I loved the USFL. I went to games. Saw many Gambler games. Jim Kelly was brilliant and a hero in Houston at a time when the Oilers really sucked. Trump ruined it. Yeah, I was pissed off back then when they folded.
Rooted for 2 different teams in the original USFL, the hapless Washington Federals for the first two seasons, then after they moved to Orlando, went to several Baltimore Stars games since they actually played their home games at the University of Maryland College Park at Byrd Stadium which was actually closer to DC than Baltimore, went to the USFL Championship game on a round motorcoach/game ticket to the Meadowlands for $45 from suburban Baltimore and saw them win it all, I have also a 1986 Fall USFL Baltimore Stars Season ticket brochure, where they located their headquarters to the old Colts training facility in Ownings Mills, which the Ravens used until One Winning Drive in Owings Mill was finished and now is the athletic department headquarters for Division 3 Stevenson University.
this? lol. this was like halfway through his legacy of failures. anything he built after trump towers was a failure. so if anything, he was not destined to do anything but be a glorified door man.
The USFL was moving upward, it was slow, there were stumbles, but the baby was learning to walk. Then Trump came in. Problem with Donald, and this is true in everything, is that he's never been a long-term strategist, he's always sought the immediate gain, not what he could gain 10 years from now. He decided the USFL needed to go head to head with the NFL immediately, and he did it in an arrogant heavy-handed effort to get in the NFL, and it cost him big time. There was a little bit more to the court issue of course, Trump has never been one to sit back and let the lawyers do what they know how to do, he needs to be the one in the Spotlight and to be seen as in Charge too much, he tried the case in the media and demanded the lawyers follow his orders, telling them to push tactics they knew wouldn't work, and alienated the jury, so while the jury agreed the NFL was monopolizing TV they weren't in any mood to be generous to Trump

What’s crazy is the USFL was successful at the one thing no other league has been able to achieve since: drafting top talent out of college and signing them to contracts. You can build a league around premier talent. It doesn’t matter if you have a better presentation (XFL), more action (Arena), or better locations (World League)…if you don’t have the talent, it doesn’t matter.
Yes. It is his fault. Did you listen to the interview? He swore to the other owners they are going to win this, they went all in and failed. Everything he touches turns to crap.
The Owners started by ignoring the Dixon plan and being overly ambitious, and that ambition led them to allow a Traitorous Snake in their midst and trusting of said snake
it's very simple. Though the jury found the NFL guilty of monopolizing television air time, they recognized that the USFL (encouraged or bullied by Trump) CHOSE to directly compete against the NFL rather that stick to their business model of Spring football, which faced little to zero disruption from the NFL.
@@kentallard8852 And due to it being an anti trust case damages were automatically trebled. So the final amount was $3.56(trebled damages and interest while the case was appealed)
This is a very "simpleton" explanation of the entire situation. The USFL would've died with or without Trump and anyone who doesn't believe that is clueless.
If you read the book you’d find out there was a plan for the USFL that was successful when teams employed that plan. Then Trump showed up and threw a bunch of money at guys and essentially ruined that plan.
It might have died off eventually, but Trump certainly accelerated its demise and screwed over all the other owners in the process. He ruined the value of the league's assets. Some of the teams could have been absorbed by the NFL, and the league could have been compensated generously in a buyout. Trump ruined all of that.
You’re wrong. Spring football had fans in the 1980s. The Denver Gold averaged 42,000 fans their first year in a loosing season. The Houston Gamblers drew more than the Houston Oilers at the time. The Dixon plan, followed somewhat to the letter would have succeeded. People wanted football year round.

@@donaldpaluga you're comparing apples to oranges. Arena league teams didn't go out and overpay for players. Not to mention, the AFL was never intended to compete with the NFL. It was a chance for players who may not be quite good enough to make an NFL roster and for aging veterans to play pro football for another year or 2.
