My actual scenario years ago..... we had discussed retiring early and moving overseas for 20 years.
Me: "We have more than enough money invested and I am retiring next year and moving overseas".
Spouse: "I'm not sure that I am ready".
Me: "Next year I am retiring and moving overseas, would you like to come with me"?
    Spouse: "Yes"
Now the spouse is happy as could be, and the travels have continued for almost 20 years now.
Set your goals and do them. No excuses.

I like the idea of a compromise: traveling a few months, going home for a few months. I could see my husband and I taking that option and just renting an Air BNB when we're back home.

So funny when Julie said "say you live in Oregon"... LOL! That's where we live! My husband and I are 3 yrs out from retirement and throwing around the idea of testing the waters by doing 1-yr of travel throughout Europe, such as 3mos staying in anAibBnb in a few different counties to see how we like it. I'm reluctant to sell our home and get rid of everything without a dry-run first. Not sure how I'll feel leaving our son and grandson, also here in Oregon, but at least knowing it's only for 1-yr will make it easier. Thank you both as always, for another great video. You guys are a wealth of knowledge, and it's truly appreciated! We'd love to make it out to Montenegro at some point! The view from your home is breathtaking! Cheers! ❤

This video was just a bit of a spur of the moment for us and Oregon just popped into my head as I was speaking:)
I think you have a really fantastic plan. If you don’t have to sell the home to enjoy a year out, it’s the perfect solution to test the waters. Our biggest regret is having sold all real estate in the US, but that’s because it doubled in value in the past two years.
Best of luck 😊Thanks for watching. We appreciate the kind compliments.

My new husband and I plan on keeping one house and traveling multiple times per year, touching home base every couple months. He sees his son a couple times a year and I only see my family once a year. Visits to family can simply be another of many trips.

Thanks for this video! It encapsulates a number of issues we're facing as we look to retirement travel. We've decided to keep our paid off house - our daughter and another renter are living in it currently and to come back 3 times a year to see family. That's a solution that addresses my wife's concerns as we look to launch full time at the beginning of 2025. We'll be putting up videos of our adventures so please follow along.

Our one regret is not keeping at least one of the houses we had in Florida, but to be fair that is because the real estate market exploded from 2020 to 2023.
The house we sold more than doubled since we left.
I’m very glad to hear the video addresses mini issues.

Thanks for bringing up a very real topic that is discussed in many households with no easy amicable resolution. I am unfortunately one of them. I am sure i had mentioned in either your channel or elsewhere, my burning desire to spend a minimum of 2 years doing slow travel exploring Europe and my spouse not very open. We are just retired have no issue with Funds and have a very comfortable bandwidth to accomplish without a second thought. In the last 3 years we have taken 4 trips of 3 week duration (that's my wife's threshold time limit 🙃) to Lot of places in Italy (love it), Greece, Lisbon, Porto, Madeira, Brussels, London, Paris, Spain, Malaysia spending practically a week min in each place. The problem with doing 3 week trips is the flight each time, preparing for the flight etc. I like to buy a condo in Spain (in the Costa Del Sol area ) very affordable to call it my home base and shuffle between there and non Schengen, get a car, travel as much as you can doing slow travel. In my opinion as one gets older, its time to ditch all the worldly possessions accumulated (aka junk and hard to part with) minimalize, get out and enjoy for a year or two and may be come back to your original home in US. There is a saying "Man Proposes and God Disposes" - In every sense its true in real life!

Great video guys as always. Yes, both people need to be all in on this, it's a serious change in lifestyle. I few taster trips of a few months at a time should do enough to either convince the couple to do it or not. Keep the home, try it for a year, if you like it and don't need the home - go back and sell it. The best thing for us was the liberation of getting rid of all our stuff. Life is no longer stuff, it's experiences. Thanks again for bringing great content on this topic. So many people have the dream, yet so few can execute. This can help them.

My thought is if you have a home base overseas just save and offer to pay part of the adult children and grands travelonce a year . Some grands are old enough to spend summers with Grandparents while parents work. Gives them a different perspective and educational .
I face time my Grand and gonna plan on visit every other year . Who said the Grandparents have to do all the work . The adult kids are more likely to visit with financial support to do so especially in this economy if you can do so.

Thanks. I got a lot out of your video. I have had a burning desire to do something similar to you for probably 10 years. See the world, experience cultures, etc. We could easily slow travel on the rent we would get from our house. Just turned 60 and see options slowly slipping away. Will I regret not doing it in 15 years time, will this turn into resentment? My wife isn’t interested. We live a great life on the beach in Sydney. Children/grand children. Dogs are defacto kids (can’t travel with dogs from Australia-or more accurately can’t bring them back because of strict quarantine laws particularly in relation to rabies). So I live vicariously through you tube channels like yours….for the time being anyway.

This is such a difficult dilemma for so many people and we had no idea how many couples out there are dealing with this. From time to time we’ve received emails and numerous comments throughout different videos we’ve done, but there seems to be quite a lot of people in your position. There’s really no easy answer for it. I think a few people have some great ideas of doing some shorter jobs of a month as a test run for their spouse. Perhaps, the unwilling spouse will get the travel bug like many and realize what they’re missing out on or perhaps they’ll realize that they actually don’t appreciate the lifestyle. It’s always worth a try..
Best of luck to you. Thanks for watching. :)

Thanks so much for your response. I travel overseas with my wife once a year and by myself another time. She loves places like New York, Vancouver, Banff, Barcelona, Florence, Greek Islands, etc. so we do that together & her limit is 2 weeks before she has to be back with the kids/dogs/Australian lifestyle. I particularly love everywhere in SE Asia,& India, Sri Lanka, so I do that alone. Recently I went to Mexico and Peru. I know I’m very lucky to be able to do that and am grateful.
But in the end I see that as a couple of fun holidays and completely different to doing what you do. Completely different. I would love to and I have a strong yearning to slow travel the world for the next 10 years with a couple of weeks a year back in Australia for family reasons. But she doesn’t and as you say this difference in lifestyle perspectives/priorities is pretty common amongst your viewers. Given I love my wife I’m not sure there is an easy answer to it! You both seem to be on the same page which is great and lucky.

I would never sell the home I owned because you will never be able to buy back into that market. Particularly eastern seaboard in Australia.
I thank god I am single and I don't have to make these decisions.
You are no longer living with your children. And your grand children are not your children. In fact, they have their own very busy lives too.
Staying in touch today is easy. Microsoft Teams, Zoom, Mobile Phones, Whatsapp etc make contact so easy compared to even 10 or 20 years ago.

The point of this video is great… literally great. But having no children and the same being the case for my significant other, the bigger issue (I would say the threshold issue) seems to be, are both of you on the same page relative to what you want to do with the upcoming years of your life. If one wants to travel and the other wants to further build their career, and in order to do that the other is at least somewhat tied down in time and space to the location of that career, that is a real problem. And I would think there are countless variations on this fact pattern relative to when, where and how one of you wants to spend the relatively immediate future. So, at least to childless me, immediate family just isn’t that big of an issue. But, how much you are in sync with your partner’s desires, goals, etc., is the biggest issue. Though I guess for people who are so used to being around their family that it drives them nuts / leaves them longing to be away from them, that’s just their particular subset of my last statement.

    • @WarrenJulieTravel
      @WarrenJulieTravel  23 дня назад

I think there are many variations to this issue. We could certainly have gone on and on with this discussion, but we would lose viewers quickly.
It’s really a tough conundrum. It really is all about compromise.
Sometimes, people don’t realize the joys of traveling like this until they have tried. A career is important, but if it’s not essential for financial independence, it really comes down to compromise and giving up things in order to experience a completely different life.
      Thanks for watching:)
