      Nothing that happens on Buffy beats anything that happens on Angel. Over on Buffy, they're trying to recreate Buffy and Angel with everyone. And over on Angel, everything is original. For example Angel's background with Darla and Darla's character development

    My favourite thing about the ending it's that it's Drusilla, Angel's creation, that keeps him from saving Darla at the end. And you can see in his eyes how aware he is of that. His old sins stripping him from the possibility of finding some kind of redemption for what he and Darla had done.

    "Whenever Holland talks about morals..."
    I think the creepiest thing is that he might actually mean it. He's clearly not devoid of human feeling. He's obviously attached to Lindsay. His admonishment about "healthy attachments outside of the office" is honestly good advice. He might have been able to convince himself that he has some morals left. And that's...honestly terrifyingly realistic.

    I absolutely adore the conversation between Angel and Darla in the motel, it really encapsulates why they’re my favourite relationship in the Buffyverse, there are just so many layers to their history and their feelings towards each other, every one of their interactions is charged with a different kind of emotion. And the gentleness before W&H bust in, when Darla accepts her fate and you can tell Angel is willing to stay with her to end end.

      It reminded me of when Angel was trying to reach Faith after she accidentally killed the deputy mayor and he was making head way, then Wesley and his band of moron watchers barged in and kidnapped her saying the now famous line - "We know how to handle slayer like her."
      Ha! Boy were they wrong. They really messed everything up that Angel had build with Faith up until that point. 🤦🏻‍♀️
      Everything could have been different for Faith if they'd not interfered with what Angel was trying to doing.

    • @vanyadolly
      @vanyadolly 3 года назад +13

      Yes, I think it's so interesting because it isn't overtly romantic as most relationships like this are. They've never had the option to love each other. But something still kept them together for 150 years, and still keeps them coming back to each other. Something that transcends whatever they were to each other before. One of the tragedies at the end of the episode is that they again never got the chance to really figure out what they were to each other as two people who are capable of love.

      Wow! An interesting thing you just made me realize....in essence, Darla actually gets to save her “soul” as it were. She is actually redeemed in essence as she went from CHOOSING to give up her soul to become a vamp, to choosing not to. In a religious sense, this would provide her with a completely different ending the the human afterlife.

    • @jaycievictory8461
      @jaycievictory8461 3 года назад +5

      @@mrs.schmenkman I just went into a philosophical spiral above about this. Darla's human soul was seemingly pulled from hell leading me to question if what she'd done in her life really deserved that or if her death at the hands of a vampire made that inevitable. (If the latter, that makes every death of a human by vampire a truly horrific tragedy that should be averted at all costs). By this logic, at the end of this episode when she's turned against her will, her soul would be released to a heavenly afterlife. So, Angel did save her in the end 😪

      @The Fox Strikes They say having his soul in her body influences her. And the moment she gives birth she knows she won't be able to love him anymore. She's able to make that sacrifice cos she loves him with a selfless love. And she's only able to love selflessly cos of the influence of his soul. Like he's sharing her body, her blood, her oxygen, she's sharing his soul.
      We're left unknowing what her fate is after staking herself. But Connor sees his mother later in a scene which suggests her human soul found rest/redemption.

    What I like in the end is kind of how symbolic it is that it is Dru that is turning Darla, in front of Angel. Angel clearly has been focusing on Darla, and trying to save her. Like if he could save the person who made him a monster, maybe then he could gain some redemption for the bad he had done. Then in walks in Drusilla, a living embodiment of the worst that Angelus is capable of, and destroys that chance to save Darla. Kind of showing that despite his efforts to be redeemed, it is always going to be just out of his reach.

  • @anthony3557

    The Darla episodes are among my very favourites in the whole of 'Angel', and like you, I often forget how much is packed into this particular one. Julie Benz's singing is an absolute highlight here, to the extent that I mentioned it in a tweet on my last rewatch, and she responded that she was a bundle of nerves when they came to shooting that scene. I don't think it shows at all, overcome by how she conveys Darla's desperate need for an answer.
    And then there's that ending. Oh boy, are we in for a ride!

  • @partycitydumpster

    The way Darla looks at Angel while he's throwing a temper tantrum always gets me. She couldn't wait to get turned because having a soul and mortality was all downsides in her eyes. It was just like life as a vampire, except without any power and with a mountain of guilt plaguing her every day. But then she sees in Angel the thing having a soul has to offer: loving and being loved. No one had ever loved her that way, so why should she wanna stick around?

      The Oracles' commentary implies that Angel becoming human directly ushered in the beginning of the apocalypse and Buffy's imminent death in the timeline that never was, especially since he didn't demand to be changed back or show signs of missing his superpowers until it was clear to him that the end was going to be coming very soon and that his transformation had ushered in this end. I think that might have been the tipping point, given his guilt complex. He can't deal with it being his fault. He can deal with not being there for the apocalypse but can't handle his absence being what *starts* the apocalypse.
      ...Or maybe he's just not thinking straight because he's been getting more and more erratic and desperate lately. I mean, he's apparently seriously considering biting Darla in the last scene. His judgement has clearly gone to shit in a way that it hadn't in I Will Remember You

    'The Trial' is the episode that sets up the rest of the series; Holtz, Connor and Jasmine (hell, even bigger chess moves by Wolfram & Hart). It all begins here... with a man-pire trying to save the woman he claims not to love but definitely does (actions speak louder than words). Whether it was intentional or not, for me... Angel's foreshadowing always felt more retroactive (like they planted random seeds and would cherry pick them as needed as they continued on) whereas Buffy's felt truly like setup for future (as in they where beholden to play out what they had seeded) storylines. It all still works seemlessly, sometimes more so... the A to B to C, is PERFECTION! And makes Angel feel complete from 'City Of...' to 'Not Fade Away' 🖤

      @The Fox Strikes That makes sense but I do still think there was a selfless component there it want's just for his own redemption. Plus I think he does legitimately cares about Darla but you do have a good point. Although I still think that Angel despite his shortcomings which we all have is a selfless character. Like giving up being human and a life with Buffy two things he's always wanted to protect her life and the life of others. Or giving up the shanshu something he's again always wanted to take down the circle of the black thorn. Or giving up Connor his own son so Connor could have a good life ect. Anyways

    I like your point about how mortality doesn’t care. I know most of you who watch these are not religious or Christian. However as a Christian one of my favorite sayings is:
    God doesn’t give us what we can handle,
    He helps us handle what we are given.
    So many people think that God is somehow controlling every aspect of life, which is ridiculous if you look at it fully. Rather, we are out here in a trial and the truth is he doesn’t care what we do. He cares what we _become_ . Which means what we do is important only because of where it leads us in the end. So, when advice is provided to us, its not to control us, but it actually frees us from the results of making unwise decisions. In essence, making us free to be happy and enjoy the fruits of a good life.

It reflects how far both characters have cone so far, especially Darla by going through what Angel experienced after being re-ensouled. Even better, is that they had a relationship and deep connection that never truly went away. That's so interesting, Ian! I never considered that. Do you think Wolfram and Hart used the outcome of the trial to buy back Holt's life? Is the win transferrable like that? And if they need that to bring him back, what did they use to bring back Darla? Or are different powers involved since Holt was a human and Darla a.... Well, actually, she was a human too, come to think of it! They trick us in the premiere into think she's back as a demon.
    *Spoilers for s6 of Buffy*
    So the "essence" they pulled out of hell was her soul presumably? Which they put back in her body a la Buffy. Giles did say there are other ppl who could do what Willow did but you wouldn't want to meet them. Man, the parallels between Buffy and Darla really come constantly! Except inverted as you say. Buffy's soul is snatched from heaven, Darla's from hell. I guess suggesting Darla was a "bad" enough human to go there. OR do all human bodies that get taken over by demon have their souls automatically go to hell? That seems deeply unfair.
    I always wondered where Liam's soul was pulled from each time the curse takes effect.
    Great. Now I'm going to have thoughts all day. 😅

    • @Cristina5753
      @Cristina5753 3 года назад

      I’ve had that thought too of whether all people who are taken over by demons, like vampires, go to hell automatically. If it is a soul that offers us a chance at heaven, then people without souls can’t be part of heaven. Or do their souls go to like a purgatory waiting for the rest of them? Or do the souls just go to heaven or hell and the vampire is a more separate entity, like it kinda suggests in Lie to Me. Also, are they damned to hell because they chose to be a vampire? They chose to let a demon take them over, thereby accepting an eventual end in hell. What if people don’t get a choice and are turned? They don’t often know what they’re getting into, or are forced into it, like the girl in “School Hard”, who got kidnapped & turned into a vampire by Spike and Dru.

    SPOILER FOR SEASON 4
    Vamp Marv is so accurate I couldn't stop laughing.
    The way Angel treats Lindsay's feelings for Darla when compared to Angelus's taunting is exactly why I think people have a hard time discussing Angel and Angelus separate personalities and why it becomes such a complex issue to talk about.
    I like the closeup of Darla singing over the framed shot with Lorne and Angel, at least when it comes to a still shot. But I love that the director pushed in on her from the framed shot.
    The Indiana Jones references in Angel never bothered me because even Angelus takes note and asks Wesley why at one point in S4.
    I love the surprise ending in this episode. Never seen anyone whose guessed what is going to happen ahead of time.
    I find it interesting that people talk about how many writers some episodes have sometimes as when an episode is being broken down before the script is written, all writers are in on it as a group, so while one to five writers usually handle scripts depending on the episode, every writer handles it in terms of breaking an episode down.
    It's public accommodations for motel/hotels, as long as its occupants don't consider it their home. Fred considered her room at the Hyperion her place and Angel had to be invited in. I always assumed it was who lived there, not who owned it that mattered.
    If you look at the parallels at Buffy and Darla, Bangel becomes even more disturbing because in some ways even Angel probably doesn't realize why his attraction to Buffy was so instant.
    I don't think the real problem is Angel having an obsession with Darla that began when she showed up this season. I think its more about the guilt he felt about killing his sire back in BtVS S1 and how he never really dealt with it to the point of truly forgiving himself. On top of issues going into flashback time-periods; that's a lot of guilt. It's something Wesley, Cordelia and Gunn refuse to try to understand, even if the could understand.

    • @Buffy8Fan
      @Buffy8Fan 3 года назад +1

      @@yeshv1989 Ian and myself are both inferring that Angel and Angelus both have the same attitudes in those situations and that they are both more similar than lots of people wish to think. I wasn't saying Angel has no feelings, just that the difference between them isn't always opposite as some believe just because Angel has a soul and Angelus doesn't.

    • @yeshv1989
      @yeshv1989 3 года назад

      @@Buffy8Fan I thought the same too. I’ve always thought that the reason they seem so distinct is because Angel feels so guilty for his crimes as Angelus, that his guilt and shame have repressed his actual personality, resulting in the broody and morose person we’ve all come to know him as.
      In fact, one of my pet theories as to why the judge couldn’t burn Angelus back in season 2 of Btvs wasn’t because he didn’t have feelings for Buffy, but that his feelings no longer resembled anything human; leaving behind only the lust, obsession and a need to dominate and possess the person you have “feelings” for.
