I very much enjoyed the video and am in the process of building a 4BTA at the moment. I saw the broken timing pin and while they do sell metal ones I still recommend the plastic one so if you do forget it just breaks the pin not the timing gear box. as for the reuse of the head bolts that blew my mind. than I remembered that cummins has a head bolt stretch guide that is intended to be used during the clean and inspect. otherwise you may be looking at a blown head gasket down the road. Keep up the good work. I would love to see how well it is running today.
@@ColtRice17 It's running good. Maybe some slight blow by. This was a cheap quick rebuild. We were just trying to get a few more years out of it. It's done that and more.
Looks good. I'm surprised the manual didn't call for replacing the head bolts with new ones since they are stretched. I can imagine why they make the timing pointer out of plastic ;)
+farmboy30117 We were going to get new head bolts but the manual just said clean and inspect. I imagine there are a lot of Cummins out there with broken timing pins :) You are suppose to find the TDC and then pull the pin out.
The torch and a vice grip would have worked just as easily to take out the bolt. You had enough sticking out to grab. Just did one yesterday. Didn't want to break out the welder and do the extra steps.
Did a 4bt and something felt off torking the head so I had to pull it out. Found a thread that stretched. It was 1/2 broke. It torked just didn't feel right always go with your gut
I just cleaned up the surfaces with a scuff pad on a little air tool. You want to be careful doing something like that so you don't grind metal off. I got a gasket kit from ebay.
+mossman381 Where did you learn to do the projects you do? I know being a farmer and owning your own equipment has to be part of it but with a project like this or the forklift or the body work, it seems like you have more of a formal training, or your just that good haha
It's an old Craftsman. I have since gotten a couple new ones. A Snap-On and a Craftsman. I wouldn't get any cheaper of a torque wrench than Craftsman. The no name brand wrenches are very cheap and I wouldn't trust them.
very true. I need to find a torque plus degree. I'll check with Napa if you have a better idea let me know. I need to do my "head" (combustion deck) on my Cummins as well. great video. Is your rebuild info on computer? where do I buy one. Thanks
Hate giving negative comments , but your not a mechanic in my books . Learn how to used a torque wrench , your suppose to grab with two hands and pull . Second you are using an extension where it throws out the foot pounds the longer the extension the worst it is . The correct way is hold the extension and pull on the torque wrench for a more accurate torque and if posible take away extension .
You are an idiot. A smooth pull with one hand will torque the same as if you have two hands on the wrench. I am standing on pallets with the engine still in the tractor. I don't weight 300lbs so had to use my other hand to keep myself upright. You can rarely torque something without having an extension of some sort. In a fantasy world you might be able to take away the extension every time you torque but this is the real world. There is always something in the way.
This guy must be a UTI grad. Untrained idiot. Only worked in a perfect world. Real mechanic has gut instinct from years of experience that over rules any book. Good job my friend
You on the home stretch now! Great work!!
+Rick Anderson Yes, it has been fired up. Video coming soon.

Thanks, it's still running. We have lost the 4wd on this tractor this winter. We think an axle has broke.
@@mossman381 oh man that sucks. No problems from the mismatched pistons?

@@mossman381 ok cool. Well keep up the videos.
Holy shit that's one hell of a maze to torch those bolts to! You should be happy it's not a 6bt Cummins!
+UnitCrane514 Yeah, I am glad this is only a 4cyl.
Ha my arms were getting sore just watching you :)
+Steve Rob Could have been worse. This is only a 4cyl.

LOL, I wonder how many have forgotten to do that!

Got my 4bt running today thanks again
Glad to hear that. This one is still going.
Good job getting the bolt out
+Bashafacein Joint effort by me and dad :)

I like to double check wen done go inline quick check and toque wench is extra long makes it easy
The intro... RIP Troy Gentry
We lost a good guy and a great duo.
how did you resurface the engine ? and the head? where did you get the gasket from ?
I just cleaned up the surfaces with a scuff pad on a little air tool. You want to be careful doing something like that so you don't grind metal off. I got a gasket kit from ebay.
can you tell me where you bought your service manual for your Cummins? Thanks
Ebay, manual on CD.
Why put oil on the threads of the head bolts? Why not anti seize or thread locker?
+Blake Budney Cummins doesn't want anti-seize or thread locker on the bolts, just clean motor oil.

is the rad cooling area dirty or is it the way it was videoed
+Ryan B. Radiator is dirty from oil leakage. Needs to be cleaned up.
Hey can you tell me who makes your torque wrench?

nice work. :) did u get any snow yet?
+MRJOHNDEERE3720. :) Thanks, just a dusting of snow.
mossman381
ur welcome. :) o ok same here.
Never put oil on your hd bolts...you can't compress a liquid.. a little lithium grease goes a long way. Nice work tho
Oil on the head bolts is what Cummins calls for. If you do it right you will have no issues.
it called tork to yield bolts
When will you be doing a meetup with all your fans?
+Randy Bobandy I don't feel I am a big enough channel to have a meet up. Maybe if I had 20-30k.
+mossman381 you have about 8850 more subs than me and I am considering doing a meet up. I'd be the only one there but that's all good :)
mossman i like the video
