I think they’re suffering from same face syndrome because of the lack of customization options. Miitopia was a huge hit partially because of the various options that they could decorate their miis with. You could add wigs, face stickers for more detail, and it still has the same, simple mii style yet were so diverse. Heck, you could make spongebob if you wanted lmao-

What annoys me about this most is that Nintendo already has a PERFECT model for the mii's, that being their smash bro's ultimate appearance. Perfectly detailed and "next gen", with a set of matching arms and legs, all without straying from the classic mii look which we have all grown to love.
The secret sauce? It's not overly detailed, with masterful proprtions. When there is detail (in the costumes) it is matchingly cartoonist.

    • @Starkite

Perhaps they thought the Miis made them lose popularity and profit on the Wii U, because it was all about that.
Actually, I had a Wii U and played with it a lot in my childhood. It was really fun, and Splatoon starting on it really tested the motion control ideas.
I think this is just the problem of trying to be original (like Wii U complainers wanted) but also a better gameplay.
If we think about it, people didn't like the Wii U because it was "A poor excuse of a Wii system" maybe this is their way of trying to bring originality instead of Mii-focused.
Maybe they wanted to update the sprites because Mii was getting tiring and outdated designs. And we are just seeing a Demo, they might add more expressions and animations... But it's more like Ninjala.

I think the new characters are kinda cute, but in a very 'corporate' kind of way, whereas the Miis were SO WEIRD LOOKING when they first released that you couldn't help but love them. Even as Miis got more complicated, they still stuck to the flat and simplified design that lets you project personality and feeling onto them. The new characters are just kinda... staring into the middle distance... soullessly...

The main problem is simple: Lack of Creative freedom.
Mii are free range, you can make whatever with the tools you're given and there's whole series about making Miis because of this freedom, like Failboat does.
This new sportmates, likely won't let you move or change the size of features, so you're locked to just choosing what you like, and that's it. Compared to Miis, this is a downgrade in character creation.
Lastly, I think Miis are an icon of the Wii Sports series. Yeah, it's just another avatar creator, but it's so different to the customization of other games, that it's just uncanny to replace them. Switch Sports honestly looks more like a Gameloft or mobile game than a Nintendo property because of it.

My issue with these “new miis” are the same issues I have with the new monster high dolls.
The original miis had the perfect design which accommodated maximum customization, but a mii meant to replicate a real person vs. a mii meant to replicate a fictional persona wouldn’t look funky next to each other. The most customization the new miis have would be the hair style, clothes, and colors. The design needs to contort into a specific mold to look cohesive. Think vrchat in the same sense. Completely different avatars, but they still look cohesive. The new miis can’t accommodate this.

The old miis can change their height and weight, and even though it's simple, they feel more unique and inclusive to each individual person. Miis are... well, me. That's their charm. They represent individual and unique people and are playable characters people feel comfortable being represented by. The new ones are just... slight variations of the same base model. There's no individuality there. I definitely don't feel represented with the new miis, and the imperfections that made miis unique are just... gone

I think the biggest issue is you don't "update/Replace" something that is still popular. People still really like the Mii's so replacing them makes no sense no matter what you replace them with. For an example I think that is part of what killed Milo Murphy's law aswell, fans were still very into Phineas and Ferb and didn't want to see it be replaced by something else, so milo murphy's law was pretty much dead on arrival because there was this idea that it killed Phineas and Ferb. (which I am not going to say that was a bad idea it was what the creators wanted to do. They were pretty much all out of ideas for Phineas and Ferb, but the fans didn't want something else and they are the one who ultimately decide what gets watched.)

The chibi heads scream "KAWAII" while the hairstyles and body proportions feel like an attempt to be relatable and trendy. Also, some parts of these designs clash because they don't all have the same level of detail, for example the hair and clothes vs the eye shape and mouth. (Why does the pink haired one have such detailed hair? Why do the eyes have such elaborate coloring and lightning when the face is so simplistic?) It's like they're trying to do what everybody else is doing which is to make generic cute characters but also trying to make them more realistic so they're more relatable/mature? This has been said a lot already but the baby face on the adult body is too uncanny.
Meanwhile the original Miis were just weird, goofy and funny, they weren't some attempt to be hip and trendy, they were something naturally quirky, unexpected and new at that time, and people just happened to find them appealing in so many different ways despite their weirdness and how simple their design was.

The Old Mii’s had exaggerated noses (and ESPECIALLY the noses), eyes, and facial features to me (as a kid cuz I started first playing when I was like 8) but it was also easy to recognize. Like if you showed me a Mii face and just that face only (like no hair, no jaw, just the face up close), then I would be able to say “Oh that’s a Mii face!” or something like that.
Whereas the “New Mii’s” had this soulless face on them. And the style compared from the New to the Old is just so EXAGGERATEDLY DIFFERENT I couldn’t even tell if the “New Mii’s” where even Mii’s anymore. They didn’t even look like they had ANY personality in them. Like The Henry Stickman Game had more personality in them then the these *things*- (my opinion) The “New Mii’s” are kinda cute, but super different from the Old Mii’s.

The issue I have with the new Mii's is their lack of charm. The old Mii's captured me as soon as I saw them. With their wacky faces that often didn't make sense, the blocky bodies, there is something about them that charmed me as soon as I saw them. Their bodies allowed them to have a sort of stubby movement, where they waddled instead of fully walking. I wouldn't mind an updated Mii editor, but this is style is the kind that makes Nintendo feel more like a cold corporation than a charming game maker. And the funny thing is, THEY HAD AN UPDATED MII EDITOR THAT THEY ALREADY KNEW THE FANS LOVED. The editor in Miitopia had tons of new options, and fans had tons of fun. Why not improve that, or even just re-use it? I've seen games that have been able to re-use assets from previous games and still not make it look stale.
I just wanted to say, that if tomodachi life ever gets a switch port, I want the old Mii's, and the comforting charm that came with it.
Edit: i think that I noticed another thing that makes these new Mii's uncanny compared to the original. From what is shown here, you can't change their head shape or move/resize their facial features. That's why they don't look as unique.

I feel like the most important thing to factor is that these are BRAND NEW (as far as I'm concerned).
They can add height, more hair styles, eye shapes, noses, mouths and custom colours. Throw in custom limbs and hats aswell and you might have a decently good customizer. I'm sure it shouldn't be too difficult as Roblox has already done that with its Avatar Editor and advanced games such as World Zero. No doubt, THAT would take at the very least a year, but if we just add more outfits and facial stuff, the Miis could be a lot better in the eyes of the New Mii haters
If you can customize it enough, you should be able to match your preferences no matter who you are. I believe you just gotta give it time.

I can understand everyone's reasoning for not necessarily liking these new characters because the Mii characters were simplistic but very customizable. However I think a certain factor also plays a part for the disdain of the new characters are people dont care for the change.
It's obvious that there are many valid issues as to why people don't like these new character compared to the classic miis, but this is a new system and it's not bad to have a fresh take since this is a new Nintendo sports game new implementations are bound to be added.
Now I know a lot of comments are going to come after me and say "oh but the miis are fine don't fix something that ain't broken" or "it's not about that it's about their overall designs" I've never dismiss that those are very understandable. I'm just saying that because people have such fond memories the finesse of Nostalgia trips with the miis in Wii Resort and Wii Sports and making funny customizable Miis that it's harder for them to try and be okay with the introduction of something new especially with the Classic Miis.
And who knows this is the only trailer of the new Wii sports game that we have until the official release we could be very surprised at the game's launch day with the amount of customisation options and such we just have to be patient and see. So again I myself like the Miis and I can understand the uninterest for the new Sports characters I think it's best to wait and see because we may be pleasantly surprised.

Another big thing about the new miis is that they have an age range! The old ones were so abstract that you couldn't really tell an adult mii from a kid unless you add bags and make them taller or make them tiny and cute. It was very open to interpretation, yet these feel like athletic young adults and sometimes they have wrinkles?? it's like a college kid with an old lady face on them. The lack of body shapes, heights, nose, eye, and other customizations also don't really help. Miis were easy to make, they didn't have to look exactly like you, but a caricature, and anyone could make one and feel included. These don't include as many people! Plus the old ones didn't really have a gender. it was either you had a dress or pants. All eye shapes, colors, etc were available regardless of gender!

You can buy literally any of these sports as countless other sims if the Miis aren't your thing, in varying levels of difficulty too. If you make a Wii Sports continuation for the switch, but take out the Miis, it's just another regular sports sim which no one who really like Wii Sports wants. Miis have been integral to the Nintendo sports series of games forever and to remove them just makes the game more generic and less approachable to long standing customers (most likely in favor of trying to get new customers and stockholders but these designs still have problems outside of just not being miis)

The Wii was many people's first impression of video games, and you would be hard pressed to find a Nintendo published game for the Wii that didn't include Miis. After that, Miis were also present in certain games on the DS and DSi, the 3DS, the Wii U, and are still accessible on the Nintendo Switch.

If they wanted to "completley phase out miis", then why did they make playing as a mii *mandatory* in mario golf story mode, why did just announce that miis are coming to mario kart tour a couple dayse ago? Why would they re release miitopia? The answer to these questions is simple, Miis are not being removed or replaced. All that happened was the team for this specific game chose not to focus as much on them. Animal Crossing player characters also don't take themselves too seriously, opting for just the right amount of cartoonish design, making them feel similar to Miis, the new characters in Nintendo Switch Sports take themselves way too seriously in terms of design, so it's almost like having poorly proportioned Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess characters filling up more than half of the playable roster of New Super Mario Bros. Wii, and the rest of the playable characters are from the Mario and Kirby series' games. It's a Mario game, but they include and emphasize The Legend of Zelda to such an extent that it isn't fair to compare it to earlier games in the series since it's more appropriate to call it a Legend of Zelda platformer game. Calling Nintendo Switch Sports a sequel in the Wii Sports franchise is not all that different, however, these are just new characters that take themselves more seriously than they have any need or right to considering the game they are in.
Furthermore, I have said these characters take themselves too seriously, and another problem is they also don't take themselves seriously enough, they refuse to sit comfortably in the cartoonish or realistic styles, falling into an uncanny valley of almost cartoonish enough to be Miis and almost realistic enough to be actual humans.

They look too humanoid. Part of the charm factor of the Miis at least for me was that they looked so goofy but in a good way because they had no feet and their arms were basically circles reminding you of a cartoon of some sort. Meanwhile these new guys have the "Meta" design which is just creepy humanoid bodies that all look the same. A big part of my childhood was making Miis that looked really stupid looking but likeable all the same, meanwhile these new Miis and Meta avatars give you this very serious vibe almost like its just a simulation and youre not meant to have fun at all. I think games should feel like the creator/s had fun making them or at least want you to have fun playing it, so the "goofy" factor is definitely important for a game to have imo
edit: even the gameplay looks boring and serious, unlike wii bowling when someone accidentally threw the ball backwards and everyone playing the game irl would laugh at all the miis jumping back

I find the Miis in the Wii and Wii U era (tired of Wii U not getting it's due credit btw, itt was flawed but not without positives) to be endearing because they usually had some imperfection. They were more relatable and endearing because of them. This looks like a mobile game character, not a Mii.

  • @_mediogre_

I don't like them because of their lack of style. The classic mii has such an instantly recognizable style to it. You see a mii, or even just the face of one, and you immediately know that it's a mii because of its distinct look. Also, it's nearly impossible to make a convincing older person with these new miis.

Commenting what's already been said, but the problem with the new characters is that despite being so much more high quality and technically speaking, better designed, they look incredibly generic. You could tell me these were the avatar characters for the Xbox and I'd believe you. This is also Nintendo's "fix" to a formula that, while outdated, isn't broken. People love the simplicity of the Miis and what really should be done with them is further expansion on the creator. We got detailed faces with the Miitopia remake, why not expand upon the clothing aspect? This way people can still make their own Miis while also going beyond what was possible for the past few generations.

Yeah, exactly! They just look like your average avatar character, and unlike the old Miis, they just lack being instantly recognisable or charming. In my opinion, anyways.

From my perspective the reason I hate the Switch Sports avatars is just because they look BAD, I do not believe they are well-designed. It's like they took the Splatoon Inking and AC Villager and tried to make a best of both worlds, without taking into consideration what makes either design inviting.

In my opinion they aren't bad designs they're super adorable but I wouldn't really call them Miis. I don't know how to explain it but a Mii's design was basic and simple but you could spend hours and hours making as many as you want. If anything they should've left it how it was and maybe added a few new hairstyles, colours maybe add accessories but still kept it to a similar design

My first thought was immediately "is that ninjala?" And, they already have the classic Miis in smash bros. That would mean there would be some inconsistencies to what we have in the game, and the switch profile pictures themselves, too.

I still remember when I reacted to this. I was constantly whispering to myself: „Where are the Miiii‘s?? Where are the Miiiii‘s???!“
I was so glad that they showed that you can still use them.
A Mii is so iconic and recognizable and the new ones look like they belonged in some animated webseries.
I also don’t think that you can costumize them like the original Mii‘s. You could create cool stuff. For example I often saw Mii‘s in Mk8D with random Mario characters on them like a shy guy for example. And I think (if you can even costumize them like that) it would look weird on the new ones.

I 100% would have bought this game if they had included the makeup feature from Miitopia. I’ve spent HOURS making Miis in that game because there’s so much you can do with the tools they give you. Whereas you can make a Mii look like yourself, or Peter Griffin, or a hamburger, there’s… not much you can do here. They’re stuck looking like normal humans. That’s my main issue with these Metaverse-lookin’ suckers.
Redesign’s far better, especially with the focus on distinctive shapes. I also like their bowling ball egg. Good stuff.

I remember back in the Wii U days, people were complaining about how they were forced to use Miis, I also remember near the end of Wii U's lifespan I had to end my obsession with Miis, because people with Mii profile pictures were viewed the same way as Gacha Kids are viewed today (TL;DR: Miis were very uncool during the Wii U era). I also remember when Switch launched, people were happy when Miis became optional. So yeah, nobody likes Nintendo stuff until Nintendo takes them away.

For me, the most frustrating thing about this is that Miis have received new customization options (mostly new colors), but it is not possible to play with them in most of the games. Invites to create, but where to use them next? Well, Mii creation is hidden in the settings after all...
For me, the existence of Mii maker and lack of utilization of Miis frustrate people (after all, I wouldn't think this outrage would be so big if Mii Maker wasn't on Switch). Plus as people have told, Miis are a big part of Wii Sports.
    Just my two cents...

I totally agree with all of this. Also, I think it has something to do with the mii channel on the Wii. It gave them personality. I thought it was cool how we could bring those same miis into various games. On the 3ds, we had the mii maker which was similar to the mii channel, we had streetpass, swapnote, and the mii plaza. The Switch has nothing to let us interact with miis or use them on the console itself. It seems like Nintendo removed everything that made their consoles endearing.
