Great video and I agree with your analysis. From reading the Novels and applying some common sense I think its quite logical to assume Starfleet has tens of thousands of capital star ships by this century. By the 25th century just the vast territory and sheer size of the Federation space would require this number of capital ships to provide the security needed for such large interstellar power. The novels portray the Federation during this era as a super highly advanced hyper power but not just technologically but also in its economic superiority with the vast infrastructure needed to keep such a gargantuan fleet well maintained and constantly upgraded. By the 25th century the Federation is the most advanced power save for the society's who have transcended to some kind of ascended existence like the Q or the douwd. They are on the cusp of becoming a true galactic power. They have by this time fielded technology like the quantum slipstream drive on large portions of their fleet and are by this time sending fleets to the far corners of the beta, delta, and gamma quadrants. Their sensors, weapons and shields are some of the best and most powerful deployed and very few other cultures build ships that can match them. The khitomer accords of which the Federation belongs as the preeminent power represents nearly 60% of the military might of the entire Milky Way and 70% of the galaxy's economic capacity. Although other powers approach the Federation in some of these categories they really cannot compare in overall power nor the ability to project it over such vast swaths of known and unknown space. This is why former foes like the Klingons, Ferengi, and Cardasians to name a few have joined with the Federation in the khitomer accords to become allies. Even a faction of the Borg have joined as provisional members of the Federation. In the latest Voyager novels the Federation is establishing fleets and bases in the delta quadrant with the use of their quantum slipstream equipped vessels. In the Delta quadrant they are making treaties with a vast interstellar powers and establishing trade routes. A example of one such large democratic peaceful power which is close to the Federation in the number of member worlds but is not as technologically advanced is called the confederacy of worlds. But also diplomatic and trade ties have been set up with many other races such as the Telaxians, the Devor, the Krenim and even the Voth. The Federation has even established a ultra high speed subspace communication network to the Delta quadrant as a result of project pathfinder which allows for near instantaneous two way communication. By the early 25th century a small slipstream equipped fleet including the original but refit voyager has left the Milky Way with a race dubbed "Species 001" and are heading for the Andromeda galaxy. I particularly like this era in the books because it is the beginning of the Federation at its zenith. And it is explained in the novels that this is why Q had such interest in humanity and the Federation in particular becasue he knew that the destiny of the Federation was to eventually take over from the Q in order to lead and become the stewards of the Milky Way and beyond.

You know what bothers me about people complaining about Voyager’s “70 year trip home”? That people confuse the Intrepid Class’s max warp drive speeds (9.9975) with a max cruise speed (which is actually much slower 7). Warp 7 would take around 70 years to traverse the distance back home. Thanks for using cruise speeds when talking about the logistics of planet to planet shipping in the alpha quadrant

I guess the planetary defense ships are like the offshore patrol ships used by the United States Coast Guard although due to the size and capabilities as well as the range, they are deployed as an additional patrol escorts for a naval squadron.
I read from the TNG Galaxy class guide that these ships due to its size and larger accommodations as well as its abilities to hold more passengers, are used as disaster evacuation ships. Not unlike the role of a US Navy aircraft carriers and helicopter carriers in disasters, both natural and Man made. As I recall on TNG, there were a couple of episodes where the Enterprise D was used in this role.

Technically 2980 are deployed during fleet rotations and the in-transit ships can be diverted for emergencies. Unfortunately fleet rotations are how Navies have to operate including every other Galactic Powers like the Klingons and Romulans have to rotate there ships also. • @jaymikevillanueva1212
      @jaymikevillanueva1212 Год назад +3

The Defiant class were still manufactured around the 25th Century but their shortcomings were pretty obvious given these were literally the brass knuckles of the fleet. They aren't made with much comfort in mind, so it's best if the Defiant tactical escorts (including other ships like the Saber class) were based around starbases and long range outposts. Their shortcomings led to bigger tactical escorts with a few important luxuries in mind, which made them perfect for second contact missions and long range recon missions or border security patrols far away from their assigned starbases. That's why Starfleet created the Diligent class and others of a similar profile.
Still, it cannot be stated just how important the Defiants are to the fleet. They're small, armed to the teeth, and very easy to manufacture compared to most ships. Their small size, fighter-like maneuverability, and blistering speed makes them the perfect guard dogs to key long range bases and outposts, if you think about it. A handful of Defiants in a wolf pack formation with a swarm of fighters and heavy raiders could literally make any potential adversary (well, ANY adversary except the Borg) think twice on attacking a starbase.

@@Xightly_Loopid_001 If Starfleet learned from their mistakes, it's a safe bet by the end of the Dominion War, the fleet would churn out Defiants and smaller ships in record numbers while reactivating older ships to bolster their numbers and rebuilding the fleet from scratch. This is true after the Synth attack which also decimated a number of ships still stuck at the shipyards over Mars.
The 25th Century Starfleet ain't the Starfleet that was lax on the 24th Century. They've learned not every faction or culture is friendly and there's always that looming Borg threat that could happen anytime despite being crippled by both Captain and Admiral Janeway. But that's not to say they're perfect. When it comes to defense and understanding war, Starfleet is still a noob.

I think the Inquiry class took up this role during the Picard era. In all likelihood it is more efficient to build larger ships as I would imagine most of the cost of a ship comes from its warp core, nacelles, computer and other components rather than the hull. So a Defiant could be 1/2 the cost of an Inquiry but 1/5 as tactically capable for instance, making it better value to build an Inquiry.

Not to say the video is inaccurate, but If the Federation really ran this way it would be insane. From a pure logistical point, at least for the transport/support division it makes no sense to keep all those disparate vessels from multiple worlds in service after a couple hundred plus years while still doing contract work for starfleet. Servicing them and parts and maintenance all would be a nightmare, deliveries would be inconsistent and be unreliable due to potential breakdowns and differing slow warp speeds (and scale, for those on the old 23rd century scale). It would make far more sense to condense dozens of older vessels down to a handful and replace based on age and/or condition..
It would be far better to have say 2-4 classes that could serve multiple roles each. Such as for example:
    - Nova class serving in all roles for scouting/medical/science/research
    - Interceptor class (a fan favorite) serving as escort and patrol and system defense
    - Mångsysslare class class (a fan favorite) or a similar multi-purpose vessel serving as quick change transport container tug serving all needs by container transport or towing including medical, mobile repair (aka dry-dock), shuttle/fighter carrier, tender container, deuterium/neutronic fuel carrier, colony transport, dry bulk, liquids, marine transport, products, and refrigeration.
All thee would be fairly small and simple builds by modern standard, and could be contracted out to more yards.
I could see a single smaller type transport for smaller things, like the Raven class or something else to do very small or specific research, or transport small amounts of goods/people.
Also, I'm not convinced the Federation could only produce 30 vessels per year... because they have multiple yards, and even with Mars Utopia Planitia gone, we have multiple yards in Sol alone (McKinley, San Fransisco, Luna Shipyards), let alone a couple dozen other facilities scattered across Federation space... and also various repair facilities.

They were for mass production of ships at Utopia Planitia to evacuate Romulan planets. We are talking ship numbers quickly that in the universe, only the Dominion built, except there was only about 5 years before the supernova happened. That is approximately 20 worlds to be evacuated, 10 of which had the equivalent of current Earth's population.
After they evacuated the planets, the ships would then be used to move supplies and resources to those planets.
The Romulans turned to the Federation, because, basically, they could not be bothered to rescue the populations the Romulan Senate deemed a waste of resources to remove. We are talking a Purge type step here.
All of the Romulan Star Empire leaders and key personnel had already evacuated before the Federation was even informed.
The Tal Shiar attacked Mars, because the Federation efforts made the Romulans look really bad by comparison, and the Tal Shiar has always wanted to use any situation with the Federation to weaken them.

Still not enough compared to the exiled Furies Reclamation fleet(novels) which was 2/3 of population of the remnant Furies that has over some dozen thousand generational ships was going to the AQ the long way like Voyager from the DQ which would take over several decades. The other remaining 1/4 Furies population that was sent outside of the galaxy by Voyager in their worldships which includes over a dozen thousand ships would be returning to the galaxy at the edge of the Gamma Quadrant around the late 25th century. So Starfleet is still outnumbers by several times the total number of ships in the fleet by the time the Furies arrives at the AQ.

@@Xightly_Loopid_001 Based on what? I can understand a member world folding their capital ships into Starfleet, but, based on LDs, not all members will. And we're just assuming that a member world's capital ship is less advanced than Starfleet's? Member worlds have access to the same technology, especially the Vulcans, who still have their own fleet of ships (probably due to a bit of chauvinism). Now, independent contractors and civilians wouldn't have access to the latest advancements, I can understand. All I am saying is that we should take these things as a case-by-case basis. Yes, some members worlds would only have access to lower-tier vessels, if at all. However, I would suspect that not all member worlds would not only not readily give up their own fleet, but would join just to have access to more advanced technologies, and would only join the Federation for security purposes.
Still, I do like the breakdown in fleet dynamics. I just think that such a dynamic wouldn't be as straightforward as the video indicates. You know, exceptions to the rule, like the Vulcans being one the few member worlds with their own fleet of ships, but dedicated to science pursuits, leaving the security matters to Starfleet. I mean, heck, Spock was the first Vulcan to even serve in Starfleet, and he was considered to be the weirdo of his society until he came back home a celebrity, thanks to his time on the Enterprise. So, according to the pic of all the starships at 3:43, the Nebula class has the exact same saucer as the Galaxy class. So why is the bridge design so different and so much smaller when it appears in an episode of DS9? Surely if externally deck 1 on both ships look identical the bridge size and design should also be identical. It doesn't make any logical sense for Starfleet to design a whole different bridge when it's more cost effective to reuse that which is already used. Otherwise why bother using the same saucer at all?

I seriously doubt the logic of orbital drydocks lined with replicator panels. Even the stuff that seems basic like the structural framework components or hull plating probably couldn't be replicated on vast industrial scales you would need to support starship construction. Y'all may not realize that feed lines to support structural integrity field system woven into structural framework and I think the hull plating also. As for hull plating components for shield grid also incorporated into each hull plate, you know the stuff that conducts and shapes the basic em field and heavy graviton particles that constitutes the shields. It would be more practical to mass manufacture them rather than replicate the stuff. It's cannon that something as large and complicated as a type 9 shuttle could be transported, but I don't that's something thats frequently done and was going to be implemented at that particular time for that particular situation. Those panels lining the drydocks are basically lights for the workers and also house the shields systems for the dock. It's been implied that hulls are built in enclosed orbital facilities until the hulls are complete enough for fitting out in a drydock facility. What replicators are more practical for is to process raw materials and refine them to more usable materials. This explains utopia planetia's placement at mars in order to take advantage of belt resources.

I don't know why they retire ships. It's not as though these future build materials wear away with age - it's duranium! Every starship should stay in service until it's either destroyed or damaged beyond repair. It's not as though money or resources is an issue in the 25th century (it's a universe with infinite energy, land, replicators and billions of people with nothing to do). It makes no sense that giant replicators aren't creating galaxy-class-sized ship after ship every second. Why aren't the giant replicators replicating other replicators? The universe should be filled with starships!

    • @Xightly_Loopid_001

My assumption is when a Starship is retired from frontline service in Starfleet, it then serves in Federation support roles. The retirement likely is a ceremonial naval tradition honoring the crews who served onboard the ship. Also I don't think they would have the capacity to replicate and entire ship might be a bit complex on that large scale, but 3D printing would be easily within the tech range.
