Russ, you are not old. I’m 69 in a few days. Sadly, sold my last bike in 2020. This review is brilliant, so good to see the countryside & very little noise. Just the wind. What an absolute joy. Thanks so much for all your posts over the years. You helped get me back into biking when I was age 59🤗 Still enjoy watching your channel👌
I rode a Brammo before, and oh man was that fun. Odd - a vehicle being so quiet you can hear the brake switch modulate. I could adapt to one of these here in the US, just would need charging stations more available. Nice review, and congrats on the new bike.
Between the silence of the bike , the beautiful countryside, and the 3d camera this is one of my favorites of your clips .. The light and the countryside were just cracking ..Thanks as always from New England ...:) PS When your 70 // 50 sounds like a hoot ... :)
Brilliant! Well done. I'm a huge ambassador for the electric stuff. I have a NIU electric scooter in the garage at the moment. Nothing like the Zero stuff but electric all the same. Must be a nice bike to own that. Congrats👍🍻
Thanks for your positive comment. My subscribers are mostly respectful and put forward some good arguments but on other channels I've seen such aggressive/luddite type behaviour. ☺
If we go down this electric vehicle road, then we will be building many more nuclear power stations to add further to our grandchildren's woes while they're struggling with the global heating emergency! Get a push bike instead!
@@thetessellater9163 I totally disagree. I respect where your coming from but infact we will see more solar and wind farm energy like we are already and wave power.
Are you using any of the Insta360 sound recording? I find it's just not usable as soon as you pick up any speed. The gopro session with dual mic setup is way better for that. I'm not sure yet what I'll do to fix mine but might be a combination of both or just use recording from the helmet cam.
HAHA that bell! 😂 That is a great looking bike, bro. Good call on the top box. Panniers kill your range big time. Also, that insta360 rocks. I just wish the exporting time was quicker. Man I'm so excited to see more popular motovloggers on electrics! Thank you for taking a chance on the Zero 😁💪🔋⚡
Yes, we're pioneers. You were the first RUclipsr that the English electric motor co recommended to me. It's great gathering all this info. Thanks for the comment. ☺
@@RoadcraftNottingham whooaaa, no way! Man I'm still such a small youtuber in the grand scheme of things so I'm glad you're showing off what electrics can do.
I used to live in Acle, about two miles distant from the infamous “Acle straight”. Every Friday night we could hear bikes with loud exhausts heading to Gt Yarmouth several miles away. My neighbours would ask if I was one of those “noisy bar stewards” (I think that’s what they said.). The simple fact is that loud exhausts merely annoy others. On the point about how quiet the electric bike is. I’m aware that some blind people have commented that they have concerns about electric cars. The cycle bell seems to be a good compromise for warning of your presence without alarming, but I would be concerned it’s not loud enough at, say, 30mph to give sufficient time to react.
Fair comment Steve. The bell was fitted by myself, it isn't a Zero thing (although it would be a nice touch) If I was approaching at speed from a distance I'd consider a couple of short "pips" of my standard horn and of course, a speed reduction. Always makes me smile when people talk about loud pipes and safety when all they need to do is anticipate a little more.
@@davidholden2658 I was vaguely aware there was something along those lines. Following a train of thought from there, raises the question, “Would a blind person hear an electric car approaching if a nearby vehicle had a loud exhaust?”.
ATM prices are equal to BMW, KTM etc models with all the options. But you can already find some of these electrics as second hand or (mostly it seems like) old stock and demo bikes. If anything I would totally recommend getting one with dealer warranty. Depending on where you live you can overcome limited range with either a zero and up to 12kW chargers for AC charging. Or Energica with up to 24kW DC charging. That last one charges so fast the even the older 13.4kWh battery models are a great option. They are a bit less efficient then the Zero models and Zero has 14.4kWh so range is less. As long as you don't use highway too much, for that only bigger batteries are a solution for now.
@@Hans2183 "with all the options" being the main point here. These are still way more expensive than base models, you can get a 1290r for £5k less and it's going to be way more practical for touring.
Great upload and happy new bike day sir. Also 55 and a grandparent. Made as much noise as anyone over the years but now I quietly go about my business. No fuss, no drama.
Im so glad you mentioned the rear brake, the amount of arguments ive had with people that at high speeds you dont touch the rear brakes, the sizes of the discs gives it away, only time i ever used the rear brakes on a bike bike was to keep the bike balanced at low speed, or at a stop, other than that it was 100% fronts all the time.
Excellent video, the 360 cam really adds some production value to the footage. Very much looking forward to the full review once you have bedded into the bike a little more.
I've had my eye on this company for many years now and it's so great to see them get to a level of refinement and function that really makes the argument. The FX would be the one for me, living on a dirt road with terrible gravel and dirt and broken pavement in my area but I suspect the ergos are too small for me (6'5"). I don't ride nearly enough and one of the huge advantages of these is that you don't have the stale fuel issues with an ICE bike if you aren't careful.
I’m looking at an SR/F. Not sure if I have asked this before but how does the SR/S compare to the SR/F? Is there a big difference in comfort? My other concern is how good the pillion seat is, as my wife is quite particular about her comforts!
Can't answer the pillion question as Leanna rides her own bike. The bars are slightly higher and the pegs slightly lower. Sr/f owners have been known to fit sr/s pegs.
@@Mac-dx4rd Have deaths from electric cars increased? If riders are relying on the sound of their bike to be safe I'd suggest more training or at least a rethink 😉 ☺
I seem to remember on the news some legislation due to come out and TFL had already adopted it. The buses made a very strange noise I just thought it might ruin your asmr riding ruclips.net/video/8huGuan_h_s/видео.html
Really strange with no noise. What would be the equivelent cc to a conventional bike for performance etc. Not sure if I worded this right but you know what I mean. 👍
Must admit, I've ridden a VTR1000 that had straight through pipes and would happily set off house alarms - and it's owner was followed at NSL with Police trying to pull him over for a good 10mins - he couldn't hear the sirens. Since then, I've grown up - nothing wrong with a little stealth. Very interested in that camera setup though, I've been looking for something to add to the bike for front/rear camera, though I've no clue (yet) where I'd mount it on the ST1300 to get full 360.
@@RoadcraftNottingham lol, I already have a Prism Tube on the left side of the helmet, and a PacTalk on the right side... I do have space on the top...
I noticed you wear a retractable helmet (don't know if this is the right term). How safe would you say those are? I've always heard that full face helmets with double D ring retention system are the only really safe ones. Thanks!!
There is no evidence of the chin piece or strap coming undone in crashes and until there is, I'll keep using one. If you find anything, feel free to share it here. ☺
We call them modular in the USA. They are very handy to get more air or talk when stopped. You can’t generally use them at track days. I have a Shoei Neotec 2 and I like it. I bought my wife a Scorpion and it is good quality too.
Loving the idea of the bicycle bell. The surprised look on people's faces would be priceless. As for Tyres, as others have said, Michelin Road Pilot 5. Brilliant tyre in all conditions. 👍
I'm trading in my VFR1200DCT for a Zero DSR in the next few days (hopefully tomorrow). Seriously can't wait to feel that instant torque and being able to hear the birds sing on the way into work in the early hours of the morning. Only downside is as its not got a charge tank (at the moment ;)) its 9 hours for a charge and an 80 mile range, but I've done more than 45 miles in 1 day only once in the past 2 years so I'm not expecting it to be an issue
Since asked for recommendations Ive done my last 80k miles on Metzeler Z8 Interacts. I intend to replace the stock Pirellis with those like on my other bike. No problem with the Pirellis but I just want to stick to what I know and am used to
That looks like a great bike Russ and the acceleration is unbelievable. It's instant. You should do a segment on rear braking. Apologies if you have already. I only ever use the rear brake at junctions or coming to a roundabout in 2nd or 3rd gear doing inside 30 mph. And it works fine for that. I always use michelin PR4 or Road 5 tyres. They are perfect, I think, for our climate. For variances of wet, dry, warm, cold roads.
Yes, I'm planning on getting people to be practising their braking to get back into good habits. That rear brake deffo has less "feel" than some bikes I've ridden but with a hefty boot I can get the ABS kicking in on a dry surface.
@@thetessellater9163 I never touch the back brake at speed in case of rear wheel lock, unless I'm doing an emergency stop where I balance front and rear at the same time and not stand on them. I practice this on a straight bit of road. But any other time I only use the back brake at low speed along with the front. And only use the back brake when sitting at traffic lights. Maybe I'm doing all this wrong and would be open to suggestions. As I said you're never done learning on a bike
I've had a "ding-a-ling" bicycle bell on my KLV1000 for some time now. Carbon cans mean I don't need it normally, but it's fun confusing people when stationary at lights, etc.
Tyre wise I love the Michelin Road 5s I've got on my CBF600. More than good enough for me in the dry, I've never even got close to the limit on them with the riding I do, and in the rain they feel pretty good as well. Milage wise I have got 4000 miles on the set at the minute and at least half the usable tread left.
I have Michelin Pilot Road 4s and 5s on two of my bikes. I am not skilled enough to give a full evaluation, but they seem excellent in cornering and rain to me.
+1 for Catweazle quote: "Electrickery"! Of course, its quite fitting by now, considering your age. Hope you continue to enjoy the bike Russ and thanks for another vid!
I’d love one of these. I think I could deal with the range, I’d just incorporate regular stops where I could top up. Hopefully by the time I’m thinking of buying a pure road bike (I do a lot of off-road riding), there’ll be some marvellous new battery tech that reduces cost and increases range/reduces charge time. Something like a KTM 790 adv-r would be perfect, green laning in silence would be amazing, and then that electric acceleration on the way home.
You’re convincing me more and more of the 360 camera 👍 I’m still not convinced about going electric, perhaps a test ride would change my mind. If there’s an alternative electric bike to rival my R6 then maybe. I think there’s a stigma attached to electric bikes, where most stick their nose up at them lol. Including myself
I have that bike in gray. What is the little windscreen add on called? Id like to try that. Ive added a fan to cool the motor on mine as it gets used on highway at high speed every day. edit Nevermind I found some on Amazon
The commute I make is about 15 miles of road going about 50 mph and 18 miles of highway going 90-120mph, averaging around 100mph. I have the instantaneous efficiency guage as the C choice. It shows 105wh/m on the slow part, thats roughly 80-90 miles for a full charge there I guess. On the highway its between 300-330wh/m , so thats what... 30 miles on a full charge? Drops like a stone.
I had a blast on Zero FXS - absolutely linear power delivery, silent and 107 Nm of tourque on tap. That's all the torque of a liter Fireblade available IMMEDIATELY. And great around town too. I borrowed the bike for a weekend and if it weren't so expensive, I'd be riding one now. Question on the clip-on plexi shield - can you, please, share the link to the source? I have a Puig but a bit too small for my big frame :) Thanks.
When I'm driving my car, the sound of motorcycles really gets noticeable when they are already passing me, not when we approach each other or they come up behind. That would be way to late if we were going to collide.
I agree that it takes a really noisy bike to get the attention of people in cars and we should always be trying to anticipate things. However, I think the problem will be with pedestrians in busy towns or cities. It’s a regular problem for cyclists in the city. Car traffic is stopped and pedestrians just step out sometimes without looking. However, I thought there were some regulations on the way for electric vehicles requiring an artificial sound below a certain speed? At the same time I suspect bike tyres will be relatively silent to a much higher speed than car tyres.
@@davycampbell4625 riders should anticipate more and take responsibility for their own and the safety of others. It does frustrate me sometimes when some riders/drivers expect the pedestrians to look for them.
@@RoadcraftNottingham I would agree with that and said as much in my comment. I've been commuting through London suburbs for 30 years by bike and cycle with no serious encounters with pedestrians, but simply observe that, like the spanish inquisition, nobody much expects a silent bicycle! With the huge increase in cycling in recent years, people are getting more used to them and it's not as bad as it used to be, but the cycle bell gets used a lot to let people know I'm there. I don't have a loud motorcycle, but it still seems reasonable to think a bike that's near silent at low speeds could introduce some risks. On the other hand, if the motorbike industry is going anywhere, it will need to get some electric bikes for the masses out there. It will be interesting times. Looking forward to hearing how you get on with the SRS.
Wouldn't fancy filtering on one of those. Even if it has a warning noise, it would still confuse other road users. Maybe it could do with some speakers and a bike engine emulator. You could have: thumper, V twin, triple, or inline 4, etc.
There's a 'law' (?) or a coming one, for electric cars (in Europe already I think) that the electric cars do have to 'make a noise' - not sure of the details ... H&S, of course ...
I used to commute on a push bike and filtering was never a problem. If you used all your regular motorbike riding hazard perception skills there will be no additional danger when filtering on a leccy bike. Most people are in modern well insulated cars with music or radio playing and happy in their little bubble, so wouldn't hear the exhaust and engine sound of a motorbike until it was passing right next to them anyway
Just to add my experience and thoughts. My comment did not exclude being alert or taking being noticed for granted. On my TDM, a tall bike with good road presence and that had a nice big twin rumble, I found that in slow moving traffic vehicles would edge over to give me room though they were some metres ahead. This was a regular occurrence for me. Also there's a reciprocity involved. Car drivers and pedestrians appreciate being alerted to the presence of a vehicle and not getting a jolt as it wafts by silently. It's not _just_ about our safety and comfort.
I looked, is there really no clutch lever?!? (or is one an optional accessory!?!) There's a lot I do with my clutch - as you say, slow speed control enhancement is also done with the back brake ... but ... the clutch as well, sometimes. There's probably a traction control? that can be turned off if you're brave enough to spin the back wheel just on the throttle - but I don't do 'burnouts' anyway, so that use is not important to me. The control aspects though ... are!
Camera is brilliant. Must say also being able to hear what’s going on around you while on the bike is very handy without any of your own (bike) noise to filter out. Hope it’s a good reliable long term bike for you. Oh and another fan of the Michelin Road 5, great in the dry and almost hardly feel I have to adjust my thinking in the wet, they’re that good!
Electric vehicles are fun to drive😎. We have several cars & motorcycles, the Nissan Leaf is the vehicle of choice for all the day to day stuff. It has several advantages, it doesn't vibrate, it accelerates instantly ++. With all that instantaneous torque I hope the zero has a good traction control system. I'm looking forward to your videos as you get to know the bike.
Hi, the bike's still excellent despite a few teething issues. Had it just over a year now. I've plans for several uploads but am really not motivated unfortunately, can't be bothered with all the editing. Thanks for the comment.
I really like your choice of machine and look forward to all your upcoming insights. Michelin Road 5's would be my choice and "comedy" horn (can we still get horns that play Yellow Rose of Texas?) I like the fact you lean into the quirky and would add a "Gotta Lotta Bottle" sticker to your back box! As it pulls like a train, goes like the proverbial and folk of a certain age (us...) remember the 80s, so recognising the milk float forebears would be a nice touch and gain a chuckle from most I think... 😊🖖🏍
@@RoadcraftNottingham 😊 All this talk of EV having to make noises for pedestrian awareness, God help us, can you imagine if we are allowed to pick our own sample/tune... dunno if I would go with a traditional UNTZ UNTZ (possibly with paradiddle/noodly bits) or go totally off it with a Spagetti Western Ennio Morricone thing! There was an ice cream van that played the Good, the Bad and the Ugly in Leeds I heard many years back, always stuck with me. Possibilities lol 😁
I would love an electric bike, but for one I don't have the budget and for the other I just absolutely love classic bikes. Also I am working in IT, so I will not feel save on a vehicle that has a bootscreen. Biggest thing for me on electric bikes is the noise. My GSX 400E 1982 is fairly quite compared to most bikes over here (since I have the stock exhaust), but it still limits me in where I can go without feeling bad about the noise. I would love to do some bicycle speed rides through the forests and neighborhoods, but I would just feel bad for the animals (and neighbors). I do love the sound she makes as well though =P
I had Diablo Rosso's on my first bike and loved them, put them on my mt09 and when it was time to change I got a good deal on some Metzler z8's and I don't think I'll be going back to the Rosso's, really rate the Metzlers. The idea of doing silent wheelies around town makes me very excited
Nice review, and after riding one of these the other days. I'm throughly impressed and wish these were cheaper as I loved how much fun I had. While yet with a simple mode change, it's something you can ride casually to work or wherever. Two small things I'd want changed is the seat to be pushed front by about 1-2 inches. As I found myself riding up against the "tank" vs the where I'm suppose to sit. And wished the mirrors were at or above the handlebar. Anyway, I do hope to own one these and maybe a electric or a hydrogen vehicle sometime in soon. (5-10 years).
5:08 Wouldn't expect fuel injection to cause to many problems on electric-engined vehicles. With conventional petrol engines, the cams on the ohc could accumulate gunk and dirt etc so the engine won't feel that smooth, but with electric bikes the motor is turning so fast that any uneveness in the fuel injection supply is spun off so quickly that the rider doesn't feel it.
Fuel injection? On an electric bike? You surely must be confused. Also, if you accumulate gunk and dirt in your cams, you have bigger problems than an 'non-smooth engine'. There should be no gunk there at all if you change your oil according to a reasonable schedule. The 'not being smooth' part of fuel injected bikes has nothing to do with cams, but more so with the way the control system is programmed which injects the fuel into the manifold. Traditional carburated engines have an inherent 'low pass' filter because of their mechanical workings (limited bandwidth) which makes for a much smoother ride. It took a while for manufacturers to catch up to this with motorcycle fuel injection. In general, I am often quite confused as to why the motorcycle world is so slow to pick up new technology.
So how is it going? I've spotted an srf close to me for 11k,iam considering it,3k miles. It has fast charger, does this mean I could use rapid charge points?
@@RoadcraftNottingham they do well on my tracer 900, but would like to go electric but the thing that is stopping me is insurance. Full comp around £1500 for the year., how did find the insurance quotes.

What a lovely, positive comment, thank you. I was just this second thinking how angry/aggressive some people are about electric bikes. Very quiet, I might find that hard to get used to. The 360 camera's amazing and the bicycle bell’s a cool addition. The mirrors seemed to be fairly low. Christopher Cross; Ride like the wind came to mind.

Hi road craft nodding ham , I no you have just bourt the bike and is a first impressions vid . What about hiydreon for fuel instead of electric then you don't have to spend so much and use your present bike and I think there are better all alternative and less waste products that come from battery manafactery and disposal of chemical waste so what do you think . I think we are being forced down one direction and other allternatives been looked at paul
Nice touch for the bicyclist's bell, is inline with Zero's filosofie, I like the intention! I can fully understand your initial struggle, it is like a relationship, it needs to grow on you. I think. (but I would also expect when you ride for a few weeks, months, combustion-type motorcycles may become a bit off putting, eventually) I would value lesser engine-noise on 2 wheels as that is one of many things I do appreciate, the smells, sounds etc. Loud pipes are definitely not one of them and is in fact proven off putting to the general public and causes motorcycles being banned from certain areas. These types of electric motorcycles will be the future for sure and, other then the price at the moment, I would not hesitate for a second adopting that for my riding. (in the future) Yes, range-anxiety would be a thing but I'm sure in due time will be second nature. And a good charging-infrastructure will take the sting out of that soonest. Paniers are often a "thing" making the motorcycle too wide, and I myself have opted for "authority"-lids which are half the width of the regular lids. I will only ever allow my mirrors to be the widest part on my motorcycle, that is what I can see & control. The top-case is a wee bit big from the looks of it but without the paniers, it needs to compensate the absence so practicality above looks. I do think you made an excellent decision and congratulate you, I'm looking forward to your future content. As for tires, (on a typicla heaver bike) I so far never have been let down by Michelin's but I'm told the Metzlers are also quite good nowadays.
Charging infrastructure ? Who wants to wait for it to charge the only way I see is take it out and swap it for a charged one which will happen but probably a lot more than charging
@@Mac-dx4rd More & more electric bikes offer fast-charge (=Level 3) options, commonly known as DC-charging, so you can get an up-to 80% (or even to full) within the hour or even less. (35 minutes are quoted by some) So that waiting will be less & less when the infrastructure is rolled-out. Which is happening in The Netherlands as we speak. (in my very small town we have close to 30x charging-stations and about 2x every week added) Including fast-charging stations on & around highways & all major roads. Swapping-out (or renting) a battery-pack will, in my humble opinion, only be successful if all brands (it being a motorcycle, car, bicycle, moped) share the same battery-pack, as those are quite a significant cost (and endure the biggest wear-and-tear) of owning a motorcycle, car, bicycle, moped et cetera. Read: standardisation. Similar to the standards for charge-connector (there are, I believe, at minimum 4x different systems), let alone the countless charge-cards (currently being investigated by the Dutch authorities to make sure that you know upfront what your costs will be) being used. There is no one/single system, that can become a hurdle. At least that is my believe. There is a lot of pioneering going on in the world of EV (electric vehicles) and in due time we will need to embrace it. Even Though I personally like the sound (& smell) of the combustion-engines of my several vehicles I own, I do see & understand the benefits of EV's. EV's are more & more moving away from the chicken-and-the-egg situation, where there will be plenty-ful (and affordable) EV's to choose from and a well-covered charging-infrastructure. In due time.
@@Mac-dx4rd you always start full. So for most trips charging isn't an issue. There are far more chargers in the UK than petrol stations, so charging on the road shouldn't be an issue. Battery swaps work for scooters in SE Asia, because there's the customer density. It will never work in the West because there aren't enough riders to make it practical to set up a battery rental scheme and the packs for motorcycles are too heavy to lift. The Zero gives you a full charge in an hour from a fast charger and most fast chargers are free. No one will pay 100 pounds a month for a battery swap to save themselves an hour charging. The gogoro battery swap subscription is 10 USD a month per pack for 1.3 kWh packs. This is a 13 kWh pack. So even if you could get to the economy of scale that is inherent in Taiwan scooters, that's 100 dollars a month, plus swap fees. If you could lift a 13 kWh pack, which you can't.
Interesting decision you made, although as you quite rightly said to me before top loading videos players were a fortune when they first hit the high street. So who knows where we shall be in 5 years from now. Funny has you get older the noise and glimpse at yourself in a office block window wears off. The danger for me on quite electric bike is may hear the theme tune from chips more often 🤩
😂 😂 😂. I spend £4k on a 42" 480p plasma monitor (not even a tv) in 2002 and loved every minute of it whilst others waited for the price to come down. Then when it did, I upgraded to a newer one. ☺
Nice one..an e-bike in your garage. I was lucky enough to be offered a ride on the SR/F by my local dealer some time ago..when the bike first arrived. I was very impressed. Sure we can pick apart the brakes, suspension, seat comfort piece by piece but that misses the point. Overall it was great. In terms of torque, acceleration and riding position it reminded me of Tuono. That is high praise. I would buy one now if the price was lower and the charging time shorter. As an old 50 year-old rider, with 30 years on the road under my belt, I look forward to see what the e-bike future will be. I hope I am still riding when it all really happens.
The only problem with this bike is that I can’t afford to buy one yet. I switched to electric cars 18 months ago and I am looking forward to a test ride on the electric motorcycle.
Just looked up the specs and while the range seems fine (my previous EV had a similar range and my current motorcycle also doesnt have an amazing range so i'm used to it) this bike has no CCS fastcharging from what i understand which makes it useless for me as i use my motorcycle as my only form of transport for longer journeys. I understand they can't charge with high speed due to the smaller battery and no active cooling but not being able to charge it at fast chargers at all is a dealbreaker. An electric motorcycle with a 15Kwh~20kwh battery and a CCS charger that can charge it in around 20to 30 minutes would be the minimum requirement for me to even consider an electric motorcycle. Definitely not against electric cars or vehicles but motorcycles aren't really there yet, unless you only use them for short commutes and charge them at home.
I've been riding electric scooters for the last nine years (and I don't mean those stupid things you stand on) to get around town. Don't need to go far nor do I need blistering top speed. They're perfect for that sort of travel. Would love one of these though. Maybe next bike ;)
Aww... I just said to my self when you aceelerated from standstill - I just have to get that... The silence and effortlessness is nice! Well maybe some day.
"Acceleration wise..." *cuts from speedo* "...it's just instant". I see what you did there, Russ ;) Actually, I don't, but you get the point haha. Lovely ride though, it'll be interesting to see how it'll hold up in time, especially after the Triumph experience which was really positive at the beginning. Cheers!
I would never force my opinion on other people, but I have seen a srf in the flesh and it going along ( after the mature chap who owned it dropped it low speed as he turned in too tightly and couldn’t “ clutch out to give drive” guess he could of applied some power .... anyway . Im still young and I have a street triple and the engine is the beating heart and soul of that bike, I don’t have to ride it fast to enjoy it because of gorgeous noise it makes, standard exhaust also so nothing obnoxious, but you start it up and that bass from a substantial engine and that whine just makes you know “ this thing will fly” I had before it a 390 Duke and the standard exhaust was so quiet You couldn’t hear the engine it was just wind noise and I just didn’t enjoy it , EV zealots can’t seem comprehend that, I don’t know I just can’t get excited by any of it I don’t mind EV’s but I would like the freedom of choice hopefully synthetic fuel will allow this.
Agreed. Firstly, I needed power during a U turn, simply opened the throttle and it pulled. I've seen many hundreds of people drop clutch bikes too. That was user error. Electric bikes shouldn't be compared to ice bikes as tourers shouldn't be compared to sport bikes. I love the sound of my rd250lc and cx650 turbo too so I feel there's space in my life for all types. I also love the sound of a street triple with an end can. Simple conclusion is if you don't want an electric bike, don't get one but you're missing out if you don't at least get a ride on one before concluding.
I'm liking the Insta 360 footage, look forward to your upload on that.
Can’t believe I have never bummed into you as you’re only down the road always great videos mate 👍
I rode a Brammo before, and oh man was that fun. Odd - a vehicle being so quiet you can hear the brake switch modulate.
I could adapt to one of these here in the US, just would need charging stations more available.
Nice review, and congrats on the new bike.
Thanks. ☺
Between the silence of the bike , the beautiful countryside, and the 3d camera this is one of my favorites of your clips .. The light and the countryside were just cracking ..Thanks as always from New England ...:) PS When your 70 // 50 sounds like a hoot ... :)
Pleased you enjoyed it. Thanks. ☺
Brilliant!
Yes, sound is awful so I just use the video.

The bell was fitted by myself, it isn't a Zero thing (although it would be a nice touch)
If I was approaching at speed from a distance I'd consider a couple of short "pips" of my standard horn and of course, a speed reduction. Always makes me smile when people talk about loud pipes and safety when all they need to do is anticipate a little more.
"noisy bar stewards" 😂😂👏👏
Those single 'ting' bells are not loud enough on bicycles - you need the old fashioned rotary sort, as I have, which are loud.
By law electric cars have to make an artificial 'engine' noise at low speeds to alert pedestrians. Not sure if the same thing applies to bikes though.
@@davidholden2658 I was vaguely aware there was something along those lines.
Following a train of thought from there, raises the question, “Would a blind person hear an electric car approaching if a nearby vehicle had a loud exhaust?”.
Michelin Road 5, magic in the rain and excellent mileage! Cheers!
Was about to post exactly this - well said!
Same here - Pilot Road 5's
I cannot wait enough for these to be truly affordable. That quiet and fast thing is just hitting my buttons.
Prices are ridiculous at present!!
That's not going to happen
Beautiful road to ride, green everywhere. (I'm from California...) Thanks for this review. I am very interested in this bike, the S version. Thanks.
Great upload and happy new bike day sir. Also 55 and a grandparent. Made as much noise as anyone over the years but now I quietly go about my business. No fuss, no drama.
Hello fellow "oldie". ☺
Well that looks like a serious bit of fun Russ. very impressive matey and as for that 360 Camera!!!! incredible. Cya soon buddy..
Hope you're well Steve. Yeah, that cam is amazing and the bike is fun. ☺
Excellent video, the 360 cam really adds some production value to the footage. Very much looking forward to the full review once you have bedded into the bike a little more.
I have done a few hundred more miles and liking it more and more. Stay tuned. ☺
How will dozy/plugged in pedestrians react to the noise? Isn't there some regulation soon that will mandate sound generation on electric vehicles?
Pedestrians walk out on ice vehicles so it is and always has been down to the rider to make sure it's safe.
Hi Russ just watched your clip with your zero are these bikes auto or gears
They're auto
I've had my eye on this company for many years now and it's so great to see them get to a level of refinement and function that really makes the argument. The FX would be the one for me, living on a dirt road with terrible gravel and dirt and broken pavement in my area but I suspect the ergos are too small for me (6'5"). I don't ride nearly enough and one of the huge advantages of these is that you don't have the stale fuel issues with an ICE bike if you aren't careful.
This is a pretty low bike but I think you can get a slightly taller seat for it. May be worth getting a test ride on one.
Is it quite enough to ride without ear plugs or is there still enough wind noise to make plugs a requirement.?
The wind noise is really from your helmet, depends on the brand.
I would go for a set of mitchelin pilot road 5 or 6. Cracking good tires in both wet and dry conditions
Have them on now. Amazing tyres and cured my problems
Will electric bikes have to emit a noise like electric cars will by a certain date to alert pedestrians?
Maybe in the future
Yes when more people start dying from this than drunk drivers which is going to happen
@@Mac-dx4rd Have deaths from electric cars increased? If riders are relying on the sound of their bike to be safe I'd suggest more training or at least a rethink 😉 ☺

Really strange with no noise. What would be the equivelent cc to a conventional bike for performance etc. Not sure if I worded this right but you know what I mean. 👍
Performance and acceleration of a 1000cc
Must admit, I've ridden a VTR1000 that had straight through pipes and would happily set off house alarms - and it's owner was followed at NSL with Police trying to pull him over for a good 10mins - he couldn't hear the sirens.
Since then, I've grown up - nothing wrong with a little stealth.
Very interested in that camera setup though, I've been looking for something to add to the bike for front/rear camera, though I've no clue (yet) where I'd mount it on the ST1300 to get full 360.

Nice one. I look forward to hearing how you get n with it and how it stands up to the UK weather. Tyres: Michelin Road 5 - You won't be disappointed.

We call them modular in the USA. They are very handy to get more air or talk when stopped. You can’t generally use them at track days. I have a Shoei Neotec 2 and I like it. I bought my wife a Scorpion and it is good quality too.

Since asked for recommendations Ive done my last 80k miles on Metzeler Z8 Interacts. I intend to replace the stock Pirellis with those like on my other bike. No problem with the Pirellis but I just want to stick to what I know and am used to
I've ordered the road 5s and will review them when I've done a few miles.
@@RoadcraftNottingham great Russ. I'll look forward to seeing that. You never stop learning on a bike 👍
Your instructor should have told you to use both brakes simultaneously, but gently and smoothly, surely?
@@thetessellater9163 I never touch the back brake at speed in case of rear wheel lock, unless I'm doing an emergency stop where I balance front and rear at the same time and not stand on them. I practice this on a straight bit of road. But any other time I only use the back brake at low speed along with the front. And only use the back brake when sitting at traffic lights. Pilot road 4 or 5
I’d love one of these.
You certainly need to change your thinking and riding plans when riding electric more than 100miles
Oh yes, technology will save us, eh? Nope!
Just put Michelin Road 5 on my Zero and I'm very happy so far.
They're all pretty similar. So how many miles do you get with regular motorway? My guess is about 70?
www.ebay.co.uk/itm/303008848849
The commute I make is about 15 miles of road going about 50 mph and 18 miles of highway going 90-120mph, averaging around 100mph. I have the instantaneous efficiency guage as the C choice. It shows 105wh/m on the slow part, thats roughly 80-90 miles for a full charge there I guess. On the highway its between 300-330wh/m , so thats what... 30 miles on a full charge? Drops like a stone.

It's certainly more difficult but you can kinda hear the motor whine pitch
I had a blast on Zero FXS - absolutely linear power delivery, silent and 107 Nm of tourque on tap. That's all the torque of a liter Fireblade available IMMEDIATELY. And great around town too. How is this bike going after two years? Any battery issues?
On its 3rd main battery amongst other things. Watch this space because the s*** is about to hit the fan.
Not sure how I feel about lack of noise from a safety perspective.
It means no difference to me as I'm always looking out for others anyway. May mean sounding my bell a little more for pedestrians. ☺
There's a 'law' (?) or a coming one, for electric cars (in Europe already I think)
that the electric cars do have to 'make a noise' - not sure of the details ... H&S, of course ...
Even filtering with louder pipes is no guarantee as the sound is omni directional. I just keep my wits about me as I always do.
Agreed. ☺
(or is one an optional accessory!?!)
There's a lot I do with my clutch - as you say, slow speed control enhancement is also done with the back brake ... but ... the clutch as well, sometimes. There's probably a traction control? that can be turned off if you're brave enough to spin the back wheel just on the throttle - but I don't do 'burnouts' anyway, so that use is not important to me. The control aspects though ... are!
No lever, fully automatic but the slow speed control on this bike is amazing. Next upload I'll have to demo it.
Cheers mate. I'm hoping it's gonna be reliable and I continue to get good service. You'll know if I don't 😂
That camera does my head in. It's filming the visor it's attached to - must be some black magic involved somewhere.

I was committed to buying a zero, but the realised I could get a Skoda citigoe, electric car for same price,no competition in my eyes.
!
😂 😂 😂 Yes, I'd love to get something that by the time it gets to 60 mph, the zero has done 60,... 0 then 60 again. ☺
@@RoadcraftNottingham iam sure you will find a vehicle that can do that if you search
You are brave enough to go for e-bike, congratulations with new purchase! Tirewise, there do you live , England, I thought, everyone ride with Michelins Road4/5 on. Pretty best in the wet/cold conditions. May well be considered for next tire choice.
That's another pr5 recommendation... Looks like I may be going that way. Thanks.
@@RoadcraftNottingham or Metzeller Roadtec 01 - also specifically good for cold&wet
I'm amazed of how smooth that 360 camera image is. did you stabilize it in post?
It's auto stabilisation and all editing done on the phone app.
@@RoadcraftNottingham Are you controlling the camera view while you are riding along? Or does it record everything in 360 degrees and you control it in editing?
@@reljoy It records 360 then I choose which way I want it to look in the phone editor then export it.
What made you go for an electric? You must have a garage at home ?
I like to be different and the electric is really smooth, quiet and relaxing to ride which at my age is welcome. Shame they're not more reliable. I'll be doing a full upload on the zero soon.
Pirelli Angel 2 for me, best tyre for general road use
Very quiet, I might find that hard to get used to. The 360 camera's amazing and the bicycle bell’s a cool addition. The mirrors seemed to be fairly low. Christopher Cross; Ride like the wind came to mind.
Always makes me smile when I stop out in the country. The mirrors are very similar to the Pan ones so I'm already used to them. Fantastically clear too.
So where do the batteries go Russ? 😄
Must be honest I'll never go electric. The road is part of be experience for me.
Yeah, it's certainly each to their own... In my next upload I've got a good list of things I'll never buy. Might make you smile. ☺
The dealer here is only 2 hours away. I've been watching this bike on other channels for a year. I would buy an electric motorcycle before an car. Ill see next year. Price is good. Mileage is fine. Just i need to look more into charge time. So for getting way impressed.
You're being beckoned 😂
Get you with your ‘electrickery’, you’ll be telling us next that you use them confusers in the I interweb next😂😂😂
Like the review, will be interested to see how it develops long term.👍
I'm hoping it's a happier story than the Triumph.
Well said but could go further than that
That "fire up" and move off was very disconcerting without engine noises...
You really get used to it and it's an absolute pleasure. ☺
It really isn't once you get used to it. Even on a much smaller electric bike...just squeeze the power on and have fun!
What is the thingy called on the screen russ?
Thingy? Insta 360 one x?
@@RoadcraftNottingham 😂 no sorry the extra screen, I mean the brand 😃

Nice touch for the bicyclist's bell, is inline with Zero's filosofie, I like the intention!
I can fully understand your initial struggle, it is like a relationship, it needs to grow on you. I think.
(but I would also expect when you ride for a few weeks, months, combustion-type motorcycles may become a bit off putting, eventually)
I would value lesser engine-noise on 2 wheels as that is one of many things I do appreciate, the smells, sounds etc.
Loud pipes are definitely not one of them and is in fact proven off putting to the general public and causes motorcycles being banned from certain areas.
These types of electric motorcycles will be the future for sure and, other then the price at the moment, I would not hesitate for a second adopting that for my riding. (in the future)
Yes, range-anxiety would be a thing but I'm sure in due time will be second nature.
PS: AMSR on an electric motorcycle, brilliant!
For some yes but far more will be put off by no sound in my opinion and where are motorbikes banned then ?
Charging infrastructure ? Who wants to wait for it to charge the only way I see is take it out and swap it for a charged one which will happen but probably a lot more than charging
@@Mac-dx4rd More & more electric bikes offer fast-charge (=Level 3) options, commonly known as DC-charging, so you can get an up-to 80% (or even to full) within the hour or even less. (35 minutes are quoted by some)
So that waiting will be less & less when the infrastructure is rolled-out. Which is happening in The Netherlands as we speak.
(in my very small town we have close to 30x charging-stations and about 2x every week added)
Including fast-charging stations on & around highways & all major roads.
Slowly coming round to the idea of electric bikes fast, low maintenance, get the looks and range and I'm in
It'll happen. Just keep an open mind. ☺
Lovely bike Russ, will you be teaching on it and retire the old Pan? 😉
I'll be teaching on it but not sure I'll ever get rid of the old faithful. It's my go to old slippers when the new stuff lets me down. ☺
The only problem with this bike is that I can’t afford to buy one yet. I switched to electric cars 18 months ago and I am looking forward to a test ride on the electric motorcycle.
Go for it, you'll love it. And remember if you're in the UK to use the English electric motor co. ☺
I forgot you were on electric bike for a second and thought you had a wireless clutch lever lol.
Hi there, I recommend Michelin road pilots five
Lovely interesting video. 👍
Thanks
Tyres - best choose round ones!!
I've ridden much more since and the more I ride it the more I love it.
Aww... I just said to my self when you aceelerated from standstill - I just have to get that... The silence and effortlessness is nice! Well maybe some day.
And it feels as good as it looked too. ☺
Electric motorcycle and a 360 camera someone is getting in touch with the future ay"
I've got to make the most of it before my brain starts going off 😂
Interesting watch
Thanks. More to come, stay tuned. ☺
well done sir!
"Acceleration wise..." *cuts from speedo* "...it's just instant". I see what you did there, Russ ;)
Actually, I don't, but you get the point haha. Lovely ride though, it'll be interesting to see how it'll hold up in time, especially after the Triumph experience which was really positive at the beginning. Cheers!
Agreed, I'm really hoping that Zero and my dealer don't let me down. Fingers crossed
Oh, I know a guy who legally changed his name to Max Power. 😃
@@RoadcraftNottingham I think it was very new too him, but it definitely wasn’t the bikes fault. I think your right although the internet can be a right mosh pit of people’s opinions .
