Originally Reese Witherspoon was going to be the wife but she pulled out because she felt like she couldn't pull it off. Rosamund Pike did a fantastic job and had fantastic chemistry with Ben Affleck.
She bought the rights with the intention of doing it herself, but dropped out because Fincher said she was wrong for the part. She is still on as producer. Her name is in the credits at the beginning
Rosamund said she actually had to go practice with cadavers for that slash scene with Patrick to make it look as realistic as possible. I love her acting so much and she just killed it again in “I care a lot”.
Yeah she didn’t pull out, every actress in Hollywood wanted that part but as usual Fincher was right about who to cast. He even pulled a killer performance out of Tyler Perry.
An interesting idea is that Amy was more enraged by Nick not trying anymore, not putting in the effort he put in to win her in the first place and making her and her life boring and domesticated - the anger at the infidelity and the knowledge that he was planning on leaving her were just the last straw. A great psycho character haha
The whole point of the book, and the movie, was that people pretend to be what they think their partner wants them to be and end up resenting having to be that person. They also resent their partner for not being what they want them to be, which they can never be because their partner is also pretending to be something they are not. It is an examination of relationships shown through Nick and Amy with some heavy exaggeration for effect.
@@MrMeddyman Actually, only about 30% of marriages currently end in divorce, and the rate has been dropping for decades. Even at it's peak the divorce rate never got above 40%, the whole "50% of marriages end in divorce" statistic is due to oversimplified maths that doesn't yield accurate data. Of course, that's not to say there aren't plenty of fucked up, doomed relationships, but luckily it's not as dire as many people think. 😁

She literally even went on a monologue in her head as the narrating voice in the movie explaining how Nick made her feel and how this filled her with increasing resentment and rage over the years of their marriage. I didn't read the book but heard a theory on a podcast and found it interesting. Her parents knew about their daughter's sociopathy, besides both being psychologists, Amy from the books always makes good and educational decisions, and if this was a way the parents found to educate and limit their daughter's actions when she was still a child.
Nick is worried about Amy killing him, but the big reason he stays is the fear of her turning their kid against him. He grew up with a terrible father and feels strongly he can't do that to a kid.
Bro I got Gone Girled in 2015... Cam home from work to an empty house, kids gone and a letter on the kitchen table saying she didn't hae to tell me where she was. I think they stayed together. I think he had some growing up to do, shown by the scene where he lost his men's magazine job and fell back on her trust fund. Then, he cheated, which pushed her over the edge. Her framing the men in her life was her way of being seen as victim, and expressing the hidden hurt made by her parents loving her image rather than her. Tyler Perry caught on by pointing out they can make a movie, expand The Bar, and become a low-tier celebrity couple, which was solidified by her pregnancy. I think there was a little hint at the end that Affleck's character did have a hidden violence, but maybe he was truly terrified of being murdered at any point. It's funny at the end where he says, "You killed a guy!", reminding me when he was playing Battlefield, "Just killing some folks." "You two are the most f***ed up people I've ever met."
Honestly Nick was pushed to greater extremes mentally than anyone can generally take. So I really dont blame him for getting physical with Amy at the end. It's not natural to him though. It is to her.
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are reminding me of these guys as they make bids for celebrity by trashing their families and almost fetishizing their marriage. I suspect the underlying story is also pretty awful.
Lol what? She doesn't fear him. Look at the stare she gives him at the end. Dominant. Completely in control. lol the editing during the Doogie Death was a nice touch EDIT: stroke of genius in this film-- the bookend shots of Amy at the very beginning and at the very end. The first one looking scared, the second one looking more vague and ominous. If you look back at it and compare them side to side, they're different takes with the actress making subtle changes in her performance because of how Nick's perception of her has changed.
Some of my favorites that would be fun to watch people watch: Mulholland Drive, Melancholia, Eyes Wide Shut, 2001: A Space Odyssey, The Talented Mr. Ripley, Dancer in the Dark, Eve's Bayou, All About Eve, His Girl Friday, Bringing Up Baby, Wait Until Dark, The Women
The beauty of the movie is showing how prespectives can be changed, with some helpful elements. Nick was seen as perfect husband, it changed it a monster. While Amy was a monster and become perfect wife. Every element push that narrative story making people belive in what they want to belive. Like the comment about twin sister been weirdly close. In the eyes of that person, Nick was already a monster that she used every thing that she considered weird. She didnt considered that they could be just closed brothers, instead she saw romantic affection (also the stigma that girl and boy cannot be just friends) and that believe made other people sharing the same idea. we could see the man behind Nick comment about Twincest, like is something common. Also goes for fetiche idea. Several people have this fetiche of twincest and since is social condemn, those people represed and project in others. Without been polemic, but the same happen with Prince Charles and Diana. In the end he become the monster (public vision) and Diana a saint (public believe and desire). The last scene is very scary, because Nick with his flaws is trapped in a marriage he doesnt want, and every possible move can put him in danger. This really tie very well in domestic violence (doesnt matter the gender of the victim) where the victim walks in a floor of glass. The movie touches so many social commentary that goes behind just Amy been a psycho. Even her monologue explains how women are seein in society. Rosamund Pike was amazing actress, making us hating and yet loving Amy. Rosamund is one of the few actress that know how to make us believe in her roles. Since 007 Die another day, we could see some glimpses of her potencial... She have a few roles similar to amy. And Ben, probably his best performance...
It lays down a primer of Scott/ Lacy Peterson & Nancy Grace and just rockets to darkness. The next step for them: a reality show on TLC of course. They're already media stars, the world watches them raise their kids. Then season 3.... the crew pick up some curious audio when they think the mics are off. Affleck accidentally kills someone trying to retrieve the audio & protect his family. The audio gets out anyway, new questions come up about her "kidnapping" and the nature of the crew member death.
Great movie. The book was inspired by the Lacy and Scott Peterson murder case. Also there’s a great line from a TV show where a character says “There’s a sequel to The Bible but not one to Gone Girl?”. Always made me laugh.
Y'all should watch "My friend Dahmer" one day, Its a movie about when Jeffery Dahmer was a kid right before he started killing and the movie was made by someone who went to school with him.
This movie must have made my jaw hit the floor a few times. This woman was absolutely diabolical and crazy af. I don't think much of Ben's acting, but this was definitely some good acting on his part too. I need to see his Way back movie. That may be his greatest acting yet, because he can relate the subject matter.
I want a sequel where they have a kid; he’s been faking it, and Amy knows but appreciates the effort. But like someone planning a prison escape, he looks for the opportunity to make her demise look like an unquestionable accident, like falling off a cliff or something. Then, he’s finally free.
In the scene at the Airport in New York, Affleck was supposed to wear a Yankees cap. As a die-hard Red Sox fan he refused. The compromise was the Mets cap Affleck wears in the movie.
You guys should watch "True Romance" True Romance is a 1993 American romantic crime film directed by Tony Scott and written by Quentin Tarantino. That “wood” joke….SIR….👏👏👏👏
The best movie with Rosamund Pike in it is called
I Care Alot
Incredible movie
lol the editing during the Doogie Death was a nice touch
EDIT: stroke of genius in this film-- the bookend shots of Amy at the very beginning and at the very end.
@ 2:38 - LOL, I'll be able to use that one next year.
This channel getting better and better, keep up the good work
Appreciate it!
@@YouMeTheMovies My pleasure
Dam! She set em up! Because the girl and guy said!
I sometimes forget that Rosamund Pike is British, because her American accent is so good.
This movie gave me so much anxiety and made me not trust people even more. Such a good story/ plot.
@John Holms you know men can be psychopaths as well right.
That part when she says “you befriend the local IDIOT” she has a lot of bass in her voice
This channel is like crib notes for movies.. It actually helps to have a movie broken down in 30mns
The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo is even better imo (the David Fincher version obvs)
Such a good mystery/thriller/suspense
If you want to complete the Affleck duology of movies that start with Gone, I highly recommend Gone Baby Gone. Probably his best imo.
Make it look like the kid accidentally put the car in drive and the car ran over her...
In the scene at the Airport in New York, Affleck was supposed to wear a Yankees cap. As a die-hard Red Sox fan he refused. The compromise was the Mets cap Affleck wears in the movie.
Interesting fact. Part of this movie was filmed in a city right next to me. Cape Girardeau Missouri.
It’s so weird seeing the bill emerson bridge in a movie. I’ve gotta drive across that bridge in the morning lol
you guys should react to the show Sharp Objects! it’s based off the book that’s also written by Gillian Flynn, who wrote gone girl.
it only has 8 episodes too!
RUclips is helping spell this words! Thank you! RUclips!
The weirdest movie about how we treat each other.
I gotta go with Jersey Girl for my favorite Affleck performance.
This movie is a mirror of what some marriages are.
You guys should watch "True Romance"
True Romance is a 1993 American romantic crime film directed by Tony Scott and written by Quentin Tarantino. It features an ensemble cast led by Christian Slater and Patricia Arquette, with Dennis Hopper, Val Kilmer, Gary Oldman, Brad Pitt, and Christopher Walken in supporting roles. Slater and Arquette portray newlyweds on the run from the Mafia after stealing a shipment of drugs.
What a coincidence, we just watched this with my friends on one of our movie days
The Mrs. reaction to marriage was priceless 🤣.. It's funny cuz you guys are fantastic together
11:04 you've watched The Leftovers?!? 😍 I've got hear your take one day!
Oooh please do David Fincher's The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. And just for more crime/thrillers in general "The Bone Collector" too. :)
EDIT : Also the miniseries "Sharp Objects"
Watch the original movies instead, way better and there are three of them
@@bepkororoti8019 I have....and I love Fincher's version.
Zodiac and Fight Club! We need both of those reactions on this channel A$AP! Both films are Masterpieces and both directed by David Fincher.
We will get to Zodiac, she already knows a lot about that tho, as she's listened to a ton of podcasts on the Zodiac killer. Sadly, she's seen Fight Club already so no reaction for that one :(
@@YouMeTheMovies That's okay, I hope she enjoyed Fight Club! And can't wait for Zodiac, guys you are seriously the best! Really enjoy your reactions! Keep up the great work.
“I say we take off, and nuke the whole site from orbit. It’s the only way to be sure.”
That quote fits so many movies.
Pacific Heights is a great underrated 1990's psychological thriller that you may enjoy.
Cat would definitely not give a damn either way
“Oooh good for him“ lol
lol she wasn't impressed with the fifth anniversary wood joke
She was that day...
"You befriend a local IDIOT" always makes me laugh.
Rosamund Pike was good in Jack Reacher as well.
Watchmen and now Gone Girl? We're on a roll. Definitely check out Zodiac and The Game at some point. Two underrated Fincher movies.
I'm only 2 minutes in to this video, and her reaction to the 'cracking her head open' and the 'wtf', gurl, you got a big storm coming. laughing my ass off.
you guys should react to "sharp objects" its a limited hbo series (8 episodes) from the same author of gone girl!!! its mindblowing and soooooo good.
It didn't impress me much. I loved the book, but something just didn't click with the sries. Maybe if I didn't read he book first. Maybe I'll try again.
How Amy Adams didn't win an Emmy for her performance in that series I'll never know.
