The Black Series is simply better. The turbo set up is better for the longer track compared to supercharged one which could suffer from heat soak. GTD didn’t do well on the straightaway that might indicate heat soak.
One thing to note, the AMG not only had worse track conditions, it also did its run in much cooler temperatures they did their lap in winter. Not ideal for Cup 2 R’s Mustang lap was done 20 degrees C AMG has plenty left on the table even if Ford did a re run, the AMG could do way more.

The one way to put this issue to bed is, get both cars ready on a dry day, run them like 5 minutes apart, switch drivers and run them again 5 minutes apart. Same dry track, same track temp. If a driver has no bias towards a particular manufacturer, you can then draw more valid conclusions. Maybe even have the drivers do a few laps in each to get a feeling of how each car behaves at speed. Drivers have egos too, and each will want to get the best time possible without putting a car in the trees. Of course, all this might not happen due to cost, track scheduling, etc. Just my opinion. I would like to have either, and the Porsche too, i'm not a fanboy to a particular brand.

The Black Series weighs 3616 lbs, relatively heavy and it could probably be considerably faster with better conditions so it's reasonable to argue if the GTD was even within 200 of that it of that it could be incredibly fast. Considering what it did on a damp track it's hard to believe it could actually weigh 4000 lbs or more.

Man imagine a c7 zr1 on cup 2Rs. It was within .25 seconds of the mercedes at VIR. I would think it would be very close. To bad GM let this one go and never went back and made another official attempt. This car hands down could go sub 7, and it's slept on. What a let down for a heck of a car.

You are right that both cars run similar configuration of front engine, rear transaxle. The big difference is that the AMG has the engine moved as far back as possible. The cabin is also moved back so the weight of the driver is almost on the rear wheels which gives it a 50/50 weight distribution. The mustang is also over 300lb more than the amg.
both factory drivers, OBVIOUSLY merc had worse conditions so the car is the weak link. It's not that Dirk can't drive, the mustang is simply not as stable or capable on track.

You're burning me and I'm guessing others out on these similar topics posted day after day. Dirk Muller goal was to run a Sub 7 minute lap without wrecking the Mustang GTD. He accomplished that goal. Ford just signed a new set of drivers for their factory GT3 race team. They signed Audi factory driver Frederic Vervisch who is a 2x winning driver at the 24 hours at the Nurburgring. It appears if another lap record attempt is made. It will likely be with a New Ford Performance factory GT3 driver.
I do believe they held back for 3 reasons, the (wet?) track, the driver even though we all know Mueller can drive, and possibly held back on purpose? All hypothetical cause I do believe the Porsche with the rear engine and the rear wheel steering is the reason of the corner speeds. That’s a no brainer! So why argue to argue!? Yes I want them both and one day we will have them! But patience my young Padawans! Lol! Enjoy what you have!

Ford has spent a lifetime making fast straightline cars American muscle style for the general consumer aside from their GT40 and GT’s. The AMG project’s have always been way more advanced track focused with GT usability. Americans won’t out-engineer Germans ever in any market. Their culture is about making things actually better rather than learning to scream the loudest about being the best with absolutely no evidence like everything American.
