Amazing, how those guys back then fought bare-knuckel, outside on the dirt, at over 100 degree heat, for 75 consecutive rounds. What does guys were made of? Unbelievable! Men, what a stamina those guys had. They will put to shame, any boxer today. Those guys had BALLS of STEEL!

Actually, that's untrue. I can, in fact, confirm that John L Sullivan did have a surviving descendant- I forget his first name, but his last name was Vogel. My grandmother was the child of Mr. Vogel and a woman named Lydia Lamont. Unfortunately, he was not the greatest of fathers. He was incredibly abusive towards his wife and 4 kids- of which my grandmother was the second to youngest. Mr. Vogel ended up going to a psych ward, where he received electroshock therapy and, consequentially, forgot his entire family. My grandmother caught wind that he was out about a year after he was released from the institution. She tracked him down to confront him for abandoning them, only to find that he didn't remember them at all, and had already started another family. All that being said- gollum here and I may actually be distantly related 0-0

Why would there be no head movement? I'm sure boxers now, in ancient Rome and Greece, as well as in Sullivan's day, would make a real point to move their head. There's no video for you to make that comment. Lots of different rules back then...no gloves to protect from cuts, broken hands, endless rounds in unpredictable outdoor (100 degrees in Mississippi in July) situations.
@BeetsbyDwight under modern rules that do not allow throws maybe but under London prize ring rules or even in a street fight they would have a chance against todays boxers
Ketchel was actually killed by Walter Dipley, a ranch hand working under the assumed name of Kurtz. Ketchel was training at his friend’s ranch for a desired rematch with Johnson. The day prior to his murder, the boxer had berated the ranch hand for treating a horse cruelly. Dipley and cook Goldie Smith, his purported wife, planned to rob the boxer in retaliation. She set Ketchel up with his back to the door at breakfast, and Dipley shot him through his shoulder and lung with a .22. (Wikipedia)
Your point is well taken. However the tape does not lie. No foot work, hands down by their side, pawing punches, inability to know how to cut off the ring,no head movement on how to slip a punch, etc. etc. Many of the rounds are just awkwardly moving around eye balling each other. Their punch count per round is about 10 times less than a modern day fighter would throw.
By the way, for all those talking about Johnson being ducked. You should remember that he was held to a draw by Philadelphia Jack O'Brian, despite outweighing him by 43 pounds. Many people there thought O'Brian should have been awarded the verdict.
Jack was hurt, jack o Brian was defeated by Langford who Johnson defeated. Jefferies's prejudice is why he didn't fight johnson the first time as opposed to refereeing a bout between two puffed up middles.

Bob Fitzsimmons did not duck Black fighters. He fought whomever he was matched against and at his peak and in his own time he was pretty ferocious hitter. When in his forties and way past his best he was knocked out by Jack Johnson who I am sure would have done the same thing albeit taken a bit longer, had he fought Bob at their respective bests.
