  • Where did George go when the Spahn Ranch Burned in 1970?
Tour of the Spahn Ranch and the History of George Spahn. Charles Manson and the Family lived on the ranch in 1969 when Helter Skelter, the Tate LaBianca Murders were carried out. Donald "Shorty" Shea was murdered on the property a few weeks later.
Clayton Moore, the Lone Ranger, recounts a sinister visit with George Spahn and coming face to face with Charles Manson.
The Ranch was burned in 1970 in the Clampitt Fire in Topanga Canyon. George Spahn moved to a ranch in North Hollywood and died in 1974.
George was portrayed by Bruce Dern in the Quentin Tarantino film Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.

My dad used to tell me these two Manson stories. At that time. My dad was a young M.D. working at Canoga Park Hospital (now called West Hills Hospital) and West Park Hospital. Now, my dad was about 6'5" and a combat WW2 Vet. Nothing scared him. Until his visit to Spahn Ranch. But first let me back up a bit. One night when it was his turn to be the overnight doc at the West Park Hospital ER. One of the nurses came to him to see if he could get some druggie out of the hospital's trash bin. Back then hospitals threw out used needles and did not put them in sharps containers. Nice , I know. So, out comes my dad. with a flashlight and sure enough there was a scraggly little dude rummaging around and collecting needles and syringes. Dad yelled at the guy and guess who it was? Charles Manson. So, Charlie got out and started yelling at him. Until he looked up and like the coward he was. He ran off screaming four lettered words and how he was going to get his revenge. yadda yadda yadda. Flash forward 3 to 4 months later a girl from Chatsworth comes into the Canoga Park ER with a broken leg. He set and plastered it and never thought anything of it. Flash forward a month later or so land he is on call and back then Docs made house calls. He was charged with driving up to the Spahn Ranch and remove the cast. As my dad puts it. As he was driving into the old wild west set and seeing these disheveled and dirty people peering at him through broken windows and the smell of human waste was strong to say the least. He said that he never was so scared in his life as he got out. Charlie was in the door way staring at him and at a point Charlie remembered who my dad was. His face went tense and anger covered his face as his drew back into the shadows of the building. My dad got his stuff and as he said it. He performed the worlds fastest cast removal. He didnt even bother with the paperwork. He got the hell out of there......I always asked why we never moved to Chatworth. I think that was the reason.

Yeah, he ended up having a 45 yr career at West Hills. He had tons of crazy stories like the time that Steve Garvey and his wife has had a massive fight in his medical office or when Adam Rich from Eight is Enough broke into his office to steal his prescription pads and tried to fake his signature for hard prescription drugs........and lots more...Enough for a book. I always told him He could make millions from the stuff that happened to him. But HIPPA rules would probably prevent it from being published.@@TheMelamia

So family "fun" fact. My moms first husband (I'm from her 2nd marriage) remarried after he and my mom split, but my mom and him stayed relatively close because they'd had 5 kids together. One year in my early 20s we were all invited to his house for Thanksgiving and there's a guy sitting in front of the fireplace playing an acoustic guitar. My sister cones up and whispers to me that he was Steve Grogan aka Clem, who was convicted of murdering "Shorty" Shea. My mom's first husband had married his sister. Apparently she used to play on Spahn Ranch as a kid when he'd bring her there. He was really quiet and I honestly dont remember him saying anything, just played his guitar. It was very bizarre. My family's claim to fame?

Hi Scott, I was wondering if you have ever looked into another Hollywood area cult called the source family and Father Yod? The guy opened a health food cafe that lots of actors patronized. Father Yod was killed in a hang gliding accident. Everyone in the group took on a name and they used Aquarian as their last name. I wondered if any of them had any connection with Manson and his group. I think they did cause there is an old guy who recently died who was using the Aquarian last name I think he had been involved with the death of the Manson follower known as Zero , who died in a house near Venice California supposedly from playing Russian roulette. What do you know about them?

Thanks for another video of Spahn ranch, Scott. I know you've been there before, with Six Degrees of Helter Skelter, but it's always fun to get another look & perspective. In 1969, I lived in Fresno, but I had three sister cousins who lived in Northridge. I didn't talk to them about Manson at the time, but asked one of them awhile back, if they had ever visited Spahn ranch around that time, and they said yes. They had stopped to look at the horses, and someone there identified the place as where Charles Manson lived. Their visit was otherwise uneventful. In later years, they had attended the Church at Rocky Peak, across the road. In 1976 I was living in LA and drove by the site for a quick look, but didn't have time to walk onto the property. Wish I had.

I was 13 when this was going on, we were living in Chatsworth right off Plummer and Tampa Ave. All of LA was in a frenzy after 2 consecutive nights of butchery. You couldn't find a guard dog, or a firearm for sale anywhere in the city. Now let's backtrack, being a junior high schooler, we used to go up in the hills above Chatsworth Park and stoney point off of Topanga Canyon and Santa Suzanna Pass. Which was also above Spahn Ranch. We'd be up there with about 25 or 30 friends and classmates playing Army, and hunting each other down. It started with us throwing rocks, then we went to wrist rocket slingshots, then to BB and pellet rifles, and eventually we were up there shooting at one another with 22 rifles. We used to see those Hippies, and they saw us and avoided us like the plague, they thought we were nuts, and I believe they were right. Manson even told us, you guys is nuts. Makes me laugh when I think about it, Manson calling me and my friends NUTS. Both Manson and his group, were scared to death of our group, and we didn't think twice about them. We had no idea what they were really up to. If they fooled around with us they would have got murked. I used to see George Spahn all the time at a restaurant called Harvey's, was located at DeSoto and Nordoff, long gone, my mother was a hostess there. Excellent food there BTW. so like I said earlier, all of LA was shaking in its boots, and unbeknownst to me and my friends we had the real killer's shi**ing in their pants in the hills above Topanga Canyon California.

One more thing, they used to make 90 percent of the old Westerns in Chatsworth, only a few were made at Spahn Ranch. The majority were made at a section of Chatsworth called Cooganville. There was no Simi Valley then, I remember when they dynamited that part of Santa Susanna Pass, when they were putting the Freeway through to what would be Simi Valley. They also made Westerns at Porter Ranch, which was a large section of private property smack dab in the middle of Chatsworth. Also made a few at the old Devonshire Downs, which used to be the county fairgrounds. Now it's Cal State Northridge. Remember a 3 day concert there at Devonshire Downs back in 68, it was called Sunkist 68 and man it rivaled Woodstock, happened the year before Woodstock. All the top names in rock played there, and some nuts in the crowd were firing rockets at the police helicopters. Front page news. Like I said 3 day event, and pretty much the whole town of Northridge was trashed 🗑 garbage as far as the eye can see...

You would be imagining wrong, there was a bunch of us in the valley, and all over LA in general.
They made about 75 percent of the old Westerns in Chatsworth, and Cooganville, which is part of Chatsworth. Horse ranches everywhere, Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz had a Horse ranch there, also Jimmy Cagney raised Clydesdale Horses in Granada Hills. Old Western actor Jack Oakie had a Ranch in Chatsworth, as did Dale Robertson and Chad Everett. They made alot of movies there, and not just Westerns, they made the majority of porno films there as well going back to when I was in grammar school. Remember when I was in junior high, we'd have to walk by the porno King's mansion, which was by the school located at Lassen and Tampa Ave. That mansion was surrounded by a huge wall, you could barely see the house from the road. But growing up in Chatsworth, the thing I miss most is the old Orange Groves, they were all over, now they're all gone. There was a giant one a little more than a block from our house, in the Summer at night what a great aroma, I can smell it right now just thinking about it. Everything is different now, I live about 400 miles from there, and they have ruined the whole State. It will never be like it was in the 50s, 60s, and 70s again....

BTW Gary, when I went to Italy the last time back in the 80s, they called me an American. Come back home to the States, and they call me an Italian. Cracks me up !! Go figure.
I'll just call myself what I am, ITALIAN AMERICAN, and proud of it.... seems you have to teach some people everything.

@garyny4073 my Grandmother had an apartment building in Los Felix, on Hillhurst and Finley, not far from the LaBianca, and Los Felix murder house. My parents, sister, and myself lived in one unit till I was almost 3, then we moved to the Valley. My Uncle Ralph had a famous LA restaurant on Hillhurst Blvd also Milano's. Right out of Hollywood and Silver lake in Los Felix. Angelo Buono one of the Hillside Stranglers had a car upholstery shop in Silver Lake, and went to the same High School in Glendale as my Cousin Johnny. When we moved from Los Felix to the Valley in 59 we moved to Sun Valley first, then to Chatsworth in 66. I left LA for good in August of 75, so I don't know about the Ranches now, Iverson Ranch where they made alot of Westerns might still be there off of Santa Susanna Pass, but Spahn Ranch is gone. You can still walk the old grounds though. The Walk in Killer, more commonly known as the night stalker, had a little problem in my old Home Town, Sun Valley. They pulled him out of a car he was trying to steal and threw him a terrible beating, in fact they beat him half to death, so bad that he was screaming for the police, can you imagine a wanted murderer screaming for the police to help him. That was the end of his gig, Sun Valley was always a tough place, even in the 50s and 60s. Same goes for North Hollywood, Pacoima, and San Fernando, they're all right there next to each other. Also had a blast in Chatsworth and Northridge, never a dull moment. Some times I miss those old places, but mostly I'm just glad I made it out alive. Good chatting with you, take care.

She appears to have uncovered a lot of untold details of various members from back in the day, like how Tex, Clem, Bruce, Charlie, and Shorty got in the vehicle for a final drive down the road. And how his body was treated afterwards.

Thanks for the video. I used to hike around that area in the early eighties every weekend. Went down into Manson Cave a bunch of times. There was a rock slide with maybe 2 foot clearance and a rope to help lower you down into the small cavern which was pitch black. You needed candles and flashlights to see. It was said that the family would resurect butterflies and what not down there. It was mostly full of broken beer bottles and graffiti at that point. I heard that the county dynamited the cave shut at some point to keep folks like us out.

Back in the late 1970s & early 1980s my friends and I used to go up to Spahn ranch to hike, camp, play concerts (bringing portable generators), have parties/ raves and of course do a bunch of LSD. It was a blast but you could feel so much negative energy up there. The Tate-LaBianca murders happened within a week of my 6th birthday… and even as a little kid you could feel the whole vibe of Los Angeles & Hollywood change. And when they Manson Family were arrested a few months later I remember my mom made my brother (age 7) and I (age 6) cut our long hair. While that wasnt the biggest tragedy Manson was involved in… It was what made me really hate him and I also became obsessed with the case. Being a fan of the Beatles also helped in my obsession with the case.. and when Vincent Bugliosi’s book “Helter Skelter came out that really pulled me in. So by the late 1970s my friends and I had to go to Spahn Ranch. I havent been up there in almost 40 years. It’s wild to see it today after time, fires & such have eroded it. Have you ever been to the Barker Ranch & the Myers Ranch out in Death Valley? Thanks for the video. ✌🏽

Right, an element of real fear (a celebrity's worst), that your palace- and your person- we're not as safe as they hoped they were. Interestingly, the 70s bring darker and occultic-themed fodder out of Hollywood..along with the 'dirty cocaine' (Clapton)
