  • Six months after elected president Pedro Castillo was ousted, resistance continues in Peru. On June 16, president Castillo’s lawyer, Guido Leonardo Croxatto will join us for a discussion about lawfare, repression and the ongoing resistance. We will also hear updates from the ground and delve into Canada’s role in these events, including its sale of weapons to Peru and its large mining presence.
    BACKGROUND
Security forces shot hundreds and killed sixty, mostly indigenous, protesters following Castillo’s ouster. Ottawa immediately backed the ouster and Canada’s ambassador to Peru, Louis Marcotte worked to shore up support for Dina Boluarte’s replacement government. Many countries in the region have rejected Boluarte.
