우리나라 전역에 나며, 일본에도 분포한다.
높은 산 숲속에 비교적 드물게 자라는 여러해살이풀이다.
뿌리는 건조하여 약재로 사용한다.
현삼은 꽃은 녹색이 도는 노란색이고, 토현삼은 꽃받침 열편의 길이가 폭보다 2배 이상 길고 끝은 뾰족하므로 구분된다. (한반도의생물다양성)
