    This video is an old gem! Very clear and concise. 2010 = no intro, no background music, less than 10 minutes, no beg for subscription, likes, notification bell reminder, no merch plug, and no social media shout outs. That being said, I could really use a hoodie, with a volt meter on it, with a silly pun attached.

    There's that quote, "If you can't explain it simply, you don't understand it well enough". This guy clearly knows his stuff well, as he can explain what takes others twenty minutes in about 5 and, most importantly, I come away having learnt even more than I set out to. Rathe than just talk around something, he has that rare ability to impart knowledge -- it's like I've received a 'knowledge transfusion', if you will.

    That is a good beginning tutorial for users of multimeters. I have an old multimeter with the harder to read display, and two newer types with the digital readings. They all work fine, but one is much better than the others and more functions and is built to resist drops better also. Thanks so much for those like myself who have forgotten much of what I learned since I don't do much of the measuring other than mainly batteries voltage.

    Hands down, one of the top two clearest and most informative videos on the purchase and basic use of a multimeter.
    For about six years I was a subscriber to a different electronics channel and for the most part got a lot of entertainment from watching it, although surprizingly very little education. However the guy's attitude towards expensive equipment finally went too far for me. I am now a 'Big Clive' subscriber and your channel also. Critically you both give basically the same advice--the best multimeter is the one you can afford to buy.
    I look forward to watching the rest of your videos.

    Just a note of caution: Multimeters have a finite amount of amps you can send through them when testing current, usually written on the front. If you exceed this you will blow a fuse and possibly brick your multimeter

    • @leecowell8165
      @leecowell8165 6 месяцев назад

  • @MattMerkle
    @MattMerkle 9 лет назад +9

    I feel the video should have mentioned the importance of getting a multimeter with fuses on the current jacks. Many (most) cheap multimeters forgo fuses for the current measurements, which may result in damage to the meter if you're not careful. And under higher loads, it could be dangerous to you (explosive or dramatic amounts of fire coming from the meter).
    Spending $20 more to get into the fused meter range is worth every cent. Don't put safety under cost.

    That "old school analogue crap", as you so eloquently describe it, is still used by professionals because it has distinct advantages over digital versions, not the least of which is when you are dealing with changing voltages or currents. Watching a digital readout continuously changing is a real pain in the proverbial, thus digital meters are better suited to steady-state measurements. It is also easier to check semiconductors such as diodes, transistors, mosfets and the like with an analogue meter. With some digital meters, you cannot check these devices at ALL. Thus, in any half-decent electronics lab, you will both types.

    Multi meters are really best for preventing your ass from getting the crap shocked out of it! When I first started replacing electric pool pump motors ,I learned the hard way! Sometimes with wet ,bare feet ,Ive been shot across a few backyards! Some of the pumps ,even after manually shutting off the time clocks,still had hot 220- V ,60 amp juice,due to the heat pump using time clock over-ride to keep the pool at desired temp,even when the time-clock had the pump off ,like at night! Got a multi meter after a few good jolts.Man just thinking about that feeling gives me the willies....

    I prefer analog display.. expecially when the result it constantly changing. Nothing beats seeing a needle moving to know exactly what is going on. Digital is good for things like DC sure, but to see a moving circuit, the moving needle lets you see what is going on in real time.. Everything has its purpose in other words. Saying that analog meters sux is stupid thing to say.

      $3 funnels and a $7 multi meter for .86 cents out the door, WOHOO!!!

    Short. Informative. Easy to comprehend. Now my fear of multimeters and electrical troubleshooting for a beginner is on a clear path. Thanks for posting!

    Brilliant, brilliant, brilliant... and one of the best videos which explain just the important facts. I hate "wafflers" who takes 20 minutes to explain a three-second fact! Thank you very much, Arfrotechmods Best of luck. :)

      @Afrotechmods  10 лет назад

      What multimeter were you using? Did you have the cables plugged in to measure volts, not amps?

    • @MrMinecraftermc
      @MrMinecraftermc 10 лет назад

      I prob had it on amps I was plugging the red wire to the different inputs, it was a cheap Home Depot multimeter anyway, but it was really odd I have never see. That happen

    • @Afrotechmods
      @Afrotechmods  10 лет назад

      Yeah the amps vs volts configuration is REALLY important please don't make that mistake again! Also beware of multimeters that seem too cheap to be true.

    Thank you for this tutorial. I've had a multimeter for a few years and never really known how to use it. I sort of guess what I need to check and poke whatever I'm checking. Guess I'm lucky I haven't blown a fuse the few times I've used it. This video is really helpful for me starting to understand what I should be doing.
