October 2024. GE dryer with no heat. Watched your video, same purple wire problem. Had the spade on hand and fixed it as instructed. Thanks for posting a video that continues to be awesome years later!
Glad to hear we could help you get it repaired even with a video from that long ago. Thanks for watching and taking the time to leave us a comment. If you didn't could you give the video a thumbs up so its easier for others to find. Thanks
This video was spot on! It gave me the confidence to try myself and I was successful. Saved money vs calling repairman or buying a new machine! Thank you!!!!
I was torn between getting a service guy out here and buying a new dryer. Your video saved me a bunch of money either way and was really neat to do it myself. Thank you so much 🙏🏼
This Video was so great for Fixing my GE dryer this morning - The parts place was even open till' noon (it is Saturday). Thank you. The dryer is up and running for another decade now and working better than ever - esp. w. the 3 new shims / sliders for the drum, the old ones had worn down, just like in your vid, and the drum was chewing into the plastic housing, just like in your vid. There was so much fuzz and lint in it, I am sure there could have been a fire down the road, which would have been lame to say the least. We got the dryer with the house when we purchased it last summer. It is now officially clean and vacuumed, just like you recommended. Next I'll clean the vent tube outside, or swap it out - I have seen those %50 plugged as well before.
Hi. I am having a hard time finding out the coils part number. I found some parts for GE on eBay. But I don't wanna gamnle. Every site on like doesn't have the part. Not sure if they sell the whole assembly for 160$. I only need the coils and sliders. There is 3 drum sliders. Can't find the part number no where. Any help would be appreciated it
Just a note, after scratching and very denting the side of my dryer, I was able to see the ignighter was working fine, so I didn't need to use the one I bought, but I have it just in case. It was one of the solenoid valve coils, I replaced them both. I do not recommend having any small children around when doing this fix! and have bandaids handy.
Thanks for the video! Watched a few other videos for instructions on how to swap the igniter but I was having trouble removing the drum. My dryer model looks exactly like the one in your video and I was able to change it without removing the drum per your instructions. You saved me a headache! Thanks again!
Great, Glad to hear you got it fixed. Ya its just more work unbolting the and removing the drum on most of them you can squeeze it out the front. Thanks for letting us know and for watching. Don't forget to give the video a thumbs up/ like if you haven't already. Thanks
Awesome, Glad to hear we could help get you back up and going. Thanks for watching and taking the time to leave us a comment. Don't forget to give the video a thumbs up. Thanks
@@anthonylopez8958 did you figured it out and what parts number those are?? I can't find no part number. And did find some coils on eBay but I can't be 100% sure it's gonna work. I can't find no part number and most of the sites don't carry just the coils. eBay it's the only site.
Thanks a lot. I have a different style of igniter in mine but the rest is identical. I'm off to the city tomorrow to see if I can find a replacement. All the best from Panama
THERE! I FIXED IT! now I just gotta taken down the 300 feet of paracord I had everything drying on...my house looks like a spiderweb.... put away my tools and emptys... and and and, Thank You God for helping me get through this, God bless the guy that made it look so easy, God Bless the folks that make bandaids, God, Bless the folks in Mexico that are still making parts for our appliances. Awesome video! COUPLE of questions, can you see the glow from the back Inspection panel? And the "coils" are those on the gas valve? 2 bonus questions, continuity be used to test the igniter or coils..? Thank you so much, great video shoeing how to get to those parts! And get it back together. 😂 there are gaps in some of my projects. 😮
When I opened it the end was blocked, so that's why mine had no peep hole. My igniter looks new. I'm trying to test it with a voltmeter. Thanks for the reply.

My intermittently heats. I have to start it like 10 times to get the heat to start up. Could you give me an idea where to start? I ordered the coils and they should be in soon. If the coils don't do it, do I do the flame sensor next or do I replace the igniter? Thanks!
Man I’ve been troubleshooting my ge gas dryer. I’ve replace the ignitor and coils and not I’ve found out the ignitor isn’t coming on. I’ve check all temp sensor and the flame sensor all have continuity I’ve also took the timer apart and it looks brand new inside. Any insite would be awesome. The ignitor does not light. Each wire on the ignitor has 120v to dryer body but going across the two wire it never gets voltage. Please help!!

I am quite puzzled by my GE dryer model GTD42GASJ1WW. It is not heating. I opened it up and removed the drum for access to the burner and to replace the belt. I tested the thermal fuse, thermostats in the back, the burner heat sensor and coils which all test good. I kept the front panel connected. When I push and hold the start button the motor turns. If I keep the button depressed sometimes the ignitor glows and sometimes the gas ignites. As soon as I release the button all shut off. When I do this with the belt tensioner in position to activate its switch I get the the same results. But I have not tested the cycling thermostat on the blower housing GE #WE04X25196 because I am not sure how to test it - I assume it is an outlet temperature sensor.
What is the model number of this GE Gas Dryer? I have this same model dryer, but the model number sticker is missing. I need to replace the coils for sure, but I'm not sure what the part numbers would be since I don't have my model number. Thanks in advance!
I don't Think in the 15 years of myself having to work on multiple of GE dryers I have ever had to replace the thermal fuse. Its always been either the coils or ignitor. Not sure if yours has the little peep hole in the front cover. If it does you can start the dryer look into it and see if the ignitor glows red hot if it does then its most likely the coils not letting the gas flow. If the ignitor doesn't glow red hot the the ignitor needs to be replaced, most of the time there's a break in it somewhere. The safe bet is just to replace both as you are already that far into taking it apart.
man your hand is made of steel? how did u not get any cuts lol. by the way I have GE gas dryer looks similar, I have no heat either I want to start with the thermal fuse but I cant find it.
You're welcome. On some dryers you can slide the belt off and remove the drum others the drum bearing holds the drum in so you need to remove rear cover and undo the drum bearing and then the belt. More work then its worth taking all that apart and putting back together would be different if you needed to do belt, pulley or the drum bearing.
@@TheDIYGuyDOTnet Thanks for bringing that out. I didn't know that on some dryers you had to remove the rear cover in order to get the drum out. More work is never fun.
GE dryer was not drying. Replaced ignitor, coil, and the rusting burner assembly. Still no drying. ignitor and flame are visible in the mirror. Flame cycles every 60 seconds for 60 seconds. Checked the exhaust. The flow is strong. The exhaust hose gets warm. Removed the exhaust hose to check exhaust air temp. Placed hand in the flow. Somewhere I have read that exhaust temp should be 200 deg F. This does not feel like 200 deg F. Scratching head. Any ideas? Thanks.
Mine was the gas solenoids, but I decided to replace the flame sensor, thermostat and ignitor too and give everything a good cleaning. Runs like new. Could they put an even cheaper belt in these things? This country makes nothing but junk.
My whirlpool dryer got new solenoid coils and part near thermal fue. Still not heating the dryer. IT turns on flame, click noise then no burner flame on. What can it be?
So the dryer got a set of new coils and what part near the flue? The igniter? The flame sensor? So are you saying the igniter is working glowing red and lighting the flame but then after a few the flame goes out? So short cycling? Does it re-light later in the cycle or only light that once? When a gas dryer short cycles the problem might be with an airflow. A way to test air flow or if the vent pipe is clogged. First inspect the dryer pipe exit make sure that if it has a louvered dryer vent that it moves freely also make sure that they exit if free and clear of lint if it has a screen. If you end up cleaning it or adjusting it retest the dryer to see if it better. If the louvers move freely and it was clean there maybe a clog or restriction somewhere within the line. To test that have a medium size load of cloths in the dryer as an empty drum/dryer doesn't take long to reach temperature and will shut the flame off quickly. Next open all windows/doors and VENT THE ROOM where the dryer is located as much as possible then remove the the vent hose from back of the dryer. Most of the time a lazy flame is caused by restricted air flow and also for the dryer reaching temp quickly. With a wet load in the dryer and the vent hose off you can see if the flame stays on longer by running the dryer. DO NOT LET IT RUN FOR A LONG TIME just see if the flame stays on longer then it did before. The fumes that a gas dryer emits are dangerous. (carbon monoxide) If it stays on longer then shut dryer off and then proceed to clean the dryer vent duct pipe. You can use something like this amzn.to/33wJUny to get the venting pipe clean.
GE dryer little to no heat, could see it was lit underneath, replaced the coils (they came as a pair) for $23...5 mins to install. Boom! back up and running.
What if the dryer produces heat sometimes but not always? The dryer works fine for most loads of clothes but then there are times when the clothes are damp and cold after the cycle ends.
It could be either the igniter not getting hot enough or having the right resistance to tell the coils to open and let the gas flow or it could be the coils them self going bad and not letting the gas valve open every time. Replacing both would ensure you fix the problem and that you would only have to take it apart one time. If it happens when you run loads back to back I would lean towards the igniter being the problem.
Some have a sight hole on the side so its not on the front side of the machine. You can take it apart and remove both coils. Then grab a test meter and put one lead to each of the pins of the two pin coil and it should have between 1000-2000 ohms of resistance. For the three pin coil keep one lead on the common pin which with the coil sitting as it would installed, and the pins facing away from you, it would be the far right outside pin. Then test the middle and the other outside pin and they both should be between 300 to 2000. Even this test is not a sure thing. Also with the dryer apart check the igniter and see if its broken/ cracked.
@@TheDIYGuyDOTnet Thank you! It's actually under the dryer and you use a mirror to view the flame. Doesn't work well at all. I'll probably drill a hole in the front.
@@GGarcia7111 Sorry, it's been 3 years and I don't remember clearly, other than that I eventually got the problem fixed. I do know that I drilled a hole in the front panel and got a clear view of the igniter.
if you put a piece of cardboard over the front to block light you should be able to see if its lit or not on the floor or if you pull the dryer out you can look from the back through some of the holes to the front to see if its getting lit. Either way you have to be laying on the floor.
Hello, the igniter will only try glowing when the dryer is plugged on and turned on. You don't want to turn it on with the front half off as it is going to turn the drum and without the front part on you wont have the front drum slides. If you were to take the belt off and hold the belt switch then you could do it with the front off. Sometimes there are panels in the back that you can remove to see if its glowing.
