  • Bait Finesse is here to stay!! If you're wondering what BFS is for and how to do it, you aren't alone! In today's Buyer's Guide we're covering our favorite BFS baits, rods and reels for casting ultralight presentations with casting gear. If you're not familiar with BFS, anything you've ever done with a spinning rod can now be done with a bait caster, and with even more precision. Plus, it's a lot of fun!
    BFS has been around for decades but has exploded into the US Market in the last 2 years. The arrival of the Shimano Curado BFS Reel, now followed by many others, has opened the door for a wave of anglers to experience BFS without paying outrageous prices for high end JDM rod and reel imports. If you've ever been curious about this incredible way of fishing, now is the time!
    Below you'll find links to all the rods, reels, and baits discussed in the video. We've included favorite sizes and colors where applicable to make it as easy as possible for you to find the items you want. All the links go directly to Tackle Warehouse where you can see detailed photos and descriptions of each item.

    BFS has changed my view on fishing so much. Brought me to appreciate small game and love the sport even more. Those 1/4-1/2 pound largemouth have me grinning ear to ear. When I hook onto a 3 pounder, that’s when BFS shines for me because the fight is unreal

    I use a Phenix Classic BFS rod with an Aldebaran and I love this combo. It can do treble hook baits and bottom contact baits well. It's not a good option for BFS pitching because it can't really turn a fish like a Curado rod can. I've had bigger fish bury themselves in grass before I could pull them out. I catch trout and crappie with it too.

    I ended my open water season up here in Michigan with a new PB 6.08lb smallmouth on my Dobyns 740c/Curado BFS, talk about ending the season with a bang! Was throwing the Tactical Finesse Underspin but it was super calm & glassy & I kept getting followers & short strikes, so I switched to the Guppy Head with the 2.8" Keitech & 2 casts later was hooked up with the ride of my life! That feeling when you make an adjustment & it pays off! "I AM THE SMARTEST MAN ALIVE!" 🤣😭

    I got into BFS a couple of yrs ago cause I wanted to throw smaller crank baits and not have to deal with line twists and I now have 8 BFS combos. I've caught a 6 lbs trout, a 6 lbs striper and about a 3 lbs bass this year so it's not just for small fish. This system definitely takes fishing fun a few notches up. I even caught one on a tiny Papinka frog.

    I bit the bullet last year after watching your videos and how enthusiastic you both were an I have to say I think I used the BFS gear more than anything last year. Small fish are fun but you are spot on when you catch 3-4 lb. bass it can handle it and you are like a kid. Best thing I have purchased and with no doubt the Shimano Curado is nothing but spectacular
    . I have had Daiwa baitcasters for most of my life and Shimano spinning reels but after this last purchase I have to say it opened my eyes. Whatever your preference BFS is going to change the way you fish at times.

    so funny to see how excited Matt is to talk about this coming from his background. Little story, following this same line of logic regarding smaller presentations: On a particular smallmouth lake guys loved to throw a jig with a trailer, I discovered a certain tungsten jig and certain trailer combination that downsized my presentation from what everyone else was using and it was like fishing a new lake. All the places the fish where used to seeing 3/8-1/2oz jigs and a full size trailer. I would throw a 1/4 oz tungsten jig with a 3 inch trailer and yes, when you got bit it was different kind of bite than what was typical with a larger jig. Blew my mind that year. Also size was not an issue, caught way more fish and that included way more larger fish as well. Plenty of 4-5# smallmouth on the boat.

    Can you guys do a video on BFS line choices for different techniques? I’m a little confused which strength line to go, when to use braid vs fluoro, how long of a leader to use, etc. What is the best universal setup? I’m using 10lb braid on my Curado BFS now. What techniques to use straight braid vs techniques that need to have a 6lb fluoro leader for example?

    • @mitchellorr3922
      @mitchellorr3922 Месяц назад

      I can't provide the same level of advice but I do have a little insight. Visibility plays a big part in what choice you make. If you're in super clear water, flouro or a flouro leader is probably the way. If you're in stained water, it's not as critical. You can run straight braid.

  • @clintonbruning

    Ive converted my whole program to bait finesse combos and I have just downsized all my presentations to under 3” for my my topwaters, cranks, jerks, swimbaits, chatterbaits, and jigs and the results I’ve seen fishing in pressured lakes in north Texas have amazed me! It’s a wild thing to see 6-8 lb bass eat baits under 2” like a rapala ultralight crank or 1/16th oz jig. Y’all killed it here, the duo baits slay and that shad 57 MR jerkbait is my favorite winter jerkbait. I think the bfs griffons are amazing, but the best really small crank I’ve thrown that can go a little deeper even and out produce the griffin here is the rapala ultralight cranks. Also if I can add a couple categories here, tiny jigs like a keitech, moondog, or Jackson spin jigs are soooo lethal around the prespawn, I throw 1/16th oz size and it’s what I use with say a 2”eurotackle b vibe or metacraw to replace ned rig fishing and the quality you can catch on the small jigs is similar to a big one on the right body of water. Micro chatterbaits and flashback size chatterbaits are also a bait I think can draw a bite like a little crank when nothing else will work. And I’ve had a blast this year with tiny glidebaits like the era baits tiny glide and jackall baby giron, gancraft makes a size 70 one too. It’s amazing big fish are drawn to the under 3” glides just like bigger ones. You can still get the kastking zephyrs for 74 bucks on Amazon, but my favorite reel is the TSU dark wolf for budget options, and that dobyns Sierra especially the 701c Can do it all for me. Y’all got me into this 2 years ago and it’s been a blast ever since then thanks! Check out some of my edits if you wanna see some big Texas bass caught on ultralight casting gear 🤘🏽

    Love how you make walking a bait on spinning gear like something that is impossible. I literally do it all the time. And I find it easier to walk a bait on spinning.

      Some folks prefer baitcasting. It's like they said, you can go down to stuff usually reserved for spinning gear but not change your cast or the cadence of your retrieve. Plus you retain the accuracy and speed of a baitcast reel and jack the fun factor off the charts.
      Spinning tackle is pretty much what kids graduate to from spincast reels until they've gained the skill and dexterity to handle a baitcaster. In short...spinning gear is just plain boring. 🤷🏼‍♂️

    Love the BFS craze! However, I get annoyed with the notion that it was developed as just a "more fun way to catch average-size fish." ... BFS was developed as a more dialed way of fishing ultra-small hard baits for fish that are keyed in on small baitfish. Not because it was more fun, but because in some pressured lakes and streams, that's all they'll commit to... When it came over to the U.S., it seems like bunch of guys latched onto it as simply a "fun alternative" to spinning gear, but that's not really why it was developed. In Japan it fills a specific niche (or set of techniques) that doesn't necessarily replace spinning gear, but is geared specifically toward working ultra-small reaction baits.

    I probably have a very weird question for you. First of all, I live in Northern Indiana and usually use very high end spinning gear. I’m wanting to buy a high end baitcaster, but want a BFS that can still throw a heavy 1/4 ounce without to much problem. I was focused on the Shimano Aldebaran because I heard it was one of the best, but I also heard that 1/4 ounce might be too much for that particular reel. I also would like a recommendation with the power level of the rod. I probably won’t be throwing super light stuff, but will try something like the small jerkbaits that you recommended. The bass in the lakes that I fish on might max out at 5lbs and I might catch something that reaches 10lbs. but the majority of fish in my area are small. Also, I usually fish with 6-8 lb test.

    Loving all the BFS content! -- I am so grateful to have these videos as a resource. -- I was wondering if you would recommend using BFS gear in fishing tournament settings? --- I fish MLF BFL & MLF Toyota Series events as a Co-Angler. -- Many times as a Co-Angler fishing downsized finesse baits is the only way to get bites and land fish. --- Would you recommend using BFS gear in tournaments? -- I fear the lighter line could be a problem with landing fish, but I would love to fish a Karashi over the top of hydrilla beds or on flats, and I think some of the smaller jerkbaits and even micro-chatterbaits could get bites that typical sized tackle wouldn't produce from the back of the boat. --- Any thoughts would be awesome....with being limited to 6 or so rods I am interested in possibly bringing a few bfs rigs soon. -- Thank yall for the incredible videos and content! -Tres -- Texas

A couple of years ago I found a my last 30 year old bag of clear blue and brown original Merlo worms. the kind that looked like a 1.5" sluggo except you fished them upside down, nose hooked. mini Carolina rig using 1/8 lead in-line spinner bodies for the sinker. they worked so well still. I had kept 6 bags for as long as i could. and I remembered being upset when i lost it because it was the best color. lol

    The new TW website isn’t all that bad guy’s, it’s not as good as it WAS, but it’s a hell of a lot better than everything else out there. I agree the Holliday sales this year were kinda confusing and I didn’t enjoy trying to figure it out. My biggest issue and Idk if it was just me or not but I think most of the so called sales weren’t even sales, it seems they show an item with a price that was actually higher than the price normally is, then they showed that price crossed out and the Holliday/sale price next to it. Problem is that sale price was the normal price they ALWAYS cost! THEY just marked the price up during the holidays and act like it’s on sale now when in reality that’s the price it always costs..

    • @tacticalbassin
      @tacticalbassin  8 месяцев назад

      There are a few glitches on the site but overall we really like it too. Regarding the sales, it sounds like you may not realize what all is actually on sale. For years now, the "listed" sale brands are just what they're allowed to post without breaking MAP pricing requirements, but all the others are on sale too. You have to complete the purchases to see the savings on the receipt but it's all on sale at its respective time. It's currently rods and ALL rods are on sale, despite what is listed.

    A bit off topic but has anyone noticed Tackle Warhouse has changed their website format, especially for rods?? The table for each series doesn't list the manf model name / number. Instead it's some other TW part number. If you select the rod length and action then hit VIEW SPECS, it shows the OEM model number (SO THEY HAVE THE INFO). The OEM model name/number needs to be in the table so we can simply scroll and click the OEM part name without checking a half dozen combinations by length / action and pressing "view specs".

    Shimano just release the ARMA JOINT 60F/60S ... plus if the conquest 6'6" Medium MBR is too expensive, there's budget version in the GLX line up, which also available for those doesn't to drop $600+, the GLX version is much affordable. on top of that I feel the GLX version is much softer due to because it doesn't have the High-Power X and Spiral X on to the blank, but you guys can play with it, i want to know on your guys thoughts on the GLX 6'6" Medium Fast MBR for upper-end BFS application like the Conquest you guys mention here
