Like A Dragon Gaiden: The Man Who Erased His Name Review

- RGG Studio's latest action-brawler is a captivating and emotional look at Kiryu's life that offers a 'greatest hits' of the series' gameplay.
Perhaps I was naive to think that the legend of Kazuma Kiryu actually wrapped up with Yakuza 6: The Song of Life, and that his appearance in Yakuza: Like A Dragon was simply a nod to longtime fans such as myself. Having played through Like A Dragon Gaiden: The Man Who Erased His Name, I'm now convinced that leaving Kiryu to grow old in the shadows wouldn't have been the right move. Although Gaiden is a bite-sized story--noticeably shorter than previous entries--it proves that Kiryu has so much more life to live.
From the wild new Agent fighting style to the wealth of captivating side activities and tried-and-true Yakuza story drama, Gaiden is a tight package that's akin to a 'greatest hits' for the franchise. While it may feel like a retread of previous games at times, the formula is no worse for wear and still finds ways to surprise me with its straight-faced delivery of absurdist humor. Gaiden acts as a middle chapter that flows into the events of Yakuza: Like a Dragon, the 2020 RPG starring Kasuga Ichiban as the protagonist, and it leads directly into the upcoming Like A Dragon: Infinite Wealth, Ichiban's second outing. It's tough to talk about this game in a vacuum, but because it so heavily targets those who've been on the Yakuza journey all this time, it hit me hard in my feelings--especially as I barreled toward its heart-rending conclusion. In that respect, it is both a typical and exceptional entry in the Yakuzaverse.

Unlike the IGN guy this guy feels like an actual fan of the series, which is appreciated
He is a sicko. Listen to him on the podcast he breath these games
You guys really don't understand opinions do you? And I am love this series lol
Idk, I feel like the perspective of someone who isn't a fan can be valuable for new folks taking a peek at the game.
@@Nobody-wx6rk that's just crazy talk. Clearly you can only have an opinion of this game if you know every minutiae from every game in the series.
@@Nobody-wx6rkI can see what you say, but it wouldn't work with this game in particular, as it really doesn't stand alone on its own, since it directly connects the previous games in the timeline with the RPG games. Having someone who isn't a fan, or at least someone who has played the rest of the games would be like asking your average joe to read Harry Potter's 5th book without context.
A spin-off game somehow has 22-hour of playtime with the same quality as the mainline one while MW3 over here failed at everything even when compared to a DLC
RGG has the recipe, they just have to improve on it more
RGG is not like Activation
and its 70 euros/dollars. COD became a joke again
and with 6 months of development :p
One also makes like 100,000 times more profit
Honestly, Kiryu is up there with the best gaming protagonists.
kiryu is one the best representations of positive masculinity and kindness iv seen in games
You mean... Joryu... 🤓
Black Myth's Wukong is.
Surprisingly, yeah actually, I would probably argue over something like this but he's pretty based, even if I do maybe like Ichiban and Majima more, the former who's story has just started and the latter who barely has any story
@@shlokwaghela9560Majima needs his own spinoff.
Kiryu is one of the best protagonist in all of gaming
fr. he's an icon
hes the best honestly
I dressed up as Kiyru today for a job interview, glasses included. I just happen to have that outfit.
Got the job. Kiryu power!
These games deserve way more recognition in the west.
Really hope this one sells really well and we get more games soon.
We've literally gotten a Western release of every game in the series except for one on the PSP, iirc.
@@RenegadePandaZ I know but still very less people know how good these games are.
Most of the people whom I ask to try RGG games, just give up in first 15 mins.
@@RenegadePandaZ We also didn't get the original Ishin nor Kenzan
They are pretty popular now, like, real populad
@@shlokwaghela9560 Yea but I wish they are like AC or some other big franchise. Everyone should know Kiryu like they Know Ezio.
its crazy seeing kson go from fangirling over the kiryu reveal scene in 7 to actually being in the games in gaiden and 8
2:10 those were clearly non-lethal bullets because we all know that Kiryu has NEVER killed anyone
TRUE
Don't you know, Rubber bullets are canon in Yakuza verse 😁
it's true, I was one of those guys and I'm right here typing this, those were bullets with red paint
Rubber bullets and rubber blood.
22 hours is still a good amount of time for main story.
It took him 10 hours to finish the campaign/story.
It'll take me much longer to complete I'm going to take my time when playing.
That’s pretty much how long the most of the titles are. 5 and 7 were reaaaally long though.
@@bodhisattva-p true, 5 & 7 felt slow to me.
Kind of funny how the latest CoD is asking full-price for a 3 hour campaign, while this game has a price cut despite having 10-20 hour content
Only an 8, but it's definitely a 10/10 if you're an actual Yakuza fan.
Hey, I'll take an 8 for a short RGG spinoff any day. Means we're eating good.
So true😅😂 we totally playing that shi😏
Always a good day when there's a new Like a Dragon review written & voiced by Michael Higham with editing and gameplay capture by Jean-Luc. Hopefully we'll see the same combo again for P5 Tactica soon.
3 months late but good job bro, proud of you
Thank you for this heartfelt review.
Yakuza never dissapoints ❤
“Juggle enemies”
That’s all I needed after the combat of lost judgement, air juggling is gonna be so fun in yakuza.
Awesome review. Sounded really fair. Looking forward to Gaiden in 2 days' or so time.
I'm about 12hrs in and love every bit of it. The side stories really bring back fond memories. This is the send off that Yakuza 6 should have been.
A better name would be : The Man Who Erased His Physical Copies Of The Game.
Great review Yakuza never disappoints. I felt that other reviewers miss the point of the game. Like they haven't play through Yakuza 0 to like a dragon or don't understand why they reuse cities and character throughout the game.
Great review! Very well described! Can't wait to play on Friday 😊
I really don't want to let go of Kiryu I wonder what RGG got for us after Infinite wealth I heard that they will be dwelling into different games but I just don't want to lose these endearing characters they have made but I know whatever they do it's gonna be good love RGG so much.
Thank you for having an actual fan of the series play the newest entry in the series. It means so much to us fans than someone who still compares it to Japanese GTA or keeps relating it to Yakuza 0.
If I had a nickel for every time a person named Kiryu ditched their name, I'd have two nickels.
I fine appetizer for infinite wealth
Kiryu in the end also became legend in the gaming world. Great job RGG and arguably the best fanbase in gaming who supported the games for what they are.
Kiryu the goat
Stg this serie will never get old for me 😭 We NEED a AKIYAMA full centered game
we need a game solely for Majima AND Akiyama, these are surely my favorites along with Kiryu
Yakuza series or lad will always have a place of my heart
2:10 that time when Kiryu never killed anyone again
Gaiden made my dream come true of fighting a huge horde of enemies in the satisfying combat system that they've been developed and improved every year.
Neat and great review, definitely worth to play.
I had pre ordered this the moment it came available on the PSN store can’t wait to play it
Playing it right now its a blast!!!! I always enjoy yakuza stories and gameplay!!
2:19 They took that straight from Lost Judgement, and I'm happy about it.
I thought kiryus final story was in yakuza 6. I guess maybe they changed they’re minds and wanted to bring him back. Been a great game, still feel’s samey as many other yakuza games but still worth playing
It’s Michael Higham. We love this guy
Great review
Kiryu using gadget and drone's
Jo amon: now you using my style fight
3:02 "on the edge of my seat" Oh my boy @imontheedgeofmyseat you made it
A proper review ❤
Loved playing this game!
Its funny how this game took 6 months to make and it has 22 hours of content and spiderman 2 took like 5 or 4 years to make and it has full content worth of at least 25 or 30 hours
And i like spiderman but its just crazy how fast rgg studios are
The thing is that RGG can reuse the same textures, the same map and same NPCs of the last 5 games. For example Lost Judgement had the same maps and textures of Yakuza 7. So they can concentrate to the most important thing: the story.
@@ilm91 RGG does what most developers wish they could do. Smart, reusable assets that are tweakable and upgradeable is what Nintendo/TPC/Gamefreak as an example wish they could do, but somehow a near-yearly Sega series has been doing it just fine for nearly 20 years with no game suffering much or being *that* bad, even 3 and Dead Souls.
Pensaba que estaban trabajando en conjunto luego mientras trabajaban en like a drsgon infinite
their efficiency is insane and more studios need to take notes. its efficiency while avoiding laziness and allows them to crank out stories, which are really whats most important
8/10 is great. im sure as a yakuza fan like me who spent years playing the game. im sure its a 10/10 kiwami 2 story was 10 hours for me so im hyped so decently long story and combat that looks great is epic
You had me at fmv Japanese models. Yakuza, you've done it again
And one of those models is a really special guest who've you've no doubt seen across vtubers
Does anyone know the song that play on the last part of this vid?
@00:08:38what is the name of side quest? Don’t want to miss it
I like the soundtracks, gameplay and story
Joryu 😍
2:12 dame dame 🎼🎵🎶🖼️
Michael Higham has turned into one of my favorite reviewers. Always trust his opinions. His FF16 reflected exactly how I felt about it. Great work!
it hurts me when nobody realize Spider-Kiryu meme reference. A kiryu mod in spiderman 2018
I want this game.
THEY GIVE US A FREE DEMO AFTER THE GAME?!!?!?!? we eatin good fr
explosive cigars ?! im in
2:11 NO WAY KIRYU NEVER KILLS 😭😭😭
MWIII is disappointing, but Like a Dragon Gaiden... You know the answer
Both disappointing
@@goofed86 False
What's funny is both MW3 and LaD Gaiden started development as DLCs, but LaD Gaiden still ended up being 10x better and more content-rich compared to MW3. Also Gaiden was literally made in 6 months
@@goofed86 why ?
I will have it, because it less than other ones
The man who erased his physical copy as well as his name.
Haha. I forgot that aspect of this release. A shame.
get the asia copy

Awesome review!
My fav game this year.
I'll probably play this right before infinite wealth. Never played the main line yakuza games
Then you have a LOT of catching up to do. Start in chronological order beginning with Yakuza 0
@@glitchman1272 Nah, doing that ruins the GAMEPLAY aspect of Yakuza/LaD, which evolve too much. Starting with 0 makes it super hard to enjoy the less fleshed out earlier games after you beat it, especially 3 and 4. Even the two Kiwami games struggle to hit 0's heights, and they just released the next two years after. Besides, it's way, way funnier seeing so many side characters, and soon-to-be main characters as kids, teens or random people you meet in side quests. Makes their references hit harder if you played previous games since if you start with 0, you'll actually have less context.
THE COUGAR IS STILL ALIVE??
Kiryu better be a guest character in Tekken 8
Yakuza is always a great time.
I played it and i love it , very fun and enjoyable
nice of gamespot to not put major spoilers in the video unlike other reviewers.
2:11 those better be rubber bullets and rubber blood
They need to hide them buttons on the hud during gameplay
god i cant fukin wait 😭
Yakuza games are always amazing. The worst yakuza is still an A-
These games are so cool!
2:11 rubber bullets got more advanced
For me its a 10/10 masterpiece ✊👍
this truly is a dame dane moment
CABARET CLUB!!!
Too bad it's the same city for the 3445th time. Love this series, but come on. Luckily the next like a dragon goes to a different city/ environment....
So now we get girls that are real actresses that filmed. I wonder what this franchise will look like in 10 years, it’s already ridiculously immersive, you feel like in Japan, that’s why it’s so good.
Yakuza games with every next chapter sometimes feels like a spin of of Dead Rising game. Imagine Yakuza-Kazuma Kiryu meet Jin Kazama or Kazuya Mishima from Tekken. 😉 😍
The assets and animations from this and Infinite Wealth are laying a very nice groundwork for a Kiwami 3
So excited lol love yakuza or well like a dragon since they changed the name. Wasn’t huge on the turn based one though
Lost Judgement, Infinite Wealth and Gaiden, are they using Dragon Engine? Gaiden looks different
7:02 I'm so angry that so many games require you to play with only one hand. Why they don't make a one hand controller??
These games always look so cool but then I start playing them and can never get into it
I was like that for a long time. At some point they just clicked with me and I couldn't put them down anymore.
if this game has LJ style juggling, i'll give it a 10/10
GP
Ukyo Tatsuya deserve more...
Wait did Kiryu started blasting with guns at people at 2:10? Isn't his whole thing not killing?
Who told you that? Kiryu has never been a saint.
You're a little confused, that was Joryu. Kiryu would never and will never harm even the most evil fly
There is no Yakuza game I won’t play and enjoy myself.
8:45 considering that RGG has already used that type of progression system before (LAD0) i would it's more... short and sweet.
Couldn't get into Yakuza Like a Dragon because I just like Kiryu and thats it
Always wanted to get into these games
Hope they make a current gen only Yakuza game soon. Right now needing to cater to last gen puts a limit on the game evolving to look even better
Why doesn't it have a physical version ?
it does in asia. english too
3rd review I've seen now. Two 7s and now an 8.
And a 10/10 score in our hearts
I wouldn't be surprised if one of the 7s was from IGN. I'm not sure I've ever seen them give a Yakuza game more than a 7.
@@Fallenpack You are correct.
@@Fallenpack The only Yakuza game IGN have given higher than a 7 was Yakuza 0. Every other Yakuza game gets a 7 or lower from IGN because they keep giving reviews to the same guy who doesn't like Yakuza
Metacritic has it at a 79 right now
YES OR NO:
Is mahjong back?
10:13 Did I see Joryu singing bakamitai
The live action cabaret stuff creeps me out a little. Waiting for infinite wealth.
They're trying new ideas, and it gave the vtuber kson (the one in the red dress) a chance to be part of the game. I do agree it's a bit jarring though
What about English dub?
It's an 8, everyone
Waiting for this to ship from Japan because I insist on having a physical copy. Excited, since the new style of the mainline games just doesn't gel with me, and Kiryu will forever be better than any other protagonist they come up with.
How long will it take to ship to u ? I was thinking about doing the same thing
Ya I had already pre-ordered the digital version months ago but decided I wanted a physical version just for preservation reasons with my collection so I bought a Japanese copy from play asia's website this week not sure when it's gonna be sent though. It was my first time trying to import an Asia copy.
This review is way better than IGNs pitiful review.
