The new auto is awesome (I have the 8 speed auto JCW F56). Very cruisie in traffic, but shift into sport-manual for twisty, hilly roads and you won’t miss the manual - you can shift very smoothly with either the paddles or the shift lever (my preference after my manual R56 S) it just feels like an ultra smooth sequential manual with no time lag between shifts caused by using a clutch (regardless of how adept you are (I’m not slow in a normal manual). It is a very useful and great fun transmission - no need for the manual anymore, it does it all!!!
@@wayne90079 I’m not 100% sure, but there should be a toggle switch under the climate controls to change between modes, and the transmission selector can be pushed sideways to use manual
@@MrDaveNG I’ve looked in the manual and it shows a toggle switch but mine does not have one it is used for something else it must be the new eight speed auto
I drove a 2020 s countryman with the dct recently, it wasn’t good. I’ve driven a few of them with the 8 speed torque converter, absolutely loved it. Under light acceleration and basic maneuvering, they made the dct feel pretty transparent and “boring” with very smooth shifting which is fine because it’s not a problem. When throttling hard, I was immediately off-put. Unless the one I drove was defect, I will absolutely opt for the torque converter 8 speed, instead. I was shocked by how awful full-throttle shifts behaved. A lot of head bob and what felt lake poor throttle control of a novice manual transmission driver. Really awful. Also, the dct option will make this car a terrible choice for anyone wanting to use the countryman as an SUV. Dcts disallow easy obstacle power delivery and simply disallow it.
@The MINIac ordered my new 5 door Cooper S with the DCT box today .... can't wait, it's going to be my first ever non manual box, wouldn't have bothered if it had a torque converter 😃😎
Oh man. You're really ruining your credibility here with your channel... The DCT was very much available in 2016 in the Mini's... What do you think the 6 Speed Automatic was?
Got my new mini s, replacing the old mini s. I can confirm the new transmission at low speed is rubbish! Specially with start and stop. On traffic is horrendous. There is a lot of lag in many, I mean many cases, for instance, a sudden flooring of the throttle will take around 3 seconds to down shift, this is a lot! Gear changes with the steering paddles is in truly pathetic. I am so disappointed to be honest! Now I’m stuck with this car for a while now.
I have heard that the new 8/7 speed Mini's exhausts do not "pop" as much when you lift off of the throttle. Is that true, or do you think they didn't let the car properly warm up first?
@@TheMINIac yes, us in the UK do not get the over run on any new cars anymore, But Ford have got around this with the new Fiesta ST, with a performance pack and a Sport Mode. Not sure how it got past the EU regulations, but its the only new car i have found int he UK that pops on each gear change.
@@dimmacommunication you're welcome. It's not easy to find some sort of information. But i think it's vital to know before buy. In a cooper, I will buy it with no fears, but i wouldn't in a cooper s. Factory comes with 280nm, pretty near to the box limit. An stage 1 tune will be too far off the torque limit.

I had the Cooper S with manual transmission. I think for this engine I prefer it. If I got another Mini id get manual again.

DCT so it must have been front wheel drive since the All4 comes with the 8-speed automatic only.

Who's your passenger?
Hi miniac great video. Just wondering I've got to have a automatic. Is the dct gearbox reliable. Having a clubman.
@The Miniac Thank's ever so much I really appreciate your help and reply. Very helpful. First class 👍.
What's the difference with the regular automatic? What's on the 2021 Cooper S?
@@TheMINIac Thanks. Learning a lot with your videos.
I have mine Cooper s 2019 and it’s absolutely amazing the grip the speed and the

The MINIac well here in Mexico we have it since last year
The DCT has been available in the Mini's in the US for awhile now....
At the very latest it came in in 2017 on the MINI's.
A 7 speed one I'll agree. But Mini's were getting DCT's in 2016 even

2014 to 2024 are the same size cars
Since 2014 have they gotten bigger?

Zack, what was your experience with the transmission at lower speeds? Was it herky jerky or smooth?
