Question: How many genres can fit into one song?
    Answer: Nunchucks 😉😂
Now I'm going to tell you the same thing I said about Dimash.... you have barely scratched the surface of this young man's talent. Hua Chenyu is not only a total performer, but probably the most versatile performer I've ever seen. He is second to none in the fan interaction/audience participation category. For his performance of "I Don't Care" on Singer (his original composition BTW), he taught the backup singers to sing "more like the audience ". A musical genius, he's a perfectionist on stage... but his personality off stage could be likened to a child-like love of life wrapped up in a mature man's body. If you watch closely at the end of his performances, (if the camera doesn't cut off too soon) you can actually see him "shake off" his stage persona and return to reality. Total immersion. The Singer performance of Mountain and Sea is a great example. His concert at the Bird's Nest (90,000 seat capacity) sold out in less than two minutes. A second concert date was added and it sold out in less than 3 minutes. Keep reacting to him... you won't regret it.

Yes, Jessie J is one of the contestants, same as Hua Chenyu, and Hua Chenyu is her most powerful contestant (although Hua is a very humble person who has no intent to win anyone but only forces on his performances). Jessie J and him kind dominated this show, Jessie J won 5 times in whole 13 episodes including the finale, Hua won 4 times in 10 episodes (he wasn't the initial singer who appeared from the very beginning of the show, but attend from the 4th as a substitute singer) and runner-up in the finale.

This made me so happy! I really enjoyed your reactions to Dimash, but this, this just made my day.
This song shows most of all that he is very versatile as an artist, and that his stage presence and performing skills are very well developed.
But it when it comes to him as an artist
in his entirety, it just gives you a little hint of what he's got.
In my opinion he is one of the (the) most intetesting artists of today, he is so fresh and diffrent and unique.
    Of course unique. So unique.
It can be sonetimes hard to judge his singing skill based on what is established as good or great singing.
He uses his voice as more than just a voice, he sees himself as a part of the whole, his voice also a musical instrument.
Example, often he don't use vibrato, not because he can't, he very much can, but he wants a clean sound.
We can never know what to expect from him.
I really hope you'll react more to him.

I highly recommend Hua Chenyu’s performance of “Child” from The Singer competition to see even more remarkable mouth manipulations and a beautiful emotional journey. No rap in that one. I think you would be fascinated by it. The pronunciation of his name is similar to “watching you” Also “Fake Monk” is powerful and a work of art, and “Heaven” is just inspiring. Thanks for reacting to this interesting artist.

Great reaction. I loved that you noticed the intricacies. Hua Chenyu sings a number of styles. This was his own arrangement of a popular song by another artist. The section you liked with the hand movements is actually sung and acted in the style of classical Beijing Opera. He also brought in an opera choir to sing the backing vocals during the section that reminded you of Lincoln Park. You should try reacting to his song Child from the same contest for a completely different side of his singing. Make sure you listen to one with subs.

It isn’t mentioned often enough, but Hua Hua is one of those rare artists who is a triple threat. The voice, song writing ability and performance ability are all amazing. And he wields all three to evoke emotions in his listeners. (Like mentioned in the reaction.) Hua often says that he doesn’t care what the listener feels as long as they feel. Which is the mark of an artist and not just a performer.

Congratulations! You just discovered the most versatile young singer/composer in Asia! In fact, I even haven't found a similar artist who is as versatile as him in western yet...
Hua's "Nunchucks" comprises different elements including opera, rap, rock and Chinese traditional opera, but the original song is a pure rap song, he added these extra elements in! BUT he has much more talents than what he shows in "Nunchucks". He always performs a different style on the SINGER 2018's stage. Just for your choices, if you like ROCK N ROLL, check out his original song "I don't care"(ep7), to know how high he can hit and his voice control, check out "Child"(ep5), or something really DARK, ARTISTIC and you have never seen before? "Fake Monk" is the answer!

Hua Chenyu is one those artists who care a LOT about how to convey certain emotions through his music, using his voice as an instrument to experiment with. (and he doesn’t care about others’ criticisms since he follows his own rules | this guy is an inspiration) I think his most experimental and unconventional arrangements/compositions/songs are ‘Fake Monk’, ‘Idiot’ and ‘Cancer’ (the latter is his own composition/song and it has no lyrics).
He’s also musically very cultured and likes to add bits of Western culture in his arrangements/songs (like classic opera, for example). Especially if you check out the “behind the scenes” of ‘Idiot’ where he explains his choices in terms of composing (not sure if the subtitled clip is still on RUclips though).
Although ‘Fake Monk’ and ‘Idiot’ are my favorite performances from his (with ‘Dad, I’m Home’), ‘Cancer’ still leaves me in shock each time I listen to it. It’s disturbing, it’s rough and unnerving, it gives you chills. It perfectly represents the stages of the actual disease. And he’s able to convey all these emotions with just his voice, his heart and his brain. It’s honestly amazing. He’s amazing.

I think it would be really interesting from your songwriters perspective to talk about some of his performances that he has rearranged from other songs and what goes into it and the complexity of recreating well known songs. Maybe that's just me, but I would find a comparison video really interesting.

I truly enjoyed your reaction. It was educational... You're one of the rare few who commented on Hua's voice cracking on the high note. I don't know enough about music to 'hear' it. But I do believe it. I recall watching one of his videos when he mentioned how he was expected to sing this very high note. He didn't think he could but he kept trying, trying and trying... Another song that Hua had no problem singing despite how it would make him look publicly, please try *Fake Monk*.

Caleb. I am a new subscriber; within a weeks span you have you reacted to my 2 favorite singers, and your insight and musical knowledge, as well as legitimately enjoying what you are listening to, you have my respect. A couple of thoughts:
I know you will continue to react to Dimash and Hua Chenyu, so I am mostly repeating what others have said. I definitely recommend Child, Dad I'm Home, Heaven (after you do Tengger's version), but also check out "Nanping Evening Bell", a duet with Juno Su. It is stunning and my 2nd favorite of his
Also, this is Singer 2018, the year after Dimash. And that WAS Jessie J, she was a contestant. The battles throughout that competition was fun, and the right 2 singers finished 1 and 2 ;)
Nice reaction again, and thank you!!

HuaHua is the king of stage performance...... he becomes the song. And if you watch all of his live performances you can see the moment he comes out of song... you can actually see it in his eyes and his demeanor. He is so awesome. He puts his music 1st, and does not care what the industry wants of him, he does exactly what he wants and how he wants to do it. He couldcare less about awards, record sales and popularity. He is truly unique and 100% real. Not to mention humble and shy ( but is also quite playful and silly). Thank you for reacting to him. You will find his songs are truly unique, and all are so different.

I would like to add some informations in case you didn’t know, “Singer” only give two chances of competitors to sing their original songs to compete, the rest has to be songs that aren’t theirs. Competitors are challenged to rearrange songs and create a performance that lured the audiences’ vote. This performance, is Jay Chou’s hardcore rap song. At first, Huahua was so worried that he would ruin the song because ‘Nunchuks’ is sooo iconic and hua loves both Jay Chou and the song. But in that moment, he had a thought, why wouldn’t he put as much genre as he could in one song? So, he did this. Opera, rock, rap, and chinese opera in one song. He’s incredibly creative.
As you can tell, as someone who knows music, Hua uses so much technique and part of his mouth to shape the sound he wants to create. In his “Child” performance (also in Singer 2018), he didn’t eat for two days in order for his throat to be clean of grease to perform this. What makes this performance so angelic is that, you’ve never heard a voice that clear before. While others are so powerful and they use vibratos a lot, Hua in the other hand.... ugh, how do I explain this. He’s so unique. Please consider to react to this performance, the twist somewhere in this performance would blow your mind! A big reaction channel once said, “Child” performance is a great video to recommend to a vocal coach or someone who knows music, because this performance is a perfection. And I agree!

The song is originally by Jay Chou - which is basically entirely rap. HuaHua makes it into his own and awesome. The falsetto part is kind of in the style of what you might hear in the Peking Opera.
Check out Fake Monk or Drinking Alone by him. Also I love the studio version of Giant Deer - very Radiohead ish. Also Tengger (for some reason people in the west write it as Tengri - so that's what you might find on videos instead) singing his song Heaven on the same show which is amazing.

@@CalebColesMusic Dimash performed Hello on the singer 2018 as a guest performer. Lionel Ritchies son in law Joel Madden was backstage filming Jessie J as she was preparing to perform. Hua Hua is a great artist and i can understand that he is a top selling artist in China. For my personal taste i think Hua Chenyu sometimes over do it and goes off on the etheral bit too much, almost with an undertone anger issue. So i have certain songs i really like and then others were it becomes too much. If u ever react or watch Dimash Screaming IDOL hits then i think u can see the resemblance between Dimash and Hua Chenyu cuz there are plenty.

@@CalebColesMusic Well Dimash didnt win first season of the Singer... could also have to do why a international artist won second season as somewhat of a compensation. I dont think Dimash has been treated unfairly since hes been guest appearing every season so far.

I'm sorry this is so long; I didn't intend for it to be. Anyway, thank you for your intelligent and professional commentary on this amazing singer. You mentioned that he was manipulating his overtones, and of course, you are correct, but I thought I might provide a bit of insight into that.
Hua Hua has a somewhat unique view on the use of vocals in his music. He has said many times that he doesn't see himself as a singer so much as a composer (more on that in a minute), and in his compositions, he doesn't see the vocal as anything more than another instrument. Since he is looking for a particular sound rather than a message, he doesn't concern himself much with the lyrics as he is composing, only with the sounds of the words and how they work within the overall composition. Given that, the overtone manipulation is simply him finding and using the specific sound that he wants for the song.
Regarding lyrics, he rarely writes his own because he freely admits that he's terrible at it. What he does as he is composing a song is to write down words, phrases, concepts, ideas, and feelings that he wants to express with the song, and then he sends the demo with that information to as many as 30 different lyricists. When one of the lyricists comes back with lyrics that he feels are close, he will work with that person to perfect them, often sending them back multiple times for re-writes until he is satisfied that they work musically with the rest of the song.
The rewrites may be due to the submitted lyrics being close but not really fitting the theme as well as he would like, but more often it's because he needs a specific tone or sound at that point in the song. Perhaps the lyricist has chosen a word or phrase that uses a closed vowel, but he wants it to be an open vowel for that place in the song, or vice-versa; or perhaps he wants a soft consonant instead of a hard one, etc. He is quite a stickler about this sort of thing, and he has no problem with requesting as many rewrites as necessary (in one case, more than 30!) to get what he wants because he refuses to compromise on his own work.
Regarding the voice cracks, given his perfectionist attitude toward his compositions, I'd be willing to bet those were conscious choices on his part rather than mistakes.

Yes, I agree that Hua Hua manipulates his voice to get the particular sound/ emotion that he feels suits the song. It is, as you say, another instrument. So the voice crack is more likely for effect. Love his creativity and talent!
