  • How a US-China Chip War Benefits India | Between the Lines with Palki Sharma
The US and China are fighting a war, a war for supremacy in the world of technology. This war between Beijing and Washington centers around semiconductors or chips. They are at the heart of a tech 'cold war' between Beijing and Washington that is only growing in intensity. But what role does India play in this? New Delhi is pushing itself as an alternative to China's chips by trying to establish itself as a semiconductor manufacturing hub. How will India achieve this? Palki Sharma tells you on Between the Lines.

Palki never talked about one important thing. The US is spending tens of billions USD to help their companies to produce more chips, India is also joining the fray too, and China is trying hard to increase its chip production. So is Germany and other European nations. Everyone is trying to produce more chip. But who will buy the chips? The biggest chip consumer right now is China, they absorb most of the global chips. Their market is so important. With their massive push to be self reliance, they will be able to get most of their matured chips themselves. (They still can't produce the most advance chips, but that is just about 5% of the total chips, used mostly in mobile phones.)... I am worried that there will be a glut, and China will be able to buy chip so cheaply, and many chip producers will go belly up..

Semiconductor manufacturing, as an engineering student from ECE department I would say the present world is electrical enough for us to control it and all thanks to a SIMPLE yet basic device called a DIODE, which is an extrinsic semiconductor( which is Silicon basically added with impurities called dopant to form P and N type thus even labelled PN junction diode. )
This diode is the only reason we could control the current as in simple meaning it acts as a switch and through which transistor is also derived from. Thus semiconductor play some very crucial role, hence controlling semiconductor manufacturing would result in direct controlling of the entire electronics and leading to monopoly when there's a controlled production.

@@ej8365 That is just one of the problem India faces. Semiconductor industry is also a power-hungry industry, it needs a lot of electrical power to run fabrication plant, in Taiwan currently 8% of Taiwan's electrical power goes directly to semiconductor industry, it is forecasted in coming years that number will easily double to 12% or more, the electricity supply in Taiwan now become a bottleneck, increase cost of oil and gas and shortage of local supply on those means an increase in cost for semiconductor industry. Putting down a few billion dollars is only the beginning but India also need to build up its infrastructure like increase electricity generation, better transport system, better logistics, better work ethic amongst its work force. Yes, I know the likes of Wendi Payne might call me China bot, but the truth is Taiwanese companies do not view Indian workers in India as having the same work ethic and dedication as the Chinese workers, there are also high level corruption and trump up laws that steal and rob foreign investors their profit made in India as well as their tech know how.

It is a good ambition for India but it is not as obvious a decision as it sounds. It is like trying to jump straight to the end goal with out achieving any of the intermediary steps along the way.
$3 billion does not even qualify as a 'starting fee' for the Chip industry. A single full mfg plant costs more than this. The semiconductor industry is very expensive and very automated. India wants to grow its GDP, but if it chooses semiconductors it will have to dedicate an enormous amount of its eggs into that basket. These eggs then can't be used on other necessary projects that would create many many more mid-paying jobs. The semiconductor manufacturing route actually creates stunningly few jobs relative to the $$ put in because nearly everything imaginable is automated. Other than a few people servicing the tool and a handful in the control center, you could turn the lights of in a semiconductor plant off and let the building run itself (and that day is probably coming sooner than later) . Design creates even fewer but even higher paying jobs.
With India's population, if it spends all of its money to create very high paying jobs for very few Indians it may create many new problems for India.

Speaking about the train crash in Orissa - Palki Sharma was fuming and fretting when a German magazine “Der Spiegel” depicted Indian train as over crowded and rackety in a cartoon of theirs showing comparison between China and India where later was shown as backward. See for yourself the condition of Indian railways now and also the rescue effort which is slow and ineffective. Where is she now ? Total silence as she moved on to another irrelevant topic of hers.

A few chip manufacturers have indeed set up factories in India for chip assembly and were forced to close shop and relocate back in China due to very low productivity levels of Indian labour about one tenth that of Chinese productivity.I am not an industrial engineer and so do not know if productivity could actually be increased. My own experience in the manufacturing industry confirms the low productivity of Indian labour.

Please cover the inflation in PC components!! 🙏 If I had to build my computer 1.3lakhs(2019) today i would have to pay around 2.2-2.5 lakhs. We can continue to pursue semiconductor manufacturing but we should also bolster GOI's PLI Scheme and invite companies like Asrock, Asus, BenQ, BeQuite, CoolerMaster, Corsair, Deepcool, EVGA, Fractal Design, G.Skillz, Gigabyte, Logitech, MSI, NZXT, Phanteks, SaphireTechnology, Seagate, Thermaltake, Viewsonic, WesternDigital, Zotac etc. to manufacture PC components like motherboards, power supplies, high refresh rate monitors, PC cabinets, Air and Liquid coolers, ram modules, storage devices, VR gear, WiFi 6 & 7 networking devices, keyboards, mice, headsets etc. locally. Global Times was quick to report, "Apple faces lack of manpower after moving to India", this reverse/alternate speak is a great advertisement to the brands mentioned above. 😎
