It's only as strong as the screws used to install. Also a way to lock yourself out by "accident" . I lived in Barrow, Alaska where our doors had to be polar bear proof. Our door had heavy steel hangers holding a 4 x 6 beam and no heavy boot nor polar bear is coming in.
Plus don't the doors open outward in Alaska?

I agree. I was thinking that a steel door frame, steel door and a good dead bolt would be much more secure. A good boot would just pull it out of the wooden frame. Plus, it looks like it might be easy to lock yourself out.
Nice idea, but you may as well have used glue to put it together, as those welds are very weak. Just tapping the rod like that gets no penetration and will break off quite easily. Also, it needs to have a lock-off system, so that you can still get in when you come home.
trust me, the cheap wooden door frame or those weak ass drywall screws he used are gona give out long before those bad welds ever would
I'm not a welder but I've used a stick welder before and I've not seen that "tapping" technique before - perhaps just to tack something before actually welding.
The video is sped up. He's holding it on there longer than it seems in the video. I think his rods are just too much for the thickness of metal so he's using that technique to avoid overheating the metal. The end result would be much stronger than the screws holding it to the door frame.
@@Mikej1592 It looks like European doors and door frame that are metal. They build more solidly there. Electrical wiring is run and then cementedstuccoed over. If there's a problem, they chisel it out. I saw an addition being built using cinder block, brick, and big rocks(whatever was available). After the walls are up, they make it all nice with stucco. This was in the Czech Republic but in Italy I saw the frame of a house made of rebar and concrete rather than wood 2x4 and such. Interesting seeing the differences.
The "lock-off system", as demonstrated, is simply to leave the latch flipped up. The weakness in that system is that enough vibration, say, from a tractor-trailer rig going by down the street, could cause the latch to flip down, locking you out. The fix would be another catch that would hold the pivoting latch in the up position. Even a magnet on the door jamb might work.
I have one of these on my backyard gate, I bought it at the hardware store about 10 years ago for about $4. Looks like a pound of steel held on with a few flimsy screws.

ajajaja muy buena, igual de acuerdo a como lo puso , yo le pego una o dos patadas y esa puerta sale volando, ya me paso en csa que me cerraran y perdieron la llave y tuve que volar la puerta de una patada, asi que si es muy posible entrar
Hay un fallo gordo y evidente, tipico de estos sistemas: los anclajes!
El sistema lo aguantará todo, pero al estar anclado a la madera y con una base muy pequeña, esta se astillará y se romperá. El sistema sobrevivirá a la destrucción de puerta y/o marco y el ladrón podrá llevarselo para montarlo en su puerta!
Aún así, la idea es buena y está muy bien realizada. 👏👏👏
Bueno el video y la idea, me surgen 2 preguntas: dimensiones de las platinas y distancia de las perforaciones.
La segunda es: una vez salga y se cierre la puerta como vuelvo a entrar si no hay forma de abrir desde afuera? Será dejar a alguien adentro para que me abra.

The idea is great, there are several issues with it: once you leave the house, you're locked out unless someone is inside the house, the mechanism is not conveniently located, I can see a huge headache or a pocked eye, last the door and the door frame are very weak you have two screws on the very edge of the door and the frame is thin, best option is security is a concern would be to mount the frame mechanism to the wall with bolts not screws, and the door mount a plate (double plate) one outside and one inside the door where the door mechanism would be attached to, very hard to break in this way. Like I said, the idea is brilliant, just a few work around. An idea just pocked, why not make the wall mechanism move left to right (sideways) that way you can move it out of the door latch and move it back in place when you're home.

@@Crustymarine Indeed, I use "long throw" dead bolts ... and the (heavy duty) striker plate is installed with 4" screws that pass through the door frame and fully engage the wall studs that surround the door. These locks thwarted a burglar who was able to make a sustained effort to enter our home. (He eventually broke a smallish glass window -- but then discovered the deadbolts were keyed from the inside (as well as the outside), so he couldn't get out through the doors. (Note, many areas have made this "illegal" from a fire safety standpoint.) Thief did manage to get some camera gear and a few other items, but the logistics of the theft reduced his haul considerably. A family member arrived home while he was in progress, causing him to vacate (upon hearing the garage door opener). A determined thief can defeat most defenses, but the trick is to make YOUR home the least desirable to "attack" so that the thieves seek easier pickings elsewhere.
Obviously a stout door is also required. ...

Depends on construction code where you live, but often in US the door frame is one of the stoutest parts of the wall. Use 3" screws to get into the frame proper instead of just the trim and it's usually enough to hold against anything less than dedicated entry tools.

Muy buena idea lo malo es que al salir como va a entrar nesecita que alguien esté en casa siempre, y la otra es un mecanismo muy peligroso por el volumen que, si una persona entra sin cuidado corre el riesgo de perforarse la cabeza tendría que estar a una altura donde nadie corra peligro

Es una cerradura segura, solo para cuando ya se va a dormir, y tendría que estar en la parte alta de la puerta, para que no represente peligro de que alguien se lastime. Saludos.

Great idea, but you're going to need a different mounting method because anyone who can bust a door open isn't going to need to put in very much extra effort to get through the door despite those 4 to 8 approximately 1-inch wood screws mounted in some soft door jam or trim wood, now on the other hand if you mounted your latch on a heavy-duty Steel door which was mounted in a Steel door Frame which was very well anchored in a structure, and then welded your latch in place,
well then you'd have something effective.

o que tenga un iman en la parte superior, así lo tiene en el imásn en posición de abierto y cuando deseas cerrar por dentro, lo desenbonas del imán y cae a la cerradura... hay varias formas de resolverlo, es buen diseño, pero tiene ese problema... saludos

Nice. You should put a magnet to keep it in the open position so if you leave the house and slam the door, it does not lock you out. The magnet would hold it up but still be easy to lock when you are inside.
These are widely available in the UK, in galvanised steel, as self-locking gate latches
In the US too.

Este mecanismo es más mejor para puertas de cercas o corrales ya que pues es más fácil abrirlas si está en el exterior
Es muy sencillo prever que el aldabo caiga solo, añadir una pieza de magneto a la pieza que va fija al marco, de esa manera cada vez que se levante el aldabo se quede adjunto al mismo!!!!

Se está complicando la cosa, si con el magneto lo dejas levantado, que seguridad ofrece el sistema para que no se abra?? ahora, con un sistema de enclavo/desnclavado a distancia, si le veo la utilidad

Everyone has something to say about something. I was a Police officer and used to go to neighborhood watch meetings. There are many ways to safeguard your house. One of my favorite sayings was that a nosy neighbor is great because they are often who will notice someone who isn’t supposed to be in your house. Just a tip from a retired toolmaker from Australia always preplan and drill as many holes first before cutting to smaller sections. This way you can hold one single uncut length by hand . Cheers I do this now on all projects . Cheers

Podemos realizar la idea mas pequeña y una terminacion acorde a su uso.

Great device and idea. simple build but very strong. Thanks for the instruction. Keep in mind though, it's only as strong as the screws and wood holding it to the door, which is based on the strength of the frame itself. adding a longer piece of steel to the frame and securing with several screws would harden the frame then I think a larger mounting plate on the door itself with 8 screws would harden the door. You'd have to try it out and see how much force would it take to break the frame and go from there. Cheers!
But you can weld it to the door frame.. you need to use bamboo welding rod .
those "welds" would break with just a few kicks.

When you weld, why don't you just strike an arc and lay down a bead instead of welding with a series of tack welds? By the way, one good kick and your cheap screws will pull right out of the wood trim they are screwed into.
I'm thinking maybe they have to do it that way in all these videos because the welder isn't strong enough or their power can't supply enough current to maintain welding a bead. But, who knows
@@rickyhall7514 That is not likely the case. I believe it is because so many of the people doing the welding don't have the skill to strike an arc and run a clean bead. These are not strong welds that they are making.
@@ROKuberski Interesting perspective you have. What I know is, I used to run a mig welder, but when I first bought it I lived in a house with poor wiring. Even the shop had poor wiring and I couldn't maintain an arc for more than about 5 seconds before blowing fuses. Also, maybe, with SO many comments about the poor technique, maybe they're pushing it now in their videos simply for the greater comments. Thereby leading to more traction for views, but I know it's a stretch, it's just what a lot of other channels do often.

I can kick that door down in a split second, not good when you bolt it to the casing on the door. You're better off installing a U-joint on each side of the door with four bolts and running a metal rod so that the door cannot be kicked in.

Creo que con un buen empujón se salen esos tornillitos de la madera. Igual que la puerta no se ve muy macisa. Y como dicen más abajo, sólo funciona si hay alguien adentro porque si se te ocurre salir y cerrar, tienes que derribar la puerta para volver a entrar
Imagine attaching the piece that mounts to the door frame to a large metal plate by a large hinge, and attaching that plate to the studs in the wall with large lag screws. Then remove the tiny screws in the door frame and use a small spring to swing the hole assembly toward the wall when not in use. I can see myself and others losing a LOT of skin on that device no matter how much it's de-burred. Do the same with the bolt side on the door.

Para todos los que comentan sobre el riesgo de quedarse afuera... en el título del video lo dice muy claro: "Con esto NO ENTRARÁN en tu casa NUNCA MÁS - Idea Brillante". - Respecto a lo brillante de la idea, supongo que ya depende de si tienes forma de acceder a la habitación por otro lado. Al menos se me hace buena idea para una puerta trasera para las casas donde se puede entrar al patio y llegar a la parte posterior (cosa que aprovechan los ladrones para intentar entrar sin ser vistos), se puede asegurar esa puerta así, y uno puede acceder al domicilio por la entrada principal, con un cerrojo normal. PERO, si es la única entrada... ahí sí que se cumpliría eso de que ya no entrarán en casa NUNCA MÁS (ni los dueños), hasta que le pongan una o varias buenas patadas a la puerta y salgan del marco esos 4 tornillos. Saludos!! P.D. Cómprense e instálense un buen cerrojo con llave. ;)

Mount a magnet on the door just above the hinge part to hold it secure so it doesn’t fall if you slam the door and need to get back in
Better mount a magnet on the top of that to keep the latch from dropping when you close door too hard on your way out, or you’ll have to kick the door really hard to shear off the heads on those wimpy screws you attached the latch to the door & jamb with.

It's a common outdoor gate latch. I believe they have holes in the latch so you can use a rope to open from the other side. It's not really a design for indoor use. Also as another user stated it is only as strong as your screws and what you screw it to. Your better off reinforcing the strike plate of the normal door knob and deadbolt.
How are you the first person to see this? You can buy a latch like this for a couple of quid at any ironmongers -- and it won't be half as ugly as this one.
Soldado En una puerta trasera de acero con marcó, también, de acero la veo muy bien.
Pero en madera la veo muy frágil a una fuerte patada.
Eso mismo creo una patada y los tornillos revientan

Es tan bueno este sistema que tiene un riesgo de caerse la cerradura y quedar por fuera. Falta algo para en caso de salir no se caiga la traba...los felicito!!!!
Great idea. However the screws are the weak spot. They are too shallow. They are too close to the edge of the jamb. The wood that it is being attached to is the wood trim which is not that thick or strong. There are double studs at each side of the jamb. Plus the attachment to the door is also weak - too close to the edge. If the door is a solid core door, you could attach it a little further back. I saw a comment that stated to throw a 2x member in brackets on each side of the jambs. That is my suggestion.
El sistema está bárbaro, pero si depende de 4 tornillitos, vas a a encontrar la casa vacía y el sistema infalible en el piso. Debería ir soldado en una puerta de metal, ahí si.
No creo que lo encuentre en el piso si el ladrón usa una sierra en canto libre, o caladora, o tal vez un serrucho de mano, simplemente corta la puerta y empuja lo que no esté unido a la cerradura; sin complicaciones.

Con una o dos patadas violentas a la puerta vuelan los 8 tornillos... El sistema, si bien mas elaborado, no deja de tener la misma fragilidad de un pequeño pasador..... Si la idea es que la puerta quede fácilmente trabada....bien; si la idea es proteger la vivienda de una intrusión....no !!!!
Para una casa no lo veo, te quedas fuera a la primera de cambio. Por la solidez que tiene creo que podría ser útil por ejemplo para evitar que se cierren grandes puertas de fincas, talleres o naves que hayan de mantenerse abiertas durante el día.
Realmente descubrio el agua tibia despues de un aguacero , ese sistema pero de fabrica con mas esterica lo vende en los herrajes de ferreteria en Homedepot para las puertas de jardin y las de los parios con solo unos pocos dolares los compra y no son agresivos.

Una sugerencia que te puedo dar para tu próximo video es un sistema que vi cuando yo era adolescente, cuca acaba de un tornillo sin fin soldado a la parte de atrás de la puerta o sea hacia adentro de la casa con unas tuercas y pero no de las comunes sino que estás eran exageradamente largas, en una de las puntas del tornillo sin fin había una especie de engranajes y unas varillas del 8 o del 10 el cual al girar una manivela hacía que estás varillas subirán o bajaran trabando la puerta
Esos tornillos o la madera, aguantan como 400 lbs de empuje, y la cerradura va a sobrevivir, pero ni el marco de madera, ni la puerta, van a poder enfrentar a un intruso decidido.

Es tan bueno que tuvo que instalarlo porque no lo tiene instalado en su propia casa. Un sistema de seguridad que te deja afuera de tu propia casa. Extremadamente útil.
Excelente diseño es muy ingenioso pero en cuanto a como esta sujetada la cerradura lo veo muy fragil, todos sabemos que esos tornillos son muy fragiles y delgados ademas estan atornillados en madera por lo cual con solo 2 patadas se esgarrara la madera o partira los tornillos por lo cual deveria tener muchos mas tornillos o buscar la manera de sujetarlo de otro forma

@@antonio4463negativo mira bien los tornillos que utilizó para agarrar la cerradura a la puerta son super delgados y fragiles con 2 patadas que le den a la puerta se arrancara la cerradura de la puerta

Pretty nifty! Cheap and pretty simple (if you have a welder). I'd put 3" screws on the frame side and as long screws as possible on the door side without going through. I'd want to put a latch ON the latch to keep it UP when I'm on the OUTSIDE! LOL What happens when you're outside and the latch falls down!? NO KEY FOR THAT!!
put a strong magnet above to hold it up when not in use.
I can buy a latch like that at Home Depot for a lot cheaper than buying a welder

Those screws on that door or doorframe plates aren't going to be too strong being that close to the edges of each, but the main question is if it is latched inside and the door opens inward how would you get inside your own house from the outside?

Muy buena idea. Es evidente que solo se puede salir, pero a toda persona que le interesan estos temas se da cuenta de inmediato que hace falta algún ajuste. Se puede dejar un poco más corto y con las puntas redondeadas. Con respecto al cierre, se puede activar un iman como decia un amigo en un comentario anterior y se podría activar de diferentes formas, con la huella o con una targeta magnética, porqué no. Esta es la parte mecánica, lo demás lo pone cada uno. Muchas gracias por el aporte. Saludos desde Chile.

The mechanism is great, and it’s very solid. It needs to be welded better, with better finishing work, but overall really cool. The only problem is that the weak point is now the mounting. The screws!! One hard kick would rip the screws out of the wood.
How do you get in if you're the one outside? The slamming of the door could make the mechanism fall

Hi, Mr. E. Fun little project, but would not stop someone from getting in. The part you screwed onto the door trim needs to be L-shaped and the screws need to be 4-inch steel deck screws going into the door frame. Tack welds will not hold. Lay a true weld along both sides of the metal seam. Thanks for sharing! Stay Healthy!

Tiene q tener cuidado pq si sale a sacar la basura o otra actividad se baja ese gozne q hizo y se quedara afuera pq se puede bajar esa parte no le hizo algo para sujetar q no se baje mientras cierra la puerta mientras sale, y el golpe le puede bajar ese gozne. Buena idea pero le falto ese detalle. El q haga esa idea q le haga un sujetador para cuando salga no se baje el gozne y quede afuera. Pero lo felicito tremenda idea, me gusto👍

I guess that helps if you don't mind locking yourself outside often. Also it's only as secure as the door and the frame is strong. One good kick will split the frame or knock the screw out. But as long as you feel secure that is the important part

The design and theory is a few hundred years old but fabricating this kinda stuff is what makes it fun. Of course like others I see in the comments, there are a few downfalls and future “fails” waiting to happen with it but I also really enjoy the stuff that comes up in the comments. Thanks

Es buen invento, solo le falta un iman potente arriba para bloquear el mecanismo y que no se cierre cuando estas fuera. Porque ¿Cómo se abre desde afuera si se cierra accidentalmente?
