  • One question we get all the time is: how do I adjust to my new hearing aids? We have some tips from a couple Hearing Group hearing professionals on how to adjust to new hearing aids in this video.
If you just got new hearing aids and you're struggling to adjust, Ryian Crenshaw, BC-HIS, and Caylie Schmidt, HIS, from our Ponca City and Stillwater offices have a few tips for you - whether you're a new user or you've been wearing hearing aids but now have new technology.
A first-time hearing aid wearer is used to hearing the world with their hearing loss, so when they put hearing aids on, the environmental sounds they were missing before can be overwhelming. One thing that's important for a new user to adjust to hearing is their own voice! Reading aloud for 10-20 minutes a day can help with that. Another thing to get used to is the television or radio. People with hearing loss often listen to TV at a much higher volume than normal before getting hearing aids - ask a friend or family member what a normal volume should be for watching TV or listening to the radio and find a comfortable range. If a new hearing aid user is struggling to adjust to environmental noises such as traffic, we might start them wearing the hearing aids for only a few hours a day and working their way up to the full day. But ultimately, we want our patients to be wearing their hearing aids all day every day because that's how they get the most benefit out of it.
Sometimes new hearing aid users feel that their prescription is a little too much at first, and we have ways to help with that! Most manufacturers have what we call an Adaptation Manager which allows us to bring your prescription down to about 70 or 80% and gradually work up to the full 100%, and your hearing aids will automatically do that for you so you don't have to come back into the office to get adjusted multiple times.
For existing hearing aid users who are getting into new technology, the new technology can sometimes be overwhelming because of the upgrades and how that new technology processes sound. Our number one tip for hearing aid wearers adjusting to new, upgraded technology is to wear your hearing aids all day every day to allow yourself to acclimate.
Don't forget - one of the biggest mistakes you can make, whether you're a new user or an existing user adjusting to new technology, is to not talk to your hearing care professional. Make sure you let your hearing professional know if you're having any problems with your hearing aids. It could be that you just need a small adjustment that they can easily take care of, talk to them!
