Innocents is a strong word, man. They had molotovs, bro. Tried as they might have to make us hate JD and embrace the idea of Kait being the new protagonist, they just made JD actually interesting. @@ODST_Bailey Wtf is wrong with you? Civillian protestors with molotovs aren’t a threat to soldiers with high-end military equipment. You have to be an idiot or a fascist to believe killing rioters is a good idea. That shit is literally how you end up with domestic terrorism.

Why did they portray JD as bad? If what Fahz said was true, JD had the right to open fire at them, it’s no like he pulled off a Tiananmen on innocent civvies
The drones also have stun ammunition. He could’ve done that instead. But he could’ve panicked. Besides, we don’t know how far the drones went before the confrontation ended. Bystanders and peaceful protesters could’ve been killed too.
The writers fumbled the bag, big. And they know it, they don't how to continue their version of the Sequel Trilogy, so they're just doing a prequel instead.
I never liked the way they portrayed JD’s decisions. He’s constantly being put in situations where there’s no clear cut “correct” or “right” outcome. The protest became violent, what the hell was he supposed to do? Let incendiaries be thrown and endanger people he’s in charge of? The swarm are baring down on his squad and a SHITLOAD of civilians, WHAT WAS HE SUPPOSED TO DO? It was either guarantee their deaths by not firing the hammer, or take the best chance he had at getting everyone out alive. I don’t blame him for hiding the truth from his friends. He would have to live with the people he killed no matter what he did.
I actually kind of like the character arc they did for JD. He was pretty boring and typical male protagonist type in Gears 4. Having this baggage made him interesting. Added more depth to the story than Gears usually has.
In Gears 4, JD was bland and boring. In the first act of Gears 5, knowing what he had done, Marcus telling him to ''Stop showing off, you're gonna get yourself or someone killed'' and does that Hammer of Dawn shit got me so excited for his character arc. And then the game cuts you to Kait. Not that he's the worst character, i do think her ''connection'' to the Hive is a little bit forced and i would much prefer seeying JD's point of view of the story, but the new characters are better than in the last game. Except that Del is just there and doesn't add much
i loved gears 5 but this entire shitshow was nothing but forced drama to make JD hated to push Kait as the main character should have had two arching stories not just kaits.
If we're really gonna talk about forced, let's talk about the Fahzy bear in the corner.. "Stfu Fahz" was the line I was waiting to hear the whole time throughout the game
Too be honest tho fahz was talking to someone who had more authority over him so it goes like shut the fuck up fahz never speak to sargeant like that lol never argue with someone who has seen shit lost friends to it
In my opinion, if they wanted to have Kait as the primary character then they should have made a game based around her kind of like what they did with Baird in Judgement, and call it something like "Gears of War: Bloodline" or something title that alludes to the plot of the story.
JD was boring, but then his character becomes interesting and then they give us a character literally nobody cared for and everybody would rather have be the new villain tbh
I just bought this game and everything seems to be going well until chapter II I don't know but they way the game's story tries to paint J.D in a bad picture seems so forced and how Del and Kait suddenly just hated the guy without even trying to talk or reason with him during that chapter after all they have been through just because Fahz said so is some bullshit story telling to me..
It’s not forced. It was foreshadowed multiple times in that chapter that JD was hiding something concerning that incident. Kait and Del didn’t hate him they were confused and angry. And rightly so because this whole time he openly denounced the incident but was the one to kickstart it. To add insult to injury they had to learn the truth from an antisocial ego maniac like Fahz instead of the friend they placed all their trust. They felt betrayed. They didn’t get a chance to talk because more swarm and swarmaks were coming and for 4 months he pushed them away and became cold.

Reason they needed to keep JD as the leading protagonist. Its okay to dislike the character but the evolution and highlight was stripped away by gears 5. He is still in the middle of a change but he was sidelined too quickly and make him seem like not ever going to live up to the Fenix name.
