It amazes me how well written Homestuck is. Like, I know it's super complex and thought out, but every time I watch one of your videos, it seems that there was a new layer I wasn't aware of!! And it's not just complicated ideas, it's how well executed they are. Really, Homestuck is really mind-blowing.
You focused solely on the class part of ancestry. And obviously that’s part of it! But Rose going grimdark was her becoming full of Void, yes? Well, what if her ancestor was a Rouge of Void, then maybe it was an even better example of role play than initially thought, if we consider her as role playing Void. I think it’s harder to see aspect role play due to the fact that most characters share an aspect with their ancestor, but look at John, who also has life aspects, bringing agency back into the story; or look at Jade, who always tried to be a source of optimism and belief. Ect ect. Point is that we always forget about how we role play aspects too.
I've seen it as Rose attempting to reject her destiny and trying to become what is essentially a Mage of Void. She let herself be influenced by the horrorterrors, Void, and attempted to play an *active* role in going straight for Jack Noir. Needless to say, this did not end well.
The main thing for me is I'm honestly not sure if people roleplay Aspects the same way they do Classes. Some evidence seems to point to that possibility, but other evidence conflicts. I mentioned it once while talking about Rose, but here I felt it would detract from and overcomplicate the point, which is the way descendants echo/try to imitate their ancestors' actions and personalities.
These videos inspired me to reread homestuck, and it's been a thoroughly rewarding experience. Thank you so much for putting in the no doubt extreme effort it takes to make this series.
Great video! This also made me think of the fact that, in the dancestor's session, didnt they have the alternia trolls as ancestors? It is mentioned that Feferi was able to put her wellfare definition of cull into effect, so Aradia could also be starting to take after her actual ancestor of the pre-scratch Vriska
People like you enhance my life with video essays like these. You clearly outline an in-depth exploration of media I already consume, thereby granting me a better understanding of what they are communicating to me. By doing this, you teach me how to perform such analyses on other media I interact with, giving me a better understanding of the world around me. As a result, I learn what I understand and understand what I learn. Thank you, Duelist. You really are a seer!
Cathie Upchurch perhaps those are the only sessions not destined to be scratched in the first place; keep in mind the alpha trolls failed not because they failed at the game, but because the session was glitched, without an ectolqb, which made it necessary for them to scratch, even tho in paradox space the beta trolls were already in existence
This is the main reason why I think natural born players can't win The Game. The scratch only changes the date the meteors with the babys will arrive, so if there are no ecto-babys the scratch can't be done, leaving the players only one shot to win.
Bianca Jager who knows though, it would still change the timeline, maybe one of their descendants plays instead or alternatively timeline version. It would be like the Butterfly Effect where changing one thing changes everything.
It's amazing how well developed the kids' interactions with and development from their surroundings is in Homestuck! Awesome video, really loved the cool analysis of Vriska and Aranea :D

I'm equal parts surprised and thankful that you've passed over the genetic significance of Ancestors in favour of their psycho-social impact. While the jury is still out on the argument of nature vs. nurture IRL, Homestuck seems to come down *hard* on the side of nurture and as such the value of Ancestors (regardless of species) in the terms of biology and genetics, while obvious, isn't quite as great as a lot of people seem to think. I know I was deep in that camp for a good long while. The genetics involved seems more like a formality of sorts, a necessary nod towards "real life" ancestry to establish the strong links necessary for the heroes to begin experimenting with and adapting from their Ancestors' examples. Perhaps there's a parallel to be drawn there between the paradox-cloning procedure and LE's "backdoor into reality"? It's all part of the same Moebius strip of insane, backwards causality after all.
These types of videos are so helpful for folks like me who just could not grasp certain aspects (heh) of Homestuck!! It's explained so clearly and really helped me actually understand what everything means.

And as you say, Dave learns after *years* of hardships to make that destructive tendency work for who he is, surpassing the abusive parts of his upbringing and accepting the parts worth emulating, and Dirk finally finds a use for those martyr tendencies that lets him *actually* be a good brother and a good friend and a good Knight. huh you know, I never gave much significance to the idea of roleplay, I thought it was more of just this weird thing characters would do and there really shouldn't be any formal notation of it. However, this has given me a new view on the dynamic, and the relations between generations, namely, that it does matter quite a bit. It seems to take into account the natural oscillations life has as well between generations. You might see a parent do something to or around their child, and then when the child has their own child they will try to do the opposite, and that grandchild will grow up doing nearly the exact same thing as their grandparent. This is because the grandparent was X roleplaying Y, causing the parent to be Y roleplaying X, causing the child to be X roleplaying Y, and so on. It is neat that homestuck, through it's scratch mechanic, shows both sides of this oscillation taking place, and at the same time shows both alternating generations getting along together, better as a whole, the cycle broken.
So I took the canon zodiac quiz for homestuck and here are my results: Gemini (gemga to be specific) with green blood (sylph class aka Virgo/Kanaya) Space aspect, and a derse dreamer. god even my results are chaos

Shame most people stop at act 1 thinking that it's all about preteens fucking around with confusing inventory systems and don't experience these mind-boggling complex, yet simple character dynamics and development
Ironically, some people try to act as the Sburb players (not just cosplay them) to avoid facing the reality that Homestuck is not meant to be realistic. (At least, I think they do. I hope they don't.)
Its implied in the Hiveswap Friendsims that Trolls' Last names/Caste names are given by Jadebloods. We dunno how they get their given names, but Scratch definitely doesn't care and Lusii can't talk, so the answer is Probably Still Jades. Maybe we'll find out for sure sometime.
Sorry this isn't related to the video, but I need help. I want to make a fan fiction and there are somethings I couldn't find any help online. 1). Where are the gates located, are all seven located above the player's house and where do they go? 2). Are there only four consort types or can there be more? (Salamanders, turtles, etc). 3). This one would affect my character. My title is Page of Heart and wanted to make my planet, Land of Gems and Fog. The quest would be to remove the fog (symbolising the reveling ones true self). The problem is I want to add monsters to the land representing fear, but I don't know if you can and have regular consorts. I know Sollax had floating brain creatures on his planet and Eridan had angels. Can you have both?
Cathie Upchurch 1) there are 7 gates above the players house, each one presenting a challenge to the player, the 7th one being a gate to the denizen. There are also return nodes located around the land that send the player back to their house, and other gates that allow the player to travel to other player’s lands. 2) all the consorts are supposed to be related/are amphibians; it’s supposed to allude to the frog as the great source of creation, or something like that. So yeah, loads of amphibious animals to use as consorts. I’ve even seen little dragons used like the nakodiles on Dave’s land. Lmao 3) id highly recommend lookin up Danhi’s Classpect guide for your character, as it gives a really good stipulation on what the challenges/obstacles are for the player to overcome. What you have doesn’t exactly sound like a page’s journey, but I really like the concept you have there; it’s a lot like the oil in John’s land being used by the denizen. As for the badguys, between the denizen and the black carapaces (aka the imps), that’s all that there really is as far as I’m aware. Keep in mind however that each session of sburb is unique to that universe, meaning there’s gonna be minor changes and discrepancies that you can write between to add those bad consorts in if you want. The fanadventure format allows you to play a little looser with the mechanics, given that we only /really/ see one complete, detailed sburb session (being the beta kids), while we only got snapshots of the troll’s main session, and the Alpha kid’s session was a void one
1: There are seven gates above the houses, and an undetermined number of gates on the planets that lead to other players houses and planets or back to your own house. The seventh and highest gate is high up enough to be nearly at Skaia itself. As for consorts, they appear to be mostly, but not universally, amphibious or reptilian life forms. I'm sure you could get away with having basically anything you want as consorts as long as it makes sense for the player's personal quest, but as far as I'm aware, we have no examples of planets with more than one kind of consort. Also, it probably shouldn't be frogs.
NJP695 thanks that does help. I wanted to have the fear thing because that is the thing that holds me back the most. From the fear of looking like an idiot or simply using the internet (believing I'll screw up and get a virus/Identity stolen). My quest us to except myself and not be controlled by fear as I help the consorts.
Sorry I’m a bit late but what you say is that a character can shift to a class that is not their opposite? I tought a thief would become a knight and a Sylph would become a prince if there’s a shift or perturbation in their lives
Okay so I had to stop at about 6 minutes cuz in the background, SOOO many spoilers were playing ;-; I know some of the major parts of the plot, but it doesn't hurt to get the deets, right? Anyways, love the vid, hate the spoilers.
Heya! I think your videos are. f r e a k i n g a w e s o m e But... I have a question... Can you look At undertale and deltarune to see if they are connected to this? I know toby fox helped with homestuck but uh... What if the universe's are connected!??!?!?!?
For future reference, "Noir" is pronounced with a strong R at the end. Kind of like this: Jack No-ARGH. Great video otherwise, it was just that your pronunciation of "Nor" irked me.
Just a knitpick. Dave and Karkat don't have a flushed relationship, their relationship is contextualized by both being knight classes, in their brotherhood in arms. Dave is a heterosexual.
hoo hoo hoo that's where you're wrong~ evidence for dave not being straight and having a bit of a crush on karkat: •He admits he really only joked about homosexuality to john and was overwhelmingly 'not gay' because of the toxic bro culture he was raised in. • Davepeta says that they don't feel conflicted about karkat, and is a bit surprised at that. • He asks Dirk how to come out of the closet. There's probably more to this argument, but that's what I remember.
That's an interesting interpretation. What do you think Dave was referring to here about telling his friends? www.homestuck.com/story/7922 And how do you interpret the conversation between John Dave and Karkat earlier when they reunited? Thanks! I love hearing different interpretations :)
@@a-bird-lover Davepeta is an amalgamation of Dave and Nepeta, and Nepeta is actively flushed for Karkat. Davepeta can't be used to argue for a homosexual Dave. Homoerotic humor is very alive in the military as a dynamic, though I couldn't tell you why. We're not a bunch of homosexuals, it's just funny to us to make jokes about gay shit. Dave outright responds to John's question by saying he isn't gay lol, and that if John thought he was gay, he wasn't paying attention to what he was talking about in his rant. I'd have to reread the other parts of the comic to have a context of them though.
@@ulups6688 I'm not completely certain, to be honest. I do know that both Dave and Karkat's arcs as characters don't work if they're in a romantic relationship. Especially Karkat. Karkat's relationship arc is in the pursuit of the mysterious "unknown" quadrant, which has clues for its nature rooted in both his Dancestor and his aspect. The Signless's knowledge of the unknown quadrant and Karkat's aspect are both rooted in blood, in the idea of "family," something completely foreign to the vast majority of, if not all of, the Troll species. The signless finds his "family" in his mother (the Dolarosa), and those he effectively adopts into his cult (if you wanna call it that) and their bonds are made through how they've saved one-another. Karkat's development is in being "bros" with Dave in a sense that goes beyond platonic friendship, and becomes a sense of a bond of "blood," of brothers in arms as knights, as kinsmen. Dave being there as somebody who has his best interests in mind, and Karkat being there as a stand-in for the warmth of brotherhood that Bro/Dirk could never offer him. Trying to make Dave and Karkat gay for each other just ruins the entire buildup of the character, arc, and Hussie isn't that lazy of a writer, he's too competent for it to be a matter of shipping. I wouldn't be surprised if he wrote in a few red herrings to fuck with us though. Dave's character arc is coming from a starting point of constant failure as a knight (because everybody around him is dying, including himself from other timelines, and Bro stepping in does more to protect people than he can) and how that leads to him largely trying to feign disassociation as a defense mechanism, to a gradual development of security in his ability to defend others as a knight and their ability to stay alive as a whole, allowing him to bond with people without risking a deep loss. He can open up and be earnest about what he thinks about a situation without having to layer it in irony anymore, and he starts asking the deep and dark questions about the nature of his attachments, and he can finally be comfortable with it. In fact, I bet he's asking Dirk (in regards to your question from before) about how to be open about how he feels without having to hide anything anymore. Dave as a character is a broken person who's trying to hide it for the majority of the story, with varying degrees of coping and success, and a few obsessions with death to follow suit. His relationship with Karkat is squarely rooted in a sense of safety and security, as opposed to the constant paranoia that Bro/Dirk put him through, and so the actual familial dynamic works perfectly.
@@psychicnecrosis8376 Thanks for the reply! I just wrote out a pretty huge response and highlighted it to copy it but Im on a phone and ended up deleting it instead RIP. But basically, I can see Karkat's brotherhood motif with Jack and Eridan. I thought of the quadrant beyond as being what the sufferer had with the disciple, mirrored ny Karkat admitting that he wants Terezi in every quadrant when outwardly he worships the quadrant system. This could mirror Dave similarly refining his warrior's code by rejecting the notion that masculinity is opposed to homosexuality. Thus, a romantic omni-quadrant pairing for them could make sense under thst arc. But regardless of the nature of thejr relationship, as you mentioned, the most important consequence is that their relationship helped them both learn how to open up to other people and overcome their issues. Thanks again for the opportunity to see It with a new lens! It never ceases to amaze me how complex and how much room for discussion there is about Homestuck when it began as just a pretty silly webcomic :)

That blury kris png killed me
Brilliant as always :)
alpha dave as prince of time and beta bro as knight of heart??? what this is literally sos fascinating
I still understand nothing
Can you do more videos on hiveswap friendsim characters?
Ironically, some people try to act as the Sburb players (not just cosplay them) to avoid facing the reality that Homestuck is not meant to be realistic. (At least, I think they do. I hope they don't.)
Both John and johns dad dated roxy

Your pronunciation of Noir hurts me
Now-are
@@izzrainy7410 in the ballad of Jack Noir, Toby pronounces it as No-Are
This guy pronounces it as nore
Eh. It's a french word, I'm a french person, didn't feel that bad honestly. Just like someone who pronounces it with a little bit of an accent.
Speaking on lusii, are they the ones who name the trolls? For someone reason i always thought it was doc scratch

Lmao
3) id highly recommend lookin up Danhi’s Classpect guide for your character, as it gives a really good stipulation on what the challenges/obstacles are for the player to overcome.
Hope that helps! Contact me if you have any further questions, I’m kinda in the middle of structuring my own fan adventure too!
ScttDynamite220 thanks
Man I really wasn't paying attention while reading
Sorry I’m a bit late but what you say is that a character can shift to a class that is not their opposite? I tought a thief would become a knight and a Sylph would become a prince if there’s a shift or perturbation in their lives
oh okay that’s because they shift with the class of their ancestors I get it now

For future reference, "Noir" is pronounced with a strong R at the end. Kind of like this: Jack No-ARGH.
Great video otherwise, it was just that your pronunciation of "Nor" irked me.

What the fuck are you saying!? This subculture don't make any sense!?! How can I understand this!?! Ahhhhhh!!!
Just a knitpick.
Dave and Karkat don't have a flushed relationship, their relationship is contextualized by both being knight classes, in their brotherhood in arms. Dave is a heterosexual.
hoo hoo hoo that's where you're wrong~
evidence for dave not being straight and having a bit of a crush on karkat:
•He admits he really only joked about homosexuality to john and was overwhelmingly 'not gay' because of the toxic bro culture he was raised in.
• Davepeta says that they don't feel conflicted about karkat, and is a bit surprised at that.
• He asks Dirk how to come out of the closet.
There's probably more to this argument, but that's what I remember.
That's an interesting interpretation. What do you think Dave was referring to here about telling his friends? www.homestuck.com/story/7922
And how do you interpret the conversation between John Dave and Karkat earlier when they reunited?
