      What I found truly amusing as an avid environmentally conscience cyclist, is that recycled rubber compound paths rapidly deteriorate. Causing micro particles of plastics, rubber and other compounds to enter the environment, washing into the soil and our waterways.

      This is actually true. Technically it's "hazardous work" because you're on the road in the heat or dark or rain. So you get a solid base salary plus weekend/overnight pay plus the hazard pay on-top. No idea how to get that job though haha

      This is esp. true for refreshing the roads, shaving off, recycling and putting it back on.
      But never thought about building new roads. Wonder how much recycled material is used on them.
      Okay, quick search: Apparently newly build roads will use much less recycled material than renewing the road surface. In total it is (in Germany) about 84% asphalt waste gets recycled.

      The granular base they mentioned (in Australia at least where this is based) is literally 100% recycled materials. Either crushed leftover rocks from other manufacturing processes, or commonly just crushed old concrete

    I actually work in road construction as an operator, and the funniest part of this to me is that asphalt is a 99% reclaimable material and most paving projects incorporate at least 25-30% recycled materials for cost efficiency

    asphalt IS recycled, like 80% of it is old road ground down with some new bitumen added to it, they don't even heat it up properly anymore, for the environment offcourse then the paving machines have to burn more gass to heat up the mechanism whilst it used to be that an isolated truck could wait half a day and still need minimal reheating for the machine to work fine with it

      It's not remotely real, management never get affected by this stuff. It's all staff members going through training that's either pointless because you're not a nasty person, or useless because you are and you'll ignore it.

      @@tjeulink right, I mean the problem is that so often it is just _signalling_. I'd like to think very few are opposed to a more equitable world, yet organisations are rather efficient at avoiding actually doing anything to support that, so we get nonsense slogan instead.
      The dangerous part of course is that people get so annoyed at the slogans they end up opposing inclusivity as well, a cynic might say that's what a lot of these groups want event…

      @@tcideh4929 except that that mentality led to laws requiring governments to outsource things that should be done by the government to private for-profit companies who raise costs and run things ineffectively. And there's been a recent push for pushing out skilled government workers who have the most experience and awareness calling them "deep state" when all that really means (if you look it up) are people who actually can manage to run things. Also, you as a person tend to pay to these companies as well since monopoly restrictions have been removed on a lot of industries. Government tends to have corruption and inefficiency but the goal is to have a transparent and accountable government. People who push for government functions to be run by companies (I'm not saying that you're one of those people) tend to forget that companies tend to be by definition less transparent and less accountable that most governments and also have an entirely different goal in mind.

    Legit this kind of stuff is one of the reasons i left local government. I was able to avoid it gor a long time, but eventually woke politics came to my little town too. When my supervisor told me i should change the recreation poster language from "Teen girls running club" to "female identifying persons running club" i knew I wasn't going to last long lol. Amd this was in Canada, so its not impossible i could have faced criminal prosecution for discrimination against an at risk minority if i expressed disagreement

      Lol. Yes, it is impossible you would have faced criminal prosecution.
      The bill everyone referenced when claiming you'd get thrown in jail for language around trans people was Bill C-16. In order to get charged under it, you would have to be either (a) publicly advocating for genocide, or (b) willfully promoting hatred in such a way that it is likely to lead to a breach of the peace. You disagreeing with this language change is very clearly neither.
      Additionally, since this law was put into place 6 years ago, a grand total of 0 people have been arrested or charged under it. And I can assure you that no one would want to make your situation the landmark case. So yeah, it pretty much was impossible.
