Great video! Would like to add just a few things if I may.The battery clips are sharp and can cut the thin wrap on the outside of the batteries causing a short. This will burst the batteries if not caught in time. And even with the batteries out of the unit the capacitors still hold a charge unless shorted out with something with a INSULATED handle. And last they did make a gm tube with a lower sensitivity by a factor of 10. Fur use in more contaminated areas but you will pay for them now. :)
@The99REBEL Yes, I have a lot of uranium and it detects it very easily. It's best to have the slide/window open as uranium and a number of it's decay products give off beta radiation or a weak gamma ray.
@thecooldude9999 It's a survey meter. There are many types of survey meters. "Geiger" refers to the type of detector employed by this instrument. Some survey instruments have scintillation detectors, others ionization chambers, and others Geiger Mueller (GM) detectors.
Nice demonstration! Gotta love the old CD V-700s! I have a Victoreen model 6A, and it works great! It's calibrated, too! I'd love to get a Ludlum too, probably a model 12, but unfortunately they're a little too pricey for me . . .
you can make any of these CD Geiger counters sense alpha radiation if you replace the sensor.... but you need a repair skill of about 45...... and a sensor module.... and some scrap electronics
Looks just like mine (CDV-700 6B) and the Serial Number is 38,000 higher than yours. My test strip peaked at 2.5 to 3.0 and the Headphone works. May have to return to the Trinity Site with this "New" old instrument . Has a Cal. sticker from July '92... Thank you for the video ! tjl
I have a cdv-700 anton no.6 and I got a rock stuck in the shield so I open it and the tube was stuck inside the top part I think they glued it to the gasket I don't know if you know about this can you reply
Are you not able to get everything back together and working again? Parts for these instruments are pretty easy to find on eBay if you needed to buy another tube or gasket.
I got one from eBay. Seller said it worked. My counter pegs out as soon as I turn it on and pegs faster in the x10 and x1 positions. What does this means. Is the tube broken?
just received one today. powered it up and just get a steady buzz in the speaker and the needle pegs to the right and stays there. any idea what might be wrong? thanks.
You shouldn't open it up and you shouldn't sleep with it right next to you, but other than that it is very safe. It is very weak - about the same as some minerals.
Maybe try putting a piece of duct tape over it to contain any of the stuff that is likely flaking off. I've seen them do that before and the little piece of metal under the foil (the source) is breaking apart. The tape will help contain everything and make it so you can still use the check source.
Just don't eat it :) It would not be possible to get radiation sickness from the check source on the side of the instrument. Most of the check sources, under the little foil sticker on the side, are either radium or depleted uranium. The amount of material there is not enough to pose an external hazard. You can get a little more info on the check sources here www.orau.org/ptp/collection/civildefense/checksources.htm
I just bought a CD V-777-1 Kit in the original box with this instrument in it for $70. I can't wait to play with it.
One of the, if not the, best CD v-700 videos on the net!!!
Bravo!!!

I just bought a refurbished Victoreen 6A and watching your video makes it even harder for me to wait for it to arrive. =)
Good job!!!
Survey meter is a general term. Geiger counters are a type of survey meter. The other type uses an ionization chamber to detect radioactive particles.
@The99REBEL Yes, I have a lot of uranium and it detects it very easily. It's best to have the slide/window open as uranium and a number of it's decay products give off beta radiation or a weak gamma ray.
I had to calibrate one I got recently from a thrift find, unit functions pretty well, but needs a new GM tube
I just bought one of these, and a 715 just in case there's a nuclear war. Great video.

I got one of these it’s pretty sweet it’s got some test material on the side
Just won one of these on ebay. Thanks for the clear instruction.
I own this unit. Thanks for the information.
Best of luck

I bought my unit, "Melwyn", which is a CDV700 6A from Victoreen, from eBay from a refurbisher
please answer this question asap can i use this to find uranium samples?
Damn good video!
Same here. lol. ETIING MEH KID DIS FRIDAY. where did you get yours?
@AtomicTRG thank you very much i am getting one and just wanted to know , Thank you very much! and great video i thumbsed up and subscribed!

@@_TRG_208 Yeah okay will do I used to have 2 anton no.5s I know how hard it is to find parts but will do
@@_TRG_208 I fixed the problem thank you for helping
not a survey meter, its a Geiger counter, a survey meter is a 710 for example.
I got one from eBay. Seller said it worked.
My counter pegs out as soon as I turn it on and pegs faster in the x10 and x1 positions.
What does this means.
Is the tube broken?
Yeah, that sounds like the tube is burnt out.
Also if a unit does contain radium or uranium under the NRC do you have to have a permit to buy or sell it??
C C nope.
just received one today. powered it up and just get a steady buzz in the speaker and the needle pegs to the right and stays there. any idea what might be wrong? thanks.
It could be any number of things. You could have a bad probe, short in the cable, or the electronics in the instrument could be bad.
Thanks!
I don't have the hearphone for the CDV 700: can I use normal hearphone with a piece of scotch?????????? please help me!!!!!!!!!!!
You can buy screw on speakers on eBay that will go on the spot we’re it says “phone”. It will click like usual when it detects something
is the check source harmful or no ?
You shouldn't open it up and you shouldn't sleep with it right next to you, but other than that it is very safe. It is very weak - about the same as some minerals.
Those clicks scared the shit out of me
What if the sticker is in deterioration and the source is exposed ?
Maybe try putting a piece of duct tape over it to contain any of the stuff that is likely flaking off. I've seen them do that before and the little piece of metal under the foil (the source) is breaking apart. The tape will help contain everything and make it so you can still use the check source.
Has anyone ever reported getting sick from a check source off any of these units or others just wondering

AtomicTRG very interesting thanks
You can buy them on eBay
