    Fajar: Full evil. Kills children, creates junkies, no relationship with his subordinates, doesnt speak.
    Sean: Honorable evil. Hurts people but only by way of voluntary test. Respected for his strength and the people who survive his gauntlets are stronger people for it. Justifies his actions with might and excellence.
    Kuroki: Neutral. She knows what evil is and wangs to cleanse herself of that. She lives in full retreat contemplating her failures and losses. Doesnt hurt anyome but doesnt help anyone either.
    Jinfeng: Selfish good. She uses her gold power to make herself rich but she doesnt keep it all to herself. Her money and connections are used to enhance the community on the other side. She cant be considered full good because she still lines her own pockets, uses the stolen power for herself.
    Yang: Full good. He doesnt use the power he stole for anything beyond helping people.
    The deeper you go into the revenge, the better people you are fighting. By the time you get to the sanctuary you are beating up the kitchen staff, janitors, and nurses. Great storytelling even though they dont go into detail.

      Yang has some shady shit going on as well. A guest in the sanctuary tell you that some patients went missing. And the Kuroki's bodyguards you find in that psychedielic sequence are told to have "lost their mind".
      I guess Yang can not heal everybody fully, especially their minds. So he sent these people to Kuroki instead of disclosing it to anybody.

    I know the competition out there isn't really monumental, but I was thinking how Sifu probably has the best story and storytelling in the entire beat-em-up genre.

  • @Mathenaut
    @Mathenaut 2 года назад +80

    To better understand the ending, it helps to look at the parallels between the very beginning fight and the final fight. They take place in the exact same setting - even literally the exact same spot that Sifu was killed. This changes the framing of what the video describes at 0:55 in an important way.
    In the original cutscene, it is clear that Yang has the talisman and the child does not. It had to have been passed at some point (also note that in-fight dialog suggests that Yang is the only one who actually knows who the protagonist actually is aside from the uniform).
    Wude translates to 'Martial Morality' (literally). It isn't enough just to be able to beat people up, one must overcome the constraints of both body and mind to achieve a greater state of being.
    By losing the pendant and allowing (note: protag deliberately took that shot) that hit to the chest, they overcame the fear of death. By refusing to kill, they overcame anger and the desire for revenge - the same feelings that overcame Yang.
    The final moment of the fight echoes Sifu's description of Wude. 'Your hands move fast as lighting, and the other person does not want to fight anymore'.
    If we follow this full circle, that final moment also parallels the last scene of the opening fight. Yang has the charm, the protag is dead > The protag is next seen alive, charm in hand.

      @@asianboy9280 That's what I gathered too. I don't think Yang gave the immortality talisman to the child though. • @Mathenaut
      @Mathenaut 2 года назад +4

      @@PresentHeroes
      We see the child very clearly in the beginning, from every perspective, including a zoom in on the hands when they first exit from hiding. It is nowhere on their person.
      Each boss has unique dialog when you revive in front of them, where only Yang actually identifies the amulet and knows what is happening.
      Yang's dialog vs the others in general suggests that he knows things about you and what is happening that the others do not, even though everyone is familiar with the school. This would suggest his involvement in things we haven't seen from the protagonist's perspective.

    • @PresentHeroes
      @PresentHeroes 2 года назад +1

      @@Mathenaut neither was it on Yang. We also see him from every perspective. Yang knowing about it is plausible as he trained under old Sifu the longest, to the point where he got close enough to know about the Earth talisman and what it does. Young Sifu having it seems to have more to do with his bloodline as Jinfeng suggests during the initial meeting with her.

    From what i interpret Yang made a deal with all 4 boses to steal and kill the guardians of the talisman just to built the sanctuary in order to save people but end up not seeing that the world they run at turned more bad from Jafar's health and drug cartel, Jianfeng focusing on Kuroki's art musuem than helping the others and then Shaun's burning club exclusive so i think killing all of them will just make things worst, sparing them and making them run more school would be more good and then become Sifu since u all defeat them.

    Sorry but no, Sifu. The five bosses don't deserve redemption.
    Yang, angry that he couldn't save his family, murders slits the throat of a child (one he helped teach himself) after killing his/her father. You don't get to claim "family matters" when your actively orphaning and ordering hits on kids.
    Jin Feng's corporation is also a secret assassin din with a global map showing surveillance and pending hits. Sean started a fire cult, Farjar is a drug lord, Kuroki/Himiko seems the most improved--but it's a veneer to a sadistic underside. They all were corrupted by the powers they stole--as the lore indicates.
    I was completely in Wude when my intention was to kill them all for the sake of taking power away from the corrupt, improving society, and getting justice for my slain fam. The twist forgiveness run at the end really felt like it came out of no where and only served to complicate an other-wise focused story.

    Seems like a cheesy kung fu movie from the 80s to 90's. The art style and gameplay is good but the story was a bit meeeh in my opinion. It has nothing much to offer beside the good art style and gameplay, the story is lacking. It would've been nice if they added more multiple endings or an added an option to fight the bosses in whatever order you like to see those endings. Overall the revenge plot could've been fleshed out more, the characters added more back story etc. If you ever saw or read the anime/manga "Blade of the Immortal" it has one of the best revenge plot ever shown in media. The developers should've taken notes on that material.

      It’s clear this game is not made for its story but rather its gameplay and originality in terms of style and I think it should be judged more on that rather than the story telling. However I do agree that I feel like their should be more endings and maybe they should’ve added a bit more context into the game. You never know Yang has a wife and child or any of the guardians backstory without reading from the board. Perhaps in the sequel (if there is one) we get more of that

  • @Longshotsz

    this has got to be one of the dumbest and dullest revenge narratives I've played.
    the opening before you control the protagonist is fantastic, as is the opening montage and the visuals and direction of how narrative moments are led up to. the problem, narrative wise, is that the game is not trying to seem more complex than it actually is. it puts you playing as someone who kills for revenge. ok got it. but then by sparing a powerful individual you have changed them for the better, what. how. who, and what about everyone you murdered just to maybe change their minds. the yang twist changes nothing about the story besides being a cool reveal and most bosses are poorly balanced (especially 2 & 3) who are either too easy or goes against the games basic mechanics. if we've already entered the gameplay section, then the camera has got to be the worst I've seen in a game. constantly being blocked and preventing me from playing the game fairly.
    I think the game at its highs is a 9. but its lbetween a 6-7

      They aren't the ones changing once you spare them.. its for the main characters growth.. also yea I would say the balancing is finicky on each boss but there is going to be a harder mode

      I disagree with the balancing of the boss fights. Each boss is harder as you go along. I never found any boss fight “easy”
