      you obviously never saw him play then. Alfredo was something special. If he played today (same goes for George Best, Jimmy Johnstone, Denis Law etc) they would rip teams apart because forwards are heavily protected today. Back in the day forwards were kicked about the park!

    Agreed that football has evolved, but only because of players like Di Stefano.
    To anyone that says he's over-rated compared to modern players: Give Messi or Ronaldo one of those metric-ton weighing old school leather balls and see how fast they could dribble with one of those bad boys.
    Great modern players revere past legends for a reason. RIP to a trailblazer.

      Ferenc Puskas, also 5 Champions, what a player, commonly known for his extremely power shot and accuracy.

      @MrGuanaesantonio 8 лет назад +3

      He's not bad. The distinction you're observing is due to the weight of the ball. The ball was about 3 lb. heavier, that makes the game appear much different. Excepting conditioning of players, the major aspect of the game that has improved are defenses. However defenders in the day were no joke and stopped attackers with hard tackles. Di Stefano's skills would be equally as evident if he grew up in the modern era.

      @@Vil_Lama no, todays players couldnt play on those bad pitches, with heavy balls, heavy boots and defenders kicking and punching you all the time. what you guys don't understand when you compare old time players with the actual time players is that the ones of today, have much better training condition and equipment. Do you know how much heavier the ball was back then than it is today? Do you have any idea how uncomfortable the boots were those wearied by the soccer players in the past? If Di Stefano would have had to possibility to play today, he would have been regarded at least as high as he was regarded in his period and that just because the talent was there no matter when he would have projected to live. It was a very talented player and some opinion are considering him bigger than Pele. Helenio Herrera famously claimed that if Pele was the lead violinist, Di Stéfano was the entire orchestra, while Bobby Charlton, whose Manchester United team were knocked out of the European Cup by Real Madrid, remembers: ‘He totally controlled the game. Every time you looked , he had the ball. Everything happened around him. You looked at him and asked yourself: "how can I possibly stop him?"’ The answer, much of the time, was that you could not - and Di Stéfano knew it.

    • @FearsomeVoid
      @FearsomeVoid 9 лет назад

      He could play in today's Real Madrid team together with C. Ronaldo, Bale, James, Casillas. I'm sure he would be better than Benzema.

    • @cooldaddy2877
      @cooldaddy2877 4 года назад

      agree with you. Young folks today simply do not understand. Can you imagine trying to head on of those old wet leather balls? The rain made them even heavier. Messi and Ronaldo would have a heart attack just thinking about playing back then. He, along with Eusebio and Pele controlled games much more than Messi or Ronaldo do today. I was at De Stafanos testimonial game against Celtic in 1967 when Alfredos favourite player Jimmy Johnstone totally controlled the game.

    I don't think the word "overrated" can apply here in the first place. Especially as we're talking about the player of the times, when pr, commercials, tabloids etc were not a factor at all. the only criteria is what people think of him. Di Stefano has been DI STEFANO for 50+ years. This is an answer.

      A very good listing overall. I would certainly say that almost every player you have listed is among the best ever. Surely, every list is incomplete, and people will argue about the order, but is there really much difference between who is ranked fourth best vs. seventh best? They are/were all great. I could add a few all time greats like Lothar Matthaus, Carlos Alberto, et al, and some others like Javier Zanetti , Juergen Klinsmann, Rudi Voeller, et al. But overall, Safwan has come up with a comprehensive list that shows a good understanding of the game past and present.

    Alfredo Di Stefano is without any doubt one of the greatest players of all time right there with Pele, Best, Maradona, Eusebio, Puskas, Messi, Ronaldo, il Fenomeno and may others. It is highly ungrateful to compare players from different eras. Sure if Pele or Puskas get magically teleported to 21 century from time they played they would suck because well they would have a 50 year gap in technology, training programs and sports food and equipment advancement. You see in my book talent and hard work are forever and you just cant take that form any man on the other hand every other thing is a consequence of technological advancement and need to be put in perspective. So yes if they would come from the 50s they would suck just as Ronaldo and Messi would score 21322313 goals in season but in reality time traveling is impossible and that kind of logic is shitty. Like i said everything needs to be put in to perspective. If Di Stefano, Pele or any other great player was born in lets say 1989 they would have the same conditions like Messi, Ronaldo or any other modern footballer and there is no doubt in my mind that they would be among greatest footballers in the world. You see today footballers have perfect conditions for training they have whole teams of experts taking care of them and planing every little thing for them from training to food intake. Footballers today play with perfect and light balls in perfect kits and boots made especially for them unlike footballers in 50s who played with balls which would get soaked with water if there was rain and kits in which you where sweating like a pig. I remember one charity game in which players played in old kits and on half time half of players look like they will die from overheating and they could not wait to switch to their kits oh and did i forget to mention that boots from 50s where like military grade shoes today i know because i hold one pair in my own hands. Also to talk that football was not rough then as it is today is very stupid. Players where never more protected then today. If you do not belie In Di Stefanos time there was no red cards. If you want to see what is rough football i strongly suggest english football league games from 80s or football in that era overall. For the info Claudio Gentile fouled Maradona like 25 times in 1982 world cup game and after game he said that football is not for ballerinas now try imagine some one doing that today to Messi, Ronney or Ronaldo during the world cup in brazil yeah right there aint 25 fouls in games today. So that is when people say Ronaldo and Messi would score two millions goals in a season if they played in 50s i say no. To be honest Messi wouldn't even play football in 50s because he was born with a growth hormone defect so he would not grow above the size of the average hobbit and as for Ronaldo well he would be one of the best footballer in that era but he could not compare at any level with today's Ronaldo. The technology is advancing and people are learning more and more every day so in 50 years today's athletes will look to people from future like those from 50s look to us. Lets say that in 50 years some guy run 100 meters in 8.99 breaking a 9 seconds barrier will that mean that Usain Bolt sucked or that he was the fastest man on the planet in his era have in mind that i m talking teoretically here. I get sad when i see how people trash talk about athletes from history like they suck, they could not do shit today because those people sacrificed as much as any other athlete today if not more and they need to be respected. You see they had the same conditions like any other man from that time and they came on top just like guys today.

    Well, the ball was much heavier at the time and the game consequently slower. In my opinion, there is no best player, there is possibly a best number 10, why not ? But in which case, I prefere Baggio and Platini to others. The most skillfull, in which case no one can compete with Romario and Maradona, who could do the same thing with a ball or a can of coca-cola! Romario scored approximately the same number of goals than Pelé. You could also say that there are the best tacticians, in which case Baresi and Deschamps would probably be the best. I personnaly prefere Baggio, because at the time I was Young :), and I could appreciate the fact that I will never be able to do what he was doing with the ball, and never be able to have the vision of the game he had… He actually had a leg shorter than the other, and as a kid he was told that for this reason he would never play football, but he did and he was definitely the most elegant and in my opinion the best at many levels at the time. I also loved Vialli. Now, I love also Zidane, but Zidane was very slow, some people like that when it is slow, I prefere when it is a bit faster, with a better rythm. I suspect, it is like for everything, everyone is different :)
