IMPORTANT! What you are seeing is intense ground shaking equivalent to X-XII on the Mercalli Scale. In most cases, quakes look that strong ONLY if it is major shallow depth quake (M6.8 or higher) and ONLY close to the fault rupture area.
I’d love to know more about what facets of structural engineering types are accounted for in these simulations. Specifically, I’m not sure the super-tall tube-structures are modeled quite right. Such structures are designed to accommodate massive lateral loads and are built with tuned dampening as a core condition of managing lateral (and transverse) oscillations. As an example, I’d expect the failure mode for the Sears Tower and Burj Dubai models, to be centered around a foundational failure due to the localized lateral acceleration, e.g, piling and column collapses at and below ground level. I don’t think you’d see much movement through the superstructure initially, instead you’d see the whole building come down, starting from the ground floors, once lateral movement at ground level initiated a foundational failure. In the case of the Sears and Burj, I think this is particularly true, as you’d have sheering forces acting against the pilings that are driven into bedrock, with both being surrounded by surface level material that’s subject to liquefaction and very different levels of wave propagation. That said, I could be completely wrong (and I certainly hope there’s never a real-world test of either buildings structural resilience under such conditions). Also, I do enjoy these videos.
thank you so much for your detailed feedback! I totally agree with everything you say! The foundation pillars would fail first in tall structures because that's where the acting forces are highest. My simulations are still a work in progress and for now they are amazing food for thought for anyone interested in this topic :) where are you from?
@@EarthquakeSim Hello - I’m from NYC. A place where I hope we never experience what you simulate! (Note: your brick and wood frame structures seem to fail very realistically, something that would be a very big problem around here!)
Each time a building shakes and falls, i always imagine people screaming for help and running down the stairs to go outside, as it goes higher, they didnt survive
