footprint as mine. Some folks tried to have it taken away, and possibly nullify a will, and even possibly switch an award, it's hard to tell from gossip and other sources, exactly what some folks' intentions are, but it is somewhat irrelevant, and, I am here in my home, and hang in most of the time, put a bunch or projects on hold for now, and enjoy an occasional short bit of "Columbo" on RUclips. I have enjoyed many of these short clips recently that you have posted... Thanks again, _John_
@@artmallory970 yes I agree I really like it when that nun was trying to get him a new coat 👍😆 I think I have seen all the the shows and continue to watch them.I Love it ❤️😃
And Peter Falk too - I've seen several interviews with him where all he could do was to give credit to his writers, directors, and crew for producing such a great show, and thank his audience for enjoying their work so much that they wanted to see more. He was truly a class act
What a legend is Peter falk alias lieutenant columbo you could not imagine anyone being better at playing that role than he..a terrific detective that you could not help but be fascinated by his acting making you really believe he was a real detective. 😁👍
If I remember correctly in all the Columbo episodes he only investigates a murder in two of them both at the request of the police of that country. This one and the one in Mexico. He also investigates murder on a cruise ship on the high seas so technically that could be considered out of the country as well. He made a friend in the Scotland Yard inspector that day because he references him in one of the 1990's reboots.
When Columbo came to my country! Unfortunately, it wasn't one of the best episodes. When American TV shows make UK based episodes, they're always chocolate box, cosy versions of say, London. They always lose something. I'm pleased the great man got to have some fish & chips, though.
It was even more so back in the 70’s when this aired, greater emphasis on entertainment. It’s not one of my favorite episodes, but it was fun to watch Honor Blackman and Richard Basehart as such a narcissistic, dysfunctional (dangerous) duo! They had some laugh-out-loud funny moments. And Wilfrid Hyde-White is always a joy to watch.
COLUMBO: Just one more thing, sir...I couldn't help but notice that you have some leftover fried kidney in your ice box. JACK THE RIPPER: Yes, lieutenant, I occasionally like to dine on badger kidneys; they're a delicacy with regard to my family. C: Yes, sir, but the kidney this piece came from is too large to be badger. This is more along the lines of a pig or...human. JR: Are you insinuating that I'm a cannibal, lieutenant? C: Oh, no sir! Not at all! It just seems to me that Scotland Yard receiving a human kidney with a note from the killer saying how he fried and ate the other one...well sir, you also having the remains of a large fried kidney in your possession...you must admit it's a remarkably coincidence. JR: Well, if you take a closer look at the dish, my good sir, then you'll find that it's of two badger kidneys that were fused together when fried. The resulting preparation and consumption have made the two pieces appear as one. C: [smiles] Yes, that must be it. Well, sir, I won't take up anymore of your time. Have a good day, sir. C: [leaves] JR: [glares at door]
This may not have been a great episode. But I really love the chemistry between Peter Falk and Bernard Fox. To find actors. And of course as we all know Fox would appear in another Colombo episode
I know he didn't mean it but bringing up Jack The Ripper as a compliment to Scotland Yard is pretty strange. Surely Columbo knows they never caught the guy?
Another point that the wife is real. He uses his relatives to get the suspects guard down, but there's no point in mentioning his wife to a fellow colleague, if she were not real
Some cuts look like the onlookers are staring at him before quick cutaways to 'extras' with nothing in the background next to him. I think they genuinely turned up and filmed this on the spot with some extras standing around him but you can see the surprised onlookers, too.
That Rover TC was gorgeous! But those white wall tyres on the Jag at the end looked terrible! I'm thinking they look different to an American audience. No one with a Jag in the UK would be seen dead with whitewall tyres! 😱
What a joke, if you was going to make a scene about heathrow airport at least they could have made it realistic not this joke. This looked like it was a set made and filmed in someones garage. Of all the Columbo episodes this has to be the worst ever.
This is genuinely terrible acting, set, script, directing. Must be the worst Columbo scene ever! So bad it's funny. I always thought Columbo had good production values...

One of Columbo's best traits is his modesty. He has never taken advantage of his title as a lieutenant

Nice to hear the cockney accent. Lieutenant Frank Columbo : an American in London.
The '70s where you took a picture and you had to wait a week or two to see if it came out right. And also you had maybe 12 pictures in a roll of film

Same thing with his bumbling around to get suspects to let down their guard.
Notice how he puts the camera to his left eye? I wonder if he was acting as a tourist or really taken in by the changing of the guard.
What does Columbo's behavior with regard to the changing of the guard have to do with the camera going to his left eye?
Of course he would put the camera to his left eye - Falk's right eye was glass (a fact which gets mentioned in one of the later episodes).
