Just so you know for next time, you don't have to remove the front bumper. You can pop off those small inserts/caps right below the headlights. Or, if you can't get those off, you can remove the foglight grill and access the bottom bolt through there.
Great video and thanks for the link! I think I'm going to make a purchase! I have an white 09 GTI and I notice the lights adjust themselves each time the car is turned on. Do these lights do the same thing? Also, do the original lights also have that adjustment screw?
Yeah these lights are identical to the old ones. They also have the screw to adjust manual but these cars if they have the self leveling headlights the sensors actually attached to the lower control arm it has nothing to do with the headlight housing. The sensor will automatically adjust the level of the headlights if equipped
I'm running duel LEDs in the low beam housing. Not sure what I'm going to use in the high beam housing, yet. Maybe red for out bush. I had to move the high beam wires over so I might make a separate switch for the HB housing
Are these OEM from VW, or OEM style aftermarket? It looks great. My clips are broken and one headlight is yellowed out and was wondering if its worth getting a new one for that one side. I noticed some websites sell the "housing only" and you have to transfer the items over vs buying the entire assembly.
These are not from VW they’re an aftermarket oem set. I got them as the housings alone and had to swap bulbs over. I’d suggest doing that since it’ll be cheaper but that’s up to you. If you want simplicity and don’t care about spending the extra money I’d get the sets where it comes with the lights completely. Of course you can go oem from the dealer but that’ll be expensive too! Replace in pairs of possible
Hey I just watched your video I liked it I have a 2008 GTI just like the one you have and I'm looking for some lights just like you have replaced can you give me an idea where I can find those at
for the adjustment : I think on this model you're supposed to put the headlights "in the adjustment position" using a VAG-COM before you touch the white plastic screw
I bought a replacement headlight and the inner front bolt fixture was broken off (the one you remove at 5:41). Do you think I can still install it by just securing it via the top and bottom bolts?
This video is a huge help 👍🏻. Currently in the process of switching out my headlights on my mk5 rabbit. Any suggestions on where you bought the T20 screws?
Thanks! Glad we can be helpful for ya. Unfortunately I’d say your best bet is at VW dealer or online. They’re not as common so I don’t know if the local hardware stores carry them.
Hello, can you tell me the name of the headlights or where you bought them, I want to install them too, I suspect you have xenon on your car. Leave me a link if possible where you got them. Thanks a lot! I give super on the car, I appreciate the work done.
Hoping you can help. I'm guessing your gti had halogen lights as standard. Did you just put the xenons in and plug them in with an adapter? What do you code in vcds? And then do they work like normal from that point
My GTI came stock with XENON HIDs. Most GTIs should. Usually the golfs come with halogen. But to put aftermarket HIDs in youd need to get a ballast, wire up to the battery etc. I’d suggest go LED so it’s a direct plug n play
@@RatchetWrenches ah I only thought that as I didn't see any washer caps but I now remember that is a European thing. Yeah its a bit hard trying to sort out xenonxs from Halogens. I guess I will have to do lots more research. Still a very useful video. No idea the bumper came off so easily.
@@kimilesnipez gotcha yeah I guess depending on where you live it’ll vary on what comes from factory but thank you for watching! I’m sure online you can find a lot of help
have you ever hit a bump and your bulb falls over? When I'm driving at night and I hit a bump my bulbs fall and get misaligned aiming at the ground providing no light at all. any tips or thoughts?
I haven’t had an issue like that but my guess would be the tabs that lock the bulb in place are broken on one of the sides causing it to stay in place but with a bump it’ll dislodge it. Check to see if one of the 3 tabs is broken. That’s my best guess!
Also I'm having a problem with my fog lights they'll come on but then they go off do you have any idea what that could be could it be a fuse or do you think one of the fog lights are burned out
For the fog lights if it was a burnt out bulb it wouldn’t light at all, same with a fuse. But since it goes on then out I’d checked the wiring, could be a loose connection and a bump can make it turn off
Thanks for the comment and yeah the quality is rather good! Considering we’re swapping the oem ballast and headlights so really it’s only the shell that’s not oem and it acts like oem so I’d say it’s quality!
I’m doing my new headlights this week , I have yellow H7 high beam bulbs and the euro switch . Any way to run the yellow lights with the parking lights or the yellow bulbs are just for high beam use mainly ?
Unfortunately the yellow bulbs are only for the high beams. I’m sure if you get into vagcom or obd11 you can probably code them to run with the parking lights but I’m not too sure
@@RatchetWrenches hello there. I wanna ask that about the headlight u bought in this link Is that fit for the mk5 gti originally come with xenon light? And using the stock d2s bulb instead of halogen bulb! Huge difference! Looks like a new car again. Great tutorial.

you can't access the screw through the cap if you have headlight washers
@@DanielRevay bummer
If you pull out the fog light grills you can access the lower headlamp bolts without removing bumper
Interesting I did not know that! Thanks for the tip 👌🏼

I bought a replacement headlight and the inner front bolt fixture was broken off (the one you remove at 5:41). Do you think I can still install it by just securing it via the top and bottom bolts?
Did you just pull the plug? Or press it somewhere then pull it out? Am havinh a hard time pulling the headlight itself.
There’s a safety on the plug that will prevent the plug from just being pulled out. So you have to pull back on the safety before removing the plug
Where did you get the pcv plate with the conectors for the catch can?

Are you referring to the Day Time Running Lights (DRLS)?
they go on *only* when the main HIDs are off, AND you flash the high-beam stalk.
