- In Episode 79, we use a torch, dolly and hammer to fix an oil canning issue and then we completely level the roof with body filler. It's straight now and no more oil can!

The roof came out great. I like the fact that you admit you've never attempted this type of repair before. It seems pretty risky but your confidence kicked in and made it happen. Great video and looking forward to the next phase of work to be completed on Christine.
I wish I video'd the other two. I didn't ding it with the hammer first. I let the torch rise a blister and then tapped it down without stretching it. It seemed to work quicker and better.

It's a lot of tedious work when restoring the cold vintage car. It takes a lot of time and patience but the results in the end will be well worth it . Keep up the good work 👏

I tried this once on a car I was doing a full paint job on. Ended up moving my "oil canning" center to different areas all over the roof.. ended up with about 20 different burn&beat marks, absolutely mangled my roof, and ended up having to cut it out and replace it. I will never attempt this method again.
My next best idea was to fiberglass the entire underside of the roof prior to install.
The two spots I fixed off camera, i did NOT punch them. I just heated a blister and then drove it down when it was hot. That seemed to work much better and was a lot less risky. If you saw the episode where I cut out the top driver's quarter, that was an oil canning situation gone bad.

I think your sandblaster caused those lows in the roof and the trunk lid. The supports are the high areas on both panels. Great job working them out.

Suggestion. I saw the photos of Christine before you started the restoration. If you go with the same two tone paint scheme, the A and B pillars should be the same color as the roof and deck. I did this myself about 30 years ago on a '55 and I wish I did it better, like you are.
Great observation! Most of the people who have noticed at cruise nights have commented that they like the body color on the B-pillar. The interior door trim is red. It's one of the identifying "beauty marks" that I'm going to keep.

Hey Bill, really nice work!!! I about lost my stomach when I saw how much that metal moved when you struck it with the hammer. I wonder if the filler alone would have solved the problem of the oil canning without the metal work. I also wonder if you could add some additional bracing on the underside to better support the long runs of unsupported metal. Thank you again for your efforts.
Filler will often tighten it up. But when I pushed it down, it was about 3/8 of an inch - too much for me to want to load up with filler. The passenger side was MUCH easier. I wish I had filmed that.
Great job. How do you know it`s staight without guide coat? Waiting till High build? also was that dolphin glaze at the end? Need to do the same thing on my nova. I hav ethe hog not the airfile which i am buying today lol
