Cataline was one leader of a failed plot to overthrow that government. When he and the other conspirators were caught, Cicero was able to convince the Roman Senate to have them all summarily executed without a formal trial - his argument being that by conspiring against Roman civilization, they did not deserve its legal protections. But later on, Cicero lost favor and was himself executed for having Roman citizens executed without a trial.

Agreed, this is a breath of fresh air for cinema these days. I'm happy there are people like Robert Eggers to make cinema, but the impact Coppola and Scorsese have made will be for more generations to come! And we really need that still in movies today.

In Bollywood we had this movie called darna mana hai which consisted of small stories out of which one showed a man bullied and then getting the power to literally freeze and unfreeze people and time. No comparison with Francis sir but this reminded me of that scene.
I'm in. I'd rather watch an ambitious failure than a predictable formulaic film. The film industry used to swing big, and sometimes they were great and sometimes they failed-that's how all the best films are made.
The ease with which people are willing to accept that a person would test time stopping by dropping off to his death rather than just dropping to the floor reminds me of a certain pipeline story.
It's not about what you believe someone would do in real life, it's about what the scene is saying about the character. He did not use the floor, he used a deadly drop, presumably because part of him wants to die.
Finally: a trailer that makes you want to see the film to find out the story, rather than just showing you all the story before you get to see the film!
