Not taking up for Puff, but the same thing happens to almost every artist on every label. It's very rare that you make an album or song and you are rich forever off it.
When a artist signs a "contract" the artist should have a entertainment lawyer review before signing it. Most artist are so happy to be getting a contract that they forget about the business side of the industry. Record companies advance funds to get the record made and then recoup the funds when the album is completed (basic loan and repay deal), Look at a artist like Sir Mix a Lot career or anyone who has sign a Distribution Deal aka 80/20 deal aka Master P deal.

For those that don't know, New artist usually get the shitty deals. Also if you are an Artist who writes there own songs. Do Not give up your publishing. When you keep your publishing and some of your songs get big. You will always make money. Example: Whitney Houston song, I will always Love You was written by Dolly Parton. Dolly Parton recorded that song back in the 1970's but with Whitney Houston version Dolly made 10 million from Royalty checks. That is serious money. So if Dolly would have signed away her publishing. The record company would have made that 10 million. If you going to sign a contract read your contract with an Entertainment Lawyer cause if you just go ahead and sign your name you might be signing your life away. Also if or when record companies give an artist an advance. Believe me and you the record company is going to get there money back with interest. When your a popular artist usually you can negotiate a new contract and get a better deal. Some big artist have been known to keep there master copies. For those who know what master copies are. Normally the record company keeps the masters and have been known to sell them to bigger companies. Imagine a label selling your music and you can't do anything about it.
If your in a band it's best for the band to divide the money equally to avoid problems because if for example the guitarist writes most of the songs along with the drummer. Them two will make more money cause they wrote the songs. Bands like U2 divide all there money to make it even because they are a band but not every band does that and it causes bands to break up if one member makes more than the other.
So it's best to learn the business before you sign anything because the record companies and business can be a shady f_cking world. Diddy don't give to shits because he is worth $740. Million. Serious money. But just because you have money like that doesn't mean you should keep shitting on the ones that didn't get successful like you. It's always best to pull your brother up with you than to keep him down.
