I will NEVER forget this tragedy because not only I live around the area, my own BROTHER was supposed to go there with his friends. My mom got called to work the night shift last minute so he had no choice but to babysit me because I was too young to stay home alone at the time. Two of his friends died and one ended up paralyzed. 💔
I was there, the tickets were sold out, we ended up going to eat at tacos Tijuana on colfax and chambers and on our way home we didn’t understand why there was sooo much police presence in the area… such a tragic day
That’s wild. My sister had tickets to and she, but she and her (then) wife had a last minute change of plans. The next day they found out that they were having my niece.
The little girl was what broke me… she went in so excited and full of joy with her beautiful mama and, unbeknownst to her, a baby sibling. Instead, a cruel and senseless act from an equally cruel and senseless person took all that and more away from her and all the people she would’ve met growing up. Thank you Stephanie & team for bringing to light the names and lives of the victims. This is a celebration of their lives thus far, and how it had impacted those that they touched.
This episode made me cry especially when she was talking about how almost every victim who passed. Died protecting someone else. They were all heroes and May they rest in peace ❤️

Ik the girl who didn’t open the door is probably the most luckiest girl ever like thank god she decided not to open it, he’s disgusting for everything he’s ever done or tried to do.
His mistake was relying on a maybe instead of a certainty. If he were more social, or observant of his neighbours, he could've learnt a pet peeve of someone in there that would've guaranteed a reliable and consistent reaction. Say, if a neighbour couldn't handle bins being placed a certain way, and would always change them. I know that's very specific, but it's not as hard as you may think to find people that are VERY particular about one or two things. His misanthrope definitely had a part to play in this. But, I will admit, it was still extremely cunning.
Stephanie I'm so appreciative of the fact that you named all the victims and talked about each of them. It really just made me cry listening to the names of all these people who woke up that day living and ended their day unalived by a monster. I would like to point out though for people's knowledge that the US govt during this time bombed Iraq heavily and killed thousands of people. Which is sick because they use our mourning for such tragedies to kill people across the world.

As someone who knew some victims in a friend of a friend way and saw the killer a few times before all the horrible things he did, I would love to hear some more about it. Thank you in advance. I almost went with my bf at the time and my mom made me stay home that night. A lot of my high school friends went and my timeline was full of tickets covered in blood. AJ Boik was one of the classmates that passed away and he was such a kind and beautiful soul. He and his girlfriend La, had plans on buying a farm and adopt. I have never went back to that theater even though it was somewhere I went all the time. RIP AJ 🕊️

Condolences for your loss. Don't blame you for not wanting to go back to a theater after a loss like that. Just watching it on the news was super scary because until then it wasn't a place you would expect or rather has been a target of those kinds of mass murders.
I just love how you highlight and share the victims' lives and stories whenever possible. Watching the news at most you get a mentioning of their names, but the perpetrator got most of the attention... It is just a reminder about the people who were affected and those still struggling from the incident
I lived in Aurora when this happened. My sister was *THIS* close to becoming a victim of this event. She had tickets. She was going through a really turbulent, rebellious time in her teenage life. But thankfully she listened to my mom that night and didn't go out, she stayed at home. It felt and still feels so surreal. What felt even weirder is that I was attending the same university as the serial killer. All just too close to me and my family.

His apartment was like 5 blocks from my house and my sister also almost went to this screening, but by chance it was already sold out and she went to the next theater over! Her not returning my calls for those 2+ hours - while she watched the movie not knowing what had happened - was the worst 2.5 hours of my life!

The therapist not getting him admitted is crazy. I almost got admitted last month after accidentally getting a bad cut on my arm just because I have a history with attempting self exit 5-6 years ago.

I remember when this happened. I didn’t go to the movies for years afterwards. It is terrifying that a happy, safe place for people to gather can become one with casualties.

I can’t help but cry when you talk about the victims and how despite the pain and the pain of the family members they left behind, they live on trying to make our world a better place.
I was around 14-15 yrs old when this happened. My mom woke me up freaking out because my best friend said he was going to the midnight premiere. I called him and thank god he was at a different location. My family and I watched the news and were so scared because it’s 20 min from the house. Afterwards at school we talked about it and some classmates and their loved one were victims so we had counselors to talk to. I avoided the aurora mall and movie theater for years. I had gone once to the movie theater and it was completely different and honored those lost. Even now I get so scared to go to the movies and get anxiety. It’s sad how much Colorado has had to deal with.
Next December me and my mom are going to see the premiere of Sonic 3. Just a few weeks ago as I am typing this she had surgery, my stomach dropped at the thought of a mass shooting happening. While me and my mom are bonding, at the moment she’s the only person who I could open up to. I would feel so isolated if she didn’t survive…
my partner still has his ticket to this exact show time and theatre. his phone died so his best friend wasn't able to come pick him up and they both didn't go. he still will never go to a movie theatre again, it's horrific. we keep his ticket in a memory book that we don't open, understandably. he was a high school junior at the time, it's awful

i had to take a break around 30 minutes in (when she was talking about the 6 year old girl) because i was so sad. i teared up a little before that when she was talking about the other victims but that one made me cry
I live in Aurora and I have been going to that theater my whole life. My kids grew up to DC and Marvel movies, so the premier of Batman was a big deal. We actually left a family function to go to the premiere, but on the way there my husband and I got into an argument (thank God) and went straight home instead. We woke up to so many missed calls and messages from loved ones who thought we were in attendance. Not to mention my mother in law lived very close to the low life’s apartment and had to be evacuated because of the bomb threats. It took a very long time to visit that movie theater after that and I believe they haven’t show any Batman/high gun violence movies since then. Looking back I remember my kids being so upset and me feeling so bad that we were not going, but I thank God for that argument because it turned out to be the best argument I’ve ever had. Rest in paradise to all 12 innocent souls who lost their lives that night, while just trying to go to a really dope Batman movie. 🙏🏾
They didn’t lose their life, it was taken. I know it’s minor, but I think it’s important to keep the language on holding this monster accountable. He took those lives, they didn’t lose it.

My friends daughter and her boyfriend were in the first row. She lost a kidney and part of her leg. My other friend set up a go fund me and raised a few hundred thousand dollars. All the money was stolen by the victims bother and he has never been seen again. A police officer held her intestines in with his hand in the back seat of police car while they drove to hospital that was across the street. So devastating and you told the whole story well.
Coming back to this to comment that the cop that got that poor little girl out of the theater has been accused of r***/S.A. of his underage daughter, attempting to drown his son to death, and brutalizing a woman-amongst other things. It’s all true. What a tragic turn of events.

Listening to what the victims experienced and getting to know them is so much harder to take in, but they deserve recognition so much more than the killers who are trying ro make a name for themselves. My mind just keeps going back to the mother who lost her little girl while trying to shield her. The guilt and thought of “it should have been me” just makes the loss sting that much more. i wouldn’t be able to go on after that.
It’s crazy that I was committed for telling my doctor that if my pain didn’t stop I was going to end myself but they wouldn’t commit him for saying he wanted to kill people
yeh i told a doctor "I am not suicidal I am NOT suicidal, but i am worried my inactiveness will kill me" i was going thru depression. She committed me ... She was cruel from the start tho I was not in long they were confused i was there... Doctors go into Manchurian Mode when you say things like that.... They can't really do anything about saying you wanna harm people though which is definitely just weird. Is also tough for therapists because a troublesome amount of people say all the time they have really dark feelings.... it is tough to judge the difference and they simply do not have the capacity or reason to lock up every single person that says such things. But yeh is crazy how easy it is for a Doctor in a hospital to commit you for the slightest hint of self harm.

@@araceli2827 I listened to the same doc that you did. My whole point is that even within those parameters, it’s crazy. People get committed for a LOT less, it’s actually very rare that people get committed for having murderous thoughts because people don’t often admit to that, but people will be committed for the smallest things. Even with me, I didn’t have a target. It was a hypothetical. There was no plan. I just said IF this didn’t stop I would consider doing THAT. That’s not a concrete plan either. Yet the police are called to my house. I’m in Canada though. Maybe the parameters are different from state to state and country to country but up here if you express the desire to harm yourself OR anyone else, that’s grounds for it to be immediately reported to the police. I went to school for mental health and addiction/social service worker (dual diploma) and I don’t recall us ever being told that someone needed a specific target.
Stephanie, I live on the same street with the killer . He attended same school as my children went. I cried listening to all the details of the massacre. We do not know the family even though we live only few houses down from them. The parents sold their home and moved a way. It is heart wrenching to be reminded of this massacre again. I had two friends who had quite literally just graduated as surgical assistance. They hadn’t even started their jobs yet, but they got called into work because it was the Orlando pulse nightclub shooting. They said the floor of the surgical room was so soaked with blood by the end of the night that it was in their shoes.
As someone who grew up with trichotillomania, it’s BAFFLING to me that he didn’t care that he had it. I was bullied extensively for it. It’s a form of OCD. His intrusive thoughts about hurting others COULD indicate that too, but the fact that he didn’t care about them is what’s scary. He really, really needed help but it just seems he didn’t want it and that’s where this went wrong. What a devastating case.
True, even if he was getting therapy, I also don't think he was really committed to getting better, he is so full of himself that instead of dealing with his own shit and dark thoughts he went on to take other people's life as a way to make him feel like he was making his own life better

Their lives deserve to be talked about. I’m glad I got to hear about them and I’m devastated they’re gone. this hits TOO close to home. 3 days I went to the theater with my father to see The Dark Knight.. and the power went out. I couldn’t help but to start sobbing while my dad is trying to keep me calm as everyone’s is SCREAMING inside my theater. So many people were terrified of what was about to happen, but it was just the power. We were lucky, but still terrified.
I was 12 when the Aurora shooting happened and on the other side of the country. I didn't understand it that much so I never really thought about it. I went to see Deadpool a few weeks ago and there was someone who yelled, top of their voice, and it scared the shit outta me. I thought he was yelling at us and about to shoot or something. Everyone went dead silent too then chuckled nervously when he sat back down. Luckily it was just a drunk guy who yelled because he was dared to. But even here in New York all these years later people are still afraid.
I have an IQ of 130 and I've been depressed ... but I have never *ever* thought about mass shooting. Someone needed to teach this guy about Nash Equilibrium. It's been mathematically proven that when you do what is best for yourself AND the group, it's best for everyone, *including you*.

A friend of mine was facing intrusive thoughts due to ocd and a medication of doing harm to herself or others. She was so terrified of them she was panicking but she never had the slightest intention of harming others. Intrusive thoughts are actually quite common which is why there has to be a plan in place for a psychiatric hold.
I remember when this happened and to this day I still get anxious at theaters. Most recently during a movie someone walked in from one of the doors near the screen and my heart was racing.
Me too. I can never fully relax and enjoy the experience- I’m always watching the people coming/going during the film. It sucks to realize other people don’t even think about things like this while at the theater.

our campus had a shooting last winter and women continue to be assaulted regularly by men w/ weapons and they still refuse to close our campus to only students, hearing cases like this just shows how much we need new gun laws in place for people with mental disorders or issues, there shouldn’t be any victims at all to begin with.
mentally ill people can't own guns for at least 2 years so they're stealing someone's gun they know. Its not just keeping mentally ill away from guns but they should be so strict that if anyone they're related to and lives with shouldn't be able to either. Its way too easy to get a hold of, I get wanting it for self defense but it's not worth having when you have to keep it in a locked unbreakable case that takes forever to open in an actual dangerous event. Thank you for covering this. I was at a Dark Knight midnight premiere in California that night with some friends, and our parents saw headlines about the shooting while we were there. A lot of them didn’t specify where it occurred and our parents couldn’t get ahold of us so they were panicking. We didn’t find out about what had happened until we were out of the movie, and I had nightmares for days after that. I was 14 at the time and to this day I get anxious about being in movie theaters and can’t help but glance at the emergency exits periodically throughout any film I watch. I was really tired that night and ended up falling asleep to be woken up by bombs in the movie later. As soon as I heard about the shooting, I couldn’t get it out of my head that if I had been just a few states away, I may have woken up to the same noises in reality, or I may not have woken up at all. I’m amazed by the strength of all the survivors, being able to go back to any theater, let alone the same one where their lives were forever changed. I still think about the victims all the time, and I’m disgusted by the fact that it’s been 12 years and we still have to fear going to movies, concerts, and school in this country because nothing has changed when it comes to gun reform.
I had a similar experience. I went to a midnight showing in Chicago at Navy Pier and when we came out all we saw was Aurora being broadcasted on every TV in Navy Pier. We didn’t know if it was an isolated event or not. I just remember sobbing and being heart broken and petrified. It left a lasting impression on me as well.
I don't understand how someone who studies the brain can believe that taking a life will cure their depression. The length people with go-to in the name of "science" is baffling ( he's clearly mentally ill and is using science as an excuse for his deplorable actions). RIP to the victims. This was the first shooting to really impact me. It was two days prior to my 11th birthday. From this day, I was petrified of going to the movie theaters. I developed a kind of OCD where you obsess over your fears. This was the beginning of my unhealthy obsession of researching shootings. This translated over to school shootings specifically. I still research the things that I’m afraid of. I’m really glad I have you to make me feel a little bit less afraid.
I remember being so pissed off when the verdict was announced in this case. He doesn't deserve to live among other humans. His lack of respect for human life is one of the worst I've seen. He left all this carnage behind and was attempting to leave the scene without a care in the world. And his attempts to play insane in order to get away with his crimes were just disgusting. Bottom of the barrel type of being, I refuse to call that a human.
It's crazy how that monster went into that theater to carry out such an abhorrent and heinous act against innocent people claiming life doesn't matter so, theoretically speaking those peoples lives also dont matter. Yet he walked in and opened fire on a room that was filled with such amazing, honorable and heroic souls who did everything they could to protect and save each other. This story is so heartbreaking. Wishing nothing but love, healing and prayers to those lost and all those affected by such a senseless act.
Ever since this shooting happened, I've always felt a little nervous going into movie theaters even though I know it's likely nothing will happen. Having mass shootings so common here in the U.S. always makes being out in crowded places kinda unnerving because you never know. It sucks :(

Holmes did not have a timeframe or who the thoughts were told. To be involuntarily hospitalized, there is imminent risk. You had a method, person, plan. He did not disclose that therefore you can’t fit the legal requirements for involuntarily hospitalized
@@katiereilly8275 Maybe the point is, these requirements are inadequate, and they need to be evaluated and adjusted. He seemed to know exactly where the legal limits were, and was saying everything he could say without crossing them. He wanted her to "know" he was going to murder people, but not be able to prevent it. I'm not sure whether he sent her that package because he wanted to torture her with guilt over not being able to stop him, or because he knew she'd be so fame-hungry that she would write that book and build his "legend" for him. Either way, she can't claim she didn't know he was going to kill people one day, and that what she was doing with him was not working. He needed to be hospitalized. There was simply no legal way to get there, and there should be.

I wholeheartedly agree these standards for hospitalization are extremely inadequate. I was stunned learning it in class and questioned it to my professor as well. I definitely think there should a modification in the legislation about committing someone bc there are people who say vague things like this to avoid hospitalization. I do think it is important to use my therapeutic knowledge to inform others of the legal standard for involuntary hospitalization. Bc yes the psychiatrist was wrong for the book, but she legally couldn’t hospitalize him

These cases of random and sensless violence are always the most terrifying to me. It just shows that everybody can become a victim at any moment. I pray that no one ever has to experience something like this again and that everyone who has can heal from it.
I used to have a babysitter as a kid, I later found out that she happened to be in the exact room as the shooter. It broke my heart, thankfully her and her sister survived. But, her friend didn't, he died nobly shielding himself Infront of the girls saving their life. The girls's mother, after ginding out her daughters were in a mass shooting, ran outside and started screaming and sobbing at the top of her longs. I only found out about this recently and I cant imagine the pain they had to go through. Even though they had a tramatic situation happen to them, they are still on of the most caring people I have EVER met in my life.
I remember corpse husband retelling the story from one of the survivors. The little girl always gets me. I'm glad he can never walk free. I just wish that people weren't inspired by him afterwards. They really should keep their names out of the media and make it all about the victims.
This is one of the most heartbreaking videos. So many people were there with their families, friends, and partners. Watching your loved ones die in front of you protecting you has to be one of the toughest things to ever witness. My heart goes out to all of the victims.

In the United States, not in the world. I, as a Brazilian, am in favor of strict gun control. Much like in Japan. But even if you take into account the strange love Americans have with guns. Why any civilian would need a gun that is meant to shoot through a freaking TANK for "self defence"? Why Americans are so crazy as to think they need to allow any random madman to have access to THIS level of firepower (that can make someone shot with that thing to have to catch her own intestines from the ground) to "protect themselves"? THAT is something NON ONE in the rest of the world will ever be able to understand.
thank you so much for posting this tragic event Stephanie. i was born and raised in Colorado, Aurora specifically. i’ve always lived within 5 - 10 minutes of what was known at Century 16. i had just turned 11 at the time and my mother wanted to take us to the movie premiere. it was a last minute decision and we’d only be able to go if her check deposited in time. thankfully, her check didn’t deposit & we had no choice but to stay at home. to this day i believe everything happens for a reason. hearing the story on the news and seeing one of my schoolmates in the list of victims really changed my perspective on life. my mother and i visited the memorial the community created across the street quite frequently & throughout the days, it continued to grow and the amount of people who took their time to go and leave a poster or flowers or just to give their condolences was heart warming.
Yes my uncle almost went to century 16 theater that night and ended up going to the Chinese amc theater. But me and my dad were so scared because we didn’t know what one he went to after we heard the news so we were freaking out and calling him multiple times. He didn’t answer because the movie wasn’t over. I am so so lucky that he didn’t and you and your mom didn’t go to that theater. I wish you well and I always thank Stephanie for sharing these horrid stories.

Well, he passed up two theaters that allowed concealed carry and went in the first one that had posted no firearms allowed…that’s all you need to know about how to stop this crap from happening 😡

It still smelled of blood when it was reopened. Tickets were offered to see any film at any time and we were curious how the movie theater had been updated with “enhanced security” as they stated and loved movies so we were there on re-opening night and the following days. It was devastating.
i’ve been listening every week on apple podcasts for a little over a year now, and nothing, NOTHING has made me more sick and emotional than this case. i am a colorado native so idk if it just hit a little harder than most of the cases you cover, but i had to stop the pod multiple times bcz i was tearing up. i was about around 12 when this happened and ill always remember it like it was yesterday, thank you stephanie as always for doing such a good job researching this case!
When this happened, I had just graduated high school and my mom was terrified of letting me go to a movie theater for months, and I didn't want to either. I think it was about a year before I did and even now, I sit further back and plan escapes. I hope the victims and their families are doing a little better now, even though I know there's nothing that could truly fix trauma of this kind.

My cousin and her boyfriend were killed in a double homicide and suicide by my cousin's ex theyear before I was born. So both of them were always hypervigilant and this worried them a lot. It's genuinely not funny.
Because of violence like this, it is so scary to go out in public spaces, especially when you are to stay in a room filled with strangers in the dark, vulnerable, and not expecting anything. And then all of the sudden something could just happen like a mass shooting.
I have been watching you guys for years now....all the stories are heartbreaking BUT this one really has me 😢....I'm a mother of 2 young kids and I can't imagine these parents pain....I absolutely cry for all of the innocent people lost and their surviving family and friends....
I suffer from PTSD from being kidnapped at gun point and held for 17 hours by a stranger in LA at 22. I can NOT IMAGINE the PTSD not only the theater victims had but the brave police and EMT and nurses and doctors and staff. To overcome that level of trauma without succumbing to drug or alcohol abuse or suicide. ONE PERSONs anger or screwed up childhood or sociopathy or psychopathy or whatever DSM diagnosis or just horrible soul destroyed so many lives. The fact that anyone is pro assault rifles and someone able to get tear gas or guns without RIGOROUS investigations. Home. Mental health. Arrest history. Reason for the gun (farmers and people in rural communities who need it for protection against animals is one thing) but no one in a city needs an automatic or shot gun if no one else has guns to threaten you with. Women should be able to have a form of protection against men in some way but with no gun to threaten a woman with woman are already safer.
Sincerely hope you’re able to feel safe and happy as often as you can, and the ptsd moments are few and far between. I truly cannot imagine 17 hours. That’s such a long time, you’re so incredibly brave.
Its not a problem of guns, its already been shown time and time again that without them, evil people will still find another weapon to do evil things. We can't take away vehicles despite them being used against crowds, we can't take away knives because you need them to prepare food and just open up daily things, etc. You can't take away everything and safety proof the world. In UK and China there are m*ss stabb*ngs with similar vict*m counts. China in particular has an issue of adults taking knives to elementary schools to do similar things... The main problem we have in society is the lack of MENTAL HEALTHCARE and people are not properly educated on how to seek help for it. Right now people that "seek help" aren't given any (like this guy had repeat recent dr visits specifically about this). Care isn't even much help and its mainly about pill pushing now instead of healing experiences outside the box (like animal therapy or living out on a ranch living simply to experience life away from modern tech). Even committing someone isn't enough because there are no true asylums anymore and many people frankly have lifelong issues of idolizing v*olence. Sociopaths also have no hope of recovering and learning, they only learn to blend in better...
Don't blame the tool, blame the person. Its a men tal health cr-sis as a whole thats the core issue. People aren't getting help and just getting pills pushed on them instead of being taught healthy coping skills as kids to deal with stress.

I really admire how you humanize and focus on the victims and who THEY were. I cry multiple times but it’s worth getting to know the real people that were affected and honoring them.
Therapist in training here, thought I could shed light on the psychiatrist not committing him. Limits of confidentiality are very specific and very strict, and him saying he "wants to kill people" would fall under the limit of "harm to self or others," however in the ethical guidelines, threats of harm to others have to be SPECIFIC in order for a breach to be warranted. So if he said "I want to kill a bunch of people at the Aurora movie theatre next week," that would likely warrant reaching out to police. But because his statement was general and vague, this isn't viewed as sufficient for a breach or for forced commitment. I don't have a strong opinion on this psychiatrist but I wanted to share that her decision not to call police or commit him for that statement is by the book and "correct," so to speak.
Repeat again... Yes, she asked for details....and when he didn't answer. So there are 2 possibilities... 1. He had plans but didn't want to tell anyone 2. He really had no plans Isn't this the reason for caution?
so you psychiatrists go "Eh, he didn't say who he would kill so he isn't a threat"? Decisions like this have led to this incident!!! So your role is only restricted to protect your client lest the world burns who cares!? not your business right!!!

A soon to be licensed therapist here! If you are at imminent risk of hurting self or others, then you can be legally involuntarily hospitalized. He had no history of anything mental health related concerns. I highly recommend reading about involuntarily hospitalized. If you are a minor, your guardian can have you hospitalized. Regardless of if you are imminent risk or not, specific to SH. I work in a mental health facility that is inpatient. Many many patients are voluntary. If I was in a session and someone indicated a thought like I think about walking into traffic. That’s not grounds for hospitalization bc it’s passive. If they say I am going to leave this session and walk into traffic, that is imminent risk. There MUST be a timeframe this takes place and if there will be a victim. It’s the legality of it. I would be held liable if I let the person who says I’m going to leave and walk into traffic. I could not be held liable for the passive thoughts. This same principle applies to HI. There is a timeframe and specific individual(s) or place(s)
Also soon to be therapist! Wanted to add that privacy and "duty to warn" laws vary from state to state. There have been numerous legal cases involving the specific grounds for counselors legally breaking confidentiality with clients because of situations like this. Not defending anyone involved in this case but I think to someone without much understanding of how duty to warn laws work, the gray area here might not be as apparent. While a client expressing even a passive desire to kill people is def not a common issue and should raise alarms for any counselor, that kind of disclosure alone is not typically considered ethical grounds to break confidentiality. While it's heartbreaking to consider how a technical ethical violation may have saved lives in the long run, those protections are really important and a vast majority of the time, they exist solely to protect and build trust with vulnerable people looking for support.
Came to comments to see if someone had explained it, and it was you, a professional. I've been voluntary and involuntarily institutionalized for SI/addiction several times. I know if I'm just having fleeting thoughts, I'll be given a like week long/10 day long script for medications to help me and a referral to my primary care physician, which never works, because when you're in that state, you don't want people to know your true intentions or your timeline. I've been in a position where the place I was getting treatment at was ready to discharge me and I had to say out loud "I will follow through if you discharge me". I hate knowing this much about the process and what I should and shouldn't say to either stay or leave. I wish more places who take care of mentally ill patients would talk to them for more than five minutes. But there are legal issues and insurance issues and whatever other behind the scenes things that happen, on top of availability of doctors and resources about it all. It's hard to talk to someone you don't connect with, especially when you're paranoid or afraid.

I am currently interning at a mental health inpatient facility as a therapy intern. There are absolutely many individuals who should not be in our field and I am so sorry if you have met them before. It is so heart wrenching to be the therapist in situations like these too. I am experiencing that with a patient at the moment. My main and only priority when I see a patient is to build a trusting relationship in which they can express all of their feelings. My current patient is very similar to what you described. They just want to go home and are very closed off during our sessions. I am not sure what kind of therapist(s) you had that met you for like 5 minutes but where I am at, it’s a requirement (unless you’re under the age of 12) to meet with your patient(s) for at least an hour in individual therapy 3 days a week. I meet with my patient everyday I’m at the facility for an hour or so. However, behind the scenes, I am advocating for them for aftercare, discussing treatment progress, voicing concerns, calling soooo many people to learn more about my patient or help my patient for the future. I also complete a TON of paperwork. If I leave a voicemail? Have to document it. Everything lol. Some therapists are different but bc I’m an intern, I only have 1 patient caseload so that’s my only concern. I’m constantly thinking of ways to talk to my patient and make breakthroughs, but they are very much just doing what is “expected” of them. Unfortunately, the staff (psychiatrists mostly) are just trying to get the patient stable and discharge them with aftercare. So you see them for such a short period of time, I have to give them updates and inform them of what’s going on too. It can be an excellent system, but it can also be an awful experience sadly
My parents didn’t allow me and my siblings to watch movies with our friends for a while after this tragedy happened. They were terrified of the possibility that another psycho would do the same. It took them a while to let us go again, and I completely understood why. I hope the families of the victims and those who survived are healing properly. To those that were sadly killed, may their souls rest in peace and the hundreds of people who died of mass shooting as well.
When I was in school for counseling, the requirement to break confidentiality include: Must have an actual person in danger (named), must have a time and location set, and must have a means to do it which has been verbalized. Otherwise, you could have your license taken away and sued for break of confidentiality. it sucks so many things are needed to stop heartbreaking things from occurring.

I will NEVER forget this tragedy because not only I live around the area, my own BROTHER was supposed to go there with his friends. My mom got called to work the night shift last minute so he had no choice but to babysit me because I was too young to stay home alone at the time. That’s wild. My sister had tickets to and she, but she and her (then) wife had a last minute change of plans. The next day they found out that they were having my niece.

The little girl was what broke me… she went in so excited and full of joy with her beautiful mama and, unbeknownst to her, a baby sibling. Instead, a cruel and senseless act from an equally cruel and senseless person took all that and more away from her and all the people she would’ve met growing up.

His mistake was relying on a maybe instead of a certainty. If he were more social, or observant of his neighbours, he could've learnt a pet peeve of someone in there that would've guaranteed a reliable and consistent reaction. Say, if a neighbour couldn't handle bins being placed a certain way, and would always change them. I know that's very specific, but it's not as hard as you may think to find people that are VERY particular about one or two things.
His misanthrope definitely had a part to play in this. But, I will admit, it was still extremely cunning.

Stephanie I'm so appreciative of the fact that you named all the victims and talked about each of them. It really just made me cry listening to the names of all these people who woke up that day living and ended their day unalived by a monster. I would like to point out though for people's knowledge that the US govt during this time bombed Iraq heavily and killed thousands of people. Which is sick because they use our mourning for such tragedies to kill people across the world.

As someone who knew some victims in a friend of a friend way and saw the killer a few times before all the horrible things he did, I would love to hear some more about it. Thank you in advance.

I almost went with my bf at the time and my mom made me stay home that night. A lot of my high school friends went and my timeline was full of tickets covered in blood. AJ Boik was one of the classmates that passed away and he was such a kind and beautiful soul. He and his girlfriend La, had plans on buying a farm and adopt. I have never went back to that theater even though it was somewhere I went all the time. RIP AJ 🕊️

I just love how you highlight and share the victims' lives and stories whenever possible. Watching the news at most you get a mentioning of their names, but the perpetrator got most of the attention... Every victim died protecting their loved ones, they are heros and they will be missed.
I lived in Aurora when this happened. My sister was *THIS* close to becoming a victim of this event. She had tickets. She was going through a really turbulent, rebellious time in her teenage life. But thankfully she listened to my mom that night and didn't go out, she stayed at home. It felt and still feels so surreal. What felt even weirder is that I was attending the same university as the serial killer. All just too close to me and my family.

His apartment was like 5 blocks from my house and my sister also almost went to this screening, but by chance it was already sold out and she went to the next theater over!
Her not returning my calls for those 2+ hours - while she watched the movie not knowing what had happened - was the worst 2.5 hours of my life!

The therapist not getting him admitted is crazy. I almost got admitted last month after accidentally getting a bad cut on my arm just because I have a history with attempting self exit 5-6 years ago.

I remember when this happened. I didn’t go to the movies for years afterwards. It is terrifying that a happy, safe place for people to gather can become one with casualties.

I can’t help but cry when you talk about the victims and how despite the pain and the pain of the family members they left behind, they live on trying to make our world a better place.
I was around 14-15 yrs old when this happened. My mom woke me up freaking out because my best friend said he was going to the midnight premiere. I called him and thank god he was at a different location. My family and I watched the news and were so scared because it’s 20 min from the house. Afterwards at school we talked about it and some classmates and their loved one were victims so we had counselors to talk to. I avoided the aurora mall and movie theater for years. I had gone once to the movie theater and it was completely different and honored those lost. Even now I get so scared to go to the movies and get anxiety. It’s sad how much Colorado has had to deal with.
Have faith in Jesus and repent and turn to God to be saved.
Next December me and my mom are going to see the premiere of Sonic 3. Just a few weeks ago as I am typing this she had surgery, my stomach dropped at the thought of a mass shooting happening. While me and my mom are bonding, at the moment she’s the only person who I could open up to.

my partner still has his ticket to this exact show time and theatre. his phone died so his best friend wasn't able to come pick him up and they both didn't go. he still will never go to a movie theatre again, it's horrific. we keep his ticket in a memory book that we don't open, understandably. he was a high school junior at the time, it's awful

I live in Aurora and I have been going to that theater my whole life. My kids grew up to DC and Marvel movies, so the premier of Batman was a big deal. We actually left a family function to go to the premiere, but on the way there my husband and I got into an argument (thank God) and went straight home instead. We woke up to so many missed calls and messages from loved ones who thought we were in attendance. Not to mention my mother in law lived very close to the low life’s apartment and had to be evacuated because of the bomb threats. It took a very long time to visit that movie theater after that and I believe they haven’t show any Batman/high gun violence movies since then. Looking back I remember my kids being so upset and me feeling so bad that we were not going, but I thank God for that argument because it turned out to be the best argument I’ve ever had. Rest in paradise to all 12 innocent souls who lost their lives that night, while just trying to go to a really dope Batman movie. 🙏🏾

My friends daughter and her boyfriend were in the first row. She lost a kidney and part of her leg. My other friend set up a go fund me and raised a few hundred thousand dollars. All the money was stolen by the victims bother and he has never been seen again. A police officer held her intestines in with his hand in the back seat of police car while they drove to hospital that was across the street. So devastating and you told the whole story well.

Listening to what the victims experienced and getting to know them is so much harder to take in, but they deserve recognition so much more than the killers who are trying ro make a name for themselves. My mind just keeps going back to the mother who lost her little girl while trying to shield her. The guilt and thought of “it should have been me” just makes the loss sting that much more. i wouldn’t be able to go on after that.
It’s crazy that I was committed for telling my doctor that if my pain didn’t stop I was going to end myself but they wouldn’t commit him for saying he wanted to kill people
yeh i told a doctor "I am not suicidal I am NOT suicidal, but i am worried my inactiveness will kill me" i was going thru depression. She committed me ... She was cruel from the start tho I was not in long they were confused i was there... Doctors go into Manchurian Mode when you say things like that.... They can't really do anything about saying you wanna harm people though which is definitely just weird. Is also tough for therapists because a troublesome amount of people say all the time they have really dark feelings.... it is tough to judge the difference and they simply do not have the capacity or reason to lock up every single person that says such things. But yeh is crazy how easy it is for a Doctor in a hospital to commit you for the slightest hint of self harm.

@@araceli2827 I listened to the same doc that you did. My whole point is that even within those parameters, it’s crazy. People get committed for a LOT less, it’s actually very rare that people get committed for having murderous thoughts because people don’t often admit to that, but people will be committed for the smallest things.
Even with me, I didn’t have a target. It was a hypothetical. There was no plan. I just said IF this didn’t stop I would consider doing THAT. That’s not a concrete plan either. Yet the police are called to my house.
I’m in Canada though. Maybe the parameters are different from state to state and country to country but up here if you express the desire to harm yourself OR anyone else, that’s grounds for it to be immediately reported to the police. I went to school for mental health and addiction/social service worker (dual diploma) and I don’t recall us ever being told that someone needed a specific target.
Stephanie, I live on the same street with the killer . He attended same school as my children went. I cried listening to all the details of the massacre. We do not know the family even though we live only few houses down from them. The parents sold their home and moved a way. It is heart wrenching to be reminded of this massacre again. They hadn’t even started their jobs yet, but they got called into work because it was the Orlando pulse nightclub shooting. They said the floor of the surgical room was so soaked with blood by the end of the night that it was in their shoes.

As someone who grew up with trichotillomania, it’s BAFFLING to me that he didn’t care that he had it. I was bullied extensively for it. It’s a form of OCD. His intrusive thoughts about hurting others COULD indicate that too, but the fact that he didn’t care about them is what’s scary. He really, really needed help but it just seems he didn’t want it and that’s where this went wrong. What a devastating case.
It boils down to he is so full of himself that he doesn't care what anyone else thinks.
True, even if he was getting therapy, I also don't think he was really committed to getting better, he is so full of himself that instead of dealing with his own shit and dark thoughts he went on to take other people's life as a way to make him feel like he was making his own life better

Their lives deserve to be talked about. I’m glad I got to hear about them and I’m devastated they’re gone. I was 12 when the Aurora shooting happened and on the other side of the country. I didn't understand it that much so I never really thought about it.
I went to see Deadpool a few weeks ago and there was someone who yelled, top of their voice, and it scared the shit outta me. I thought he was yelling at us and about to shoot or something. Everyone went dead silent too then chuckled nervously when he sat back down. Luckily it was just a drunk guy who yelled because he was dared to. But even here in New York all these years later people are still afraid.

A friend of mine was facing intrusive thoughts due to ocd and a medication of doing harm to herself or others. She was so terrified of them she was panicking but she never had the slightest intention of harming others. Intrusive thoughts are actually quite common which is why there has to be a plan in place for a psychiatric hold.

Me too. I can never fully relax and enjoy the experience- I’m always watching the people coming/going during the film. It sucks to realize other people don’t even think about things like this while at the theater.

our campus had a shooting last winter and women continue to be assaulted regularly by men w/ weapons and they still refuse to close our campus to only students, hearing cases like this just shows how much we need new gun laws in place for people with mental disorders or issues, there shouldn’t be any victims at all to begin with.

Thank you for covering this. I was at a Dark Knight midnight premiere in California that night with some friends, and our parents saw headlines about the shooting while we were there. A lot of them didn’t specify where it occurred and our parents couldn’t get ahold of us so they were panicking. We didn’t find out about what had happened until we were out of the movie, and I had nightmares for days after that. I was 14 at the time and to this day I get anxious about being in movie theaters and can’t help but glance at the emergency exits periodically throughout any film I watch. I was really tired that night and ended up falling asleep to be woken up by bombs in the movie later. As soon as I heard about the shooting, I couldn’t get it out of my head that if I had been just a few states away, I may have woken up to the same noises in reality, or I may not have woken up at all. I’m amazed by the strength of all the survivors, being able to go back to any theater, let alone the same one where their lives were forever changed. I still think about the victims all the time, and I’m disgusted by the fact that it’s been 12 years and we still have to fear going to movies, concerts, and school in this country because nothing has changed when it comes to gun reform.
I had a similar experience. I went to a midnight showing in Chicago at Navy Pier and when we came out all we saw was Aurora being broadcasted on every TV in Navy Pier. We didn’t know if it was an isolated event or not. I just remember sobbing and being heart broken and petrified. It left a lasting impression on me as well.
I don't understand how someone who studies the brain can believe that taking a life will cure their depression. The length people with go-to in the name of "science" is baffling ( he's clearly mentally ill and is using science as an excuse for his deplorable actions). RIP to the victims. This was the first shooting to really impact me. It was two days prior to my 11th birthday. From this day, I was petrified of going to the movie theaters. I developed a kind of OCD where you obsess over your fears. This was the beginning of my unhealthy obsession of researching shootings. This translated over to school shootings specifically. I still research the things that I’m afraid of. I’m really glad I have you to make me feel a little bit less afraid.
I remember being so pissed off when the verdict was announced in this case. He doesn't deserve to live among other humans. His lack of respect for human life is one of the worst I've seen. He left all this carnage behind and was attempting to leave the scene without a care in the world. And his attempts to play insane in order to get away with his crimes were just disgusting. Bottom of the barrel type of being, I refuse to call that a human.
It's crazy how that monster went into that theater to carry out such an abhorrent and heinous act against innocent people claiming life doesn't matter so, theoretically speaking those peoples lives also dont matter. Yet he walked in and opened fire on a room that was filled with such amazing, honorable and heroic souls who did everything they could to protect and save each other. This story is so heartbreaking. Wishing nothing but love, healing and prayers to those lost and all those affected by such a senseless act.
Ever since this shooting happened, I've always felt a little nervous going into movie theaters even though I know it's likely nothing will happen. Having mass shootings so common here in the U.S. always makes being out in crowded places kinda unnerving because you never know. It sucks :(

He seemed to know exactly where the legal limits were, and was saying everything he could say without crossing them. He wanted her to "know" he was going to murder people, but not be able to prevent it. I'm not sure whether he sent her that package because he wanted to torture her with guilt over not being able to stop him, or because he knew she'd be so fame-hungry that she would write that book and build his "legend" for him. Either way, she can't claim she didn't know he was going to kill people one day, and that what she was doing with him was not working. He needed to be hospitalized. There was simply no legal way to get there, and there should be.

I wholeheartedly agree these standards for hospitalization are extremely inadequate. I was stunned learning it in class and questioned it to my professor as well. I definitely think there should a modification in the legislation about committing someone bc there are people who say vague things like this to avoid hospitalization. I do think it is important to use my therapeutic knowledge to inform others of the legal standard for involuntary hospitalization. Bc yes the psychiatrist was wrong for the book, but she legally couldn’t hospitalize him

These cases of random and sensless violence are always the most terrifying to me. It just shows that everybody can become a victim at any moment. I pray that no one ever has to experience something like this again and that everyone who has can heal from it.
I used to have a babysitter as a kid, I later found out that she happened to be in the exact room as the shooter. It broke my heart, thankfully her and her sister survived. But, her friend didn't, he died nobly shielding himself Infront of the girls saving their life. The girls's mother, after ginding out her daughters were in a mass shooting, ran outside and started screaming and sobbing at the top of her longs. I only found out about this recently and I cant imagine the pain they had to go through. Even though they had a tramatic situation happen to them, they are still on of the most caring people I have EVER met in my life.
I remember corpse husband retelling the story from one of the survivors. The little girl always gets me.
I'm glad he can never walk free. I just wish that people weren't inspired by him afterwards. They really should keep their names out of the media and make it all about the victims.
This is one of the most heartbreaking videos. So many people were there with their families, friends, and partners. Watching your loved ones die in front of you protecting you has to be one of the toughest things to ever witness. My heart goes out to all of the victims.

I, as a Brazilian, am in favor of strict gun control. Much like in Japan. But even if you take into account the strange love Americans have with guns. Why any civilian would need a gun that is meant to shoot through a freaking TANK for "self defence"? Why Americans are so crazy as to think they need to allow any random madman to have access to THIS level of firepower (that can make someone shot with that thing to have to catch her own intestines from the ground) to "protect themselves"? THAT is something NON ONE in the rest of the world will ever be able to understand.
thank you so much for posting this tragic event Stephanie. i was born and raised in Colorado, Aurora specifically. i’ve always lived within 5 - 10 minutes of what was known at Century 16. i had just turned 11 at the time and my mother wanted to take us to the movie premiere. it was a last minute decision and we’d only be able to go if her check deposited in time. thankfully, her check didn’t deposit & we had no choice but to stay at home. to this day i believe everything happens for a reason. hearing the story on the news and seeing one of my schoolmates in the list of victims really changed my perspective on life. my mother and i visited the memorial the community created across the street quite frequently & throughout the days, it continued to grow and the amount of people who took their time to go and leave a poster or flowers or just to give their condolences was heart warming.
Yes my uncle almost went to century 16 theater that night and ended up going to the Chinese amc theater. But me and my dad were so scared because we didn’t know what one he went to after we heard the news so we were freaking out and calling him multiple times. He didn’t answer because the movie wasn’t over. I am so so lucky that he didn’t and you and your mom didn’t go to that theater. I wish you well and I always thank Stephanie for sharing these horrid stories.
I have seen 4 different podcast/true crime on this case. All were extremely in depth. Well done for presenting information that i hadn’t learned yet and in an engaging manner.

It still smelled of blood when it was reopened. Tickets were offered to see any film at any time and we were curious how the movie theater had been updated with “enhanced security” as they stated and loved movies so we were there on re-opening night and the following days. It was devastating.

i’ve been listening every week on apple podcasts for a little over a year now, and nothing, NOTHING has made me more sick and emotional than this case. i am a colorado native so idk if it just hit a little harder than most of the cases you cover, but i had to stop the pod multiple times bcz i was tearing up. i was about around 12 when this happened and ill always remember it like it was yesterday, thank you stephanie as always for doing such a good job researching this case!
When this happened, I had just graduated high school and my mom was terrified of letting me go to a movie theater for months, and I didn't want to either. I think it was about a year before I did and even now, I sit further back and plan escapes. I hope the victims and their families are doing a little better now, even though I know there's nothing that could truly fix trauma of this kind.

My cousin and her boyfriend were killed in a double homicide and suicide by my cousin's ex theyear before I was born. So both of them were always hypervigilant and this worried them a lot. It's genuinely not funny.
Me too. I don’t think I’ll ever enjoy going to the movies as much as other people do, as I’m still quite on edge while in the theater.
I can’t go to a movie without thinking about this one either. I think this is the case for a lot of people in the US.

Because of violence like this, it is so scary to go out in public spaces, especially when you are to stay in a room filled with strangers in the dark, vulnerable, and not expecting anything. And then all of the sudden something could just happen like a mass shooting.
I have been watching you guys for years now....all the stories are heartbreaking BUT this one really has me 😢....I'm a mother of 2 young kids and I can't imagine these parents pain....I absolutely cry for all of the innocent people lost and their surviving family and friends....
I suffer from PTSD from being kidnapped at gun point and held for 17 hours by a stranger in LA at 22. I can NOT IMAGINE the PTSD not only the theater victims had but the brave police and EMT and nurses and doctors and staff. To overcome that level of trauma without succumbing to drug or alcohol abuse or suicide.
ONE PERSONs anger or screwed up childhood or sociopathy or psychopathy or whatever DSM diagnosis or just horrible soul destroyed so many lives.
The fact that anyone is pro assault rifles and someone able to get tear gas or guns without RIGOROUS investigations. Home. Mental health. Arrest history. Reason for the gun (farmers and people in rural communities who need it for protection against animals is one thing) but no one in a city needs an automatic or shot gun if no one else has guns to threaten you with.
Women should be able to have a form of protection against men in some way but with no gun to threaten a woman with woman are already safer.
Sincerely hope you’re able to feel safe and happy as often as you can, and the ptsd moments are few and far between. I truly cannot imagine 17 hours. That’s such a long time, you’re so incredibly brave.

Its not a problem of guns, its already been shown time and time again that without them, evil people will still find another weapon to do evil things. We can't take away vehicles despite them being used against crowds, we can't take away knives because you need them to prepare food and just open up daily things, etc. You can't take away everything and safety proof the world. In UK and China there are m*ss stabb*ngs with similar vict*m counts. China in particular has an issue of adults taking knives to elementary schools to do similar things...
The main problem we have in society is the lack of MENTAL HEALTHCARE and people are not properly educated on how to seek help for it. Right now people that "seek help" aren't given any (like this guy had repeat recent dr visits specifically about this). Care isn't even much help and its mainly about pill pushing now instead of healing experiences outside the box (like animal therapy or living out on a ranch living simply to experience life away from modern tech). Even committing someone isn't enough because there are no true asylums anymore and many people frankly have lifelong issues of idolizing v*olence. Sociopaths also have no hope of recovering and learning, they only learn to blend in better...
Don't blame the tool, blame the person. Its a men tal health cr-sis as a whole thats the core issue. People aren't getting help and just getting pills pushed on them instead of being taught healthy coping skills as kids to deal with stress.

I really admire how you humanize and focus on the victims and who THEY were. I cry multiple times but it’s worth getting to know the real people that were affected and honoring them.
Therapist in training here, thought I could shed light on the psychiatrist not committing him. Limits of confidentiality are very specific and very strict, and him saying he "wants to kill people" would fall under the limit of "harm to self or others," however in the ethical guidelines, threats of harm to others have to be SPECIFIC in order for a breach to be warranted. So if he said "I want to kill a bunch of people at the Aurora movie theatre next week," that would likely warrant reaching out to police. But because his statement was general and vague, this isn't viewed as sufficient for a breach or for forced commitment. I don't have a strong opinion on this psychiatrist but I wanted to share that her decision not to call police or commit him for that statement is by the book and "correct," so to speak.
Repeat again... Yes, she asked for details....and when he didn't answer.
So there are 2 possibilities...
1. He had plans but didn't want to tell anyone
2. He really had no plans

A soon to be licensed therapist here! If you are at imminent risk of hurting self or others, then you can be legally involuntarily hospitalized. He had no history of anything mental health related concerns. I highly recommend reading about involuntarily hospitalized. If you are a minor, your guardian can have you hospitalized. Regardless of if you are imminent risk or not, specific to SH. I work in a mental health facility that is inpatient. Many many patients are voluntary. If I was in a session and someone indicated a thought like I think about walking into traffic. That’s not grounds for hospitalization bc it’s passive. If they say I am going to leave this session and walk into traffic, that is imminent risk. There MUST be a timeframe this takes place and if there will be a victim. It’s the legality of it. I would be held liable if I let the person who says I’m going to leave and walk into traffic. I could not be held liable for the passive thoughts. This same principle applies to HI. There is a timeframe and specific individual(s) or place(s)
Also soon to be therapist! Wanted to add that privacy and "duty to warn" laws vary from state to state. There have been numerous legal cases involving the specific grounds for counselors legally breaking confidentiality with clients because of situations like this. Not defending anyone involved in this case but I think to someone without much understanding of how duty to warn laws work, the gray area here might not be as apparent. While a client expressing even a passive desire to kill people is def not a common issue and should raise alarms for any counselor, that kind of disclosure alone is not typically considered ethical grounds to break confidentiality. While it's heartbreaking to consider how a technical ethical violation may have saved lives in the long run, those protections are really important and a vast majority of the time, they exist solely to protect and build trust with vulnerable people looking for support.
Came to comments to see if someone had explained it, and it was you, a professional. I've been voluntary and involuntarily institutionalized for SI/addiction several times. I know if I'm just having fleeting thoughts, I'll be given a like week long/10 day long script for medications to help me and a referral to my primary care physician, which never works, because when you're in that state, you don't want people to know your true intentions or your timeline. I've been in a position where the place I was getting treatment at was ready to discharge me and I had to say out loud "I will follow through if you discharge me".
I hate knowing this much about the process and what I should and shouldn't say to either stay or leave. I wish more places who take care of mentally ill patients would talk to them for more than five minutes. But there are legal issues and insurance issues and whatever other behind the scenes things that happen, on top of availability of doctors and resources about it all. It's hard to talk to someone you don't connect with, especially when you're paranoid or afraid.

It's not easy to just take away someone's freedom and lock them away. People don't understand that is a blessing, but also some may get through the cracks.

@@kbundyy22 thank you for sharing your experiences and struggles. I truly hope you are healing, safe, and healthy. I am so sorry you have had/are to go through this. I am currently interning at a mental health inpatient facility as a therapy intern. There are absolutely many individuals who should not be in our field and I am so sorry if you have met them before. It is so heart wrenching to be the therapist in situations like these too. I am experiencing that with a patient at the moment. My main and only priority when I see a patient is to build a trusting relationship in which they can express all of their feelings. My current patient is very similar to what you described. They just want to go home and are very closed off during our sessions. I am not sure what kind of therapist(s) you had that met you for like 5 minutes but where I am at, it’s a requirement (unless you’re under the age of 12) to meet with your patient(s) for at least an hour in individual therapy 3 days a week. I meet with my patient everyday I’m at the facility for an hour or so. However, behind the scenes, I am advocating for them for aftercare, discussing treatment progress, voicing concerns, calling soooo many people to learn more about my patient or help my patient for the future. I also complete a TON of paperwork. If I leave a voicemail? Have to document it. Everything lol. Some therapists are different but bc I’m an intern, I only have 1 patient caseload so that’s my only concern. I’m constantly thinking of ways to talk to my patient and make breakthroughs, but they are very much just doing what is “expected” of them. Unfortunately, the staff (psychiatrists mostly) are just trying to get the patient stable and discharge them with aftercare. So you see them for such a short period of time, I have to give them updates and inform them of what’s going on too. It can be an excellent system, but it can also be an awful experience sadly
My parents didn’t allow me and my siblings to watch movies with our friends for a while after this tragedy happened. They were terrified of the possibility that another psycho would do the same. It took them a while to let us go again, and I completely understood why. I hope the families of the victims and those who survived are healing properly. To those that were sadly killed, may their souls rest in peace and the hundreds of people who died of mass shooting as well.
When I was in school for counseling, the requirement to break confidentiality include: Must have an actual person in danger (named), must have a time and location set, and must have a means to do it which has been verbalized. Otherwise, you could have your license taken away and sued for break of confidentiality. it sucks so many things are needed to stop heartbreaking things from occurring.
