      Tech Legend So I ordered than fan, separately to replace my old brown fan, and the 4 screws it came with are too small. Hmm. My original screws are silver and quite jarring to look at. I feel like Noctua overlooked this and should have provided black hardware to replace the original.

    If you install the heatsink vertically rather than horizontally you get a major difference in thermals since heat rises. I have one of these smacked on an i7 9700k on an aorus z390 mtx, inside of an nr200p (sfx) case with a 2070s ftw3 ultra right below it. I do leave the case open for more airflow, but it will do just fine with the side panel on as well. When playing games like Tarkov and such, the cpu temps will occasionally spike to 86c. Before, when it was installed horizontally the same as yours, it would occasionally bump to 93c. Given today's build quality, it didn't bother me too much, but I obviously noticed a major difference when changing the positioning.

    • @TechLegend-com
      @TechLegend-com  3 года назад +1

      True, but it also depends on your system configuration. How many fans there are, and how they are installed. I'd say that with these type of CPU coolers, each user has to do some trial and error to get the best performance possible.

    Excellent video. Liked and subscribed. I'll be getting this for my i5 8600k although I do want to upgrade to a lower TDP cpu like an 8700 or 9700 (non k). I am curious to what thermal paste method you used eg a pea size blob or evenly spread or a X shape as this is much debated.

    • @TechLegend-com
      @TechLegend-com  4 года назад

      Hi James, I am using the pea size blob method, and it has never failed me. In my opinion, leaving the pressure of the cooler to spread the thermal paste is the best, as it removes any chance of trapped air or uneven spread.

      I've installed this into my Asus ROG strix z370i (mini itx for those of you new to the game). What a pain to install! You have to line the screws up screw them in so they just come through the board, apply the paste, hold the fan from one side then screw the screws in whilst holding it together! I had to do this whilst the power and reset buttons were in too cause they're a pain to put in(why they're not just one cable or adapter these days I'm not sure, what a rediculous old standard). This was much more difficult to install than the corsair aio H75 that I used to have in there (in push pull) but boy does it look good and I have more space in the case (corsair Carbide air 240). I left it 20 mins and have now powered it on. I have 2 less fans in the case now and it's quieter. I'll do temp checks in 20 mins! Just watching a video TV episode on this PC to make sure there's no problems!

    • @TechLegend-com
      @TechLegend-com  4 года назад

      @@JamesNHurling1 Thanks for the quick update James, but you shouldn't have had any trouble with the installation process. You remove the fan from the heatsink, then have the heatsink installed over the CPU and afterwards you install the fan.

    I'm building a SFF pc. I'm thinking about using a Noctua L12S on the i9 9900KF in a Nouvolo Steck case (similar to the ghost s1) Do you think that would cool it sufficiently? I do video editing so not really gaming at all :)

    • @TechLegend-com
      @TechLegend-com  4 года назад

      It will cool but you can't expect to not hear the fans spinning. The Noctua L12S is better and the S variant has slightly more surface area for dissipating the heat. So you should be good, but you need to watch the temperatures and see if you get enough airflow inside the system.

      It is a downdraft fan, I believe, to cool the VRM with heat drawn from outside in its intended small form factor case with limited case airflow. An adjustable foam duct is available to improve this and prevent heat from being drawn in from the case; Noctua also uploaded the design to Printables for those with 3D printers.
