Mr. Blau's fullsome tone reverberates from a deeper place in his body. He has enviable breath support that allows long lasting resonance, even in his rapid, short notes. I am striving for that kind of potency and endurance myself. I can really appreciate his wonderful example.
Great to watch a very talented student and great teacher at work. Blau has a fantastic teaching manner - praise, and respect for the student at all times.
The microphone is the reason his tone sounds "airy." If you stand right next to a flute being played, the tone sounds different 3 feet away, as shown. he has a very nice grenadilla flute. he is a remarkable flautist.
I feel lucky to be able to witness a part of masterclass by this excellent teacher-student pair. Both very talented and musical. The tension between the two was clearly felt in the beginning, as the student was unable to meet the teacher's expectation, but it quickly softened as it went on, and by the end the student was able to impress the teacher. Wonderful stuff.
Nice example of both types of flute bodies, metal & wood, rarely heard on the same except. (obviously, wood not to be used in 'Afternoon of an faun' ..!) Excellent playing too, Amanda !
@Carnegie Hall do you mind updating my last name to Blaikie? Amanda Blaikie is my legal name now. :) It's fun looking back on this masterclass-- can't believe it's been 7 years!
7 years later, how are you now? Any improvement? Hope you've stuck through... Imagine how you could be playing if you have practiced everyday for 7 years...
I've been to masterclasses and he's not being that particular. She needs to work on a flexible embouchure so the lower notes are stronger even if it's marked piano needs focus. When an actor whispers on stage they need the audience to hear them.

That haunting tone of the wooden flute.👌
They both have such wonderful resonating tones! I can hear it even through my computer so well, especially that of Mr. Blau's; it's so pleasant.

Where is he, retired?

both teacher and student are wonderful...very professional and student will go a long way with the talent and with such wonderful teaching.
He's so particular! It really makes the playing more special. Great job, Amanda. :)
Ah there are two types of flute players in this world. There are those who can play their flute, and those who can make their flute sing!
i hope to be the latter someday
Beethoven always in the present. Music which is here and now!

Wow, this is really helpful! I am learning this excerpt along with some others for grad school auditions, so I am glad that this was posted!
He's a very good teacher..
this guy is awesome
5:00 flute solo section ❣️

0:41 is very similar to Schubert's 8 symphony motif (in the development it's in the same key)
Wow, Amanda, your tone is so rich!!
I'm learning this now and it looks and sounds so difficult! I think I'm going to make learning how to play this perfectly one of my life goals :P
This guy makes me wish I played flute
I wish someday I could be this good
Si se puedes
What I am trying to say is "Yes, you can."
7 years later, how are you now? Any improvement? Hope you've stuck through...

"it's not very much, but i think a little bit" 😂😂😂
AddictedFishing1 if you think this girl has better tone than the bloody Principal Flute of Berlin Philharmonic you'd better get a new pair of ears.
Fantástico!!!
the professor is using a wooden flute, and his tone is good
A wonderful teaching !!
Very Good
I wish the beggining is so fast but unfortunately its two times slower...
Haha, was thinking the same thing...
Why doesn't she fix her stand?
Will you guys ever post a third masterclass clip of Francesco Camuglia?
Fabulous
@ Smood47. Yes Pahud will put Blau out of commission
thank you!!!
awesome
"It's not very much...but, I think...a little bit."
He's referring to the vibrato and pressing on each note a little more.
Here is Francesco Camuglia on Hindemith's Symphonic Metamorphosis: ruclips.net/video/jIioZXvnZiw/видео.html

Id love him to teach me!
Does anyone know which flute the young woman is playing?
삐라빱빠 very nice
wow she has great tone

Which scale flute is the professor using?
Just a normal c flute, you don’t ever really see much else in the orchestral world. It is a custom made wooden one by Braun however
Pahud will destroy Blau.
+Smood47 But Rampal will destroy Pahud.
And Dufour will match Pahud
I know she’s the “student” but I really much prefer her sound over his.
Exact.the mic and the instrument
This side embouchure thing this girl and some players do annoys the heck out of me. I'm not saying its wrong but it just looks so weird.
Smood47 I just wanted to know a little more about what did you say.. What do you mean saying that? I'm very curious, really
the position of her mouth as she plays is twisted to the side
Smood47 it helps with tone. For me, and othere.
As I said, I didn't say its wrong. Just annoying.
Smood47 I know, I see it, and it does look weird. But like I said for some it helps, and for some, not so much.
Took her a little long to understand what he was saying
Oscar P Hinojosa maybe she was nervous!
Comments like these ruin my enjoyment of master class videos. It's just unnecessary. Like what's your goal? lol
I'm so sorry, but Jean Baxtresser is the most amazing orchestral flutist. Not to to mention the best teacher. This doesn't work for me.
Her tone is 100 times better than the prof's!
The problem is hes playing with a wooden flute so its hard to compare. Its a totally different timbre of sound.
Unfortunately this is not true. Also, each player has their own sound.
um no
Sure, that's why Andreas Blau played in BPhO for 46 years... 🙄
