  • Steel Will D2 mini Cut Jack strop experiment. How long can an edge last on D2, well mediocre D2. In this experiment I'll sharpen this knife once at 15 dps. I'll then maintain the edge using only strops. This is part 1 of this experiment where the D2 will be treated to normal work use and maintained using 16 um cbn from Bark River and 6 um DMT dia-paste. Just how long will it go? That's what I'm going to find out.

I dont mind d2 it works great for me, but i like you stropp after use, with any steel even if I didnt use it much I just do a couple passes atleast. I found through the testing that, these steals do great, but they dont line up in the order that I thought they did with edge retention. Thanks for the video bud. 👍

I just received my Civivi Elementum Fixed in D2. Factory edge was beautifully ground, but not really sharp. Difficult to open an envelope. I spent a great deal of time on my 30 y.o. HandAmericanMade mahogany and veg tanned leather strop. I used 2.5 micron SiC dry hone powder on the roughout side followed by finish stropping on the smooth side with nothing on it. Edge now shaves AND still looks like the factory edge. I saw a recent interview with Dr. Larrin Thomas, the Magnacut inventor, discussing different blade steels. He said D2 performs better with a 20-25 degree per side angle than with a 15-19 degree per side edge. That's why I decided to strop it sharp instead of re-profiling the edge on my KME. Thanks for this video.

I use my s30v 940 everyday like this and I've only actually used my stones on it twice in the last year.
I strop it every couple days with 1 micron dmt paste on a random piece of leather and it comes back to a good paper cutting working edge for months. I like shaving sharp like the next guy but people over sharpen their knives for no reason. The first month of use it usually comes back shaving after stropping but after that period of time, If I can blow through cardboard and plastic in everyday task it's good enough.

    • @evictioncarpentry2628

@@Outpost_76 that would be cool too. I think people are underestimating things, or not using the right products, for example, diamond paste for high carbide steels. I can strop S30V for instance with green compound on leather and it does almost nothing but strop it with some diamond paste, boom, back to hair shaving, and like you know, will continue to come back for some time. So maybe that's a reason people think they need to keep sharpening because what they're used to using for simpler steels isn't working.

    Hey Gerald
Another interesting test, and I enjoyed your vid man. Steel Will's mini cutjack is literally the knife that broke me from China D2. I actually liked the design so much, that I purchased a second one thinking my 1st one missed a heat treat, as it was a trashed apex by noon one a busy day, even after many sharpenings it did not improve. The second one was not much better.
Now if Steel Will offered that knife in "budget" steel like 12c27 or AUS 8, I'd still have it. Some of the Steel Will designs are great, (like the Modus) and of course the Italian models. If they used better steel like Cruwear in that mini cutjack, I'd pay 100.00 no problem. I love the mini cutjack design for EDC.
Steel will needs to move away from D2 and M390 (too expensive, ho-humm HT). I think their latest offering is in s35vn.
But I'll be following to see how far your cutjack goes. Its been impressive so far, my guess is you are a WAAYYYYY better sharpener than I am 😀

I bought the Cut Jack in order to increase my knife collection. I knew it was new but still went and used the Sharpal to improve the sharpness. Then I must admit that blade is like a razor! Will it do what you did ? I don't know? Buy a Sharpal then redo the test!

I swear by my strops. I strop at the end of the day even after light use, just less passes, or maybe just a couple swipes on my 1 micron to put that "sticky edge" back on it. Eventually you will have to put metal to stone as you develop chips, but you can go a pretty long time without it, and some steels respond better to stropping than others. Which brings me to this..when you do that Maxamet testing...how does IT respond to stropping? My guess is it may not respond quite as easily as that D2, but that is just guess, lol.

If you dont need hair popping sharp, just using a ceramic rod will keep it cutting for a long time. It gives a smoother edge, but will still slice cardboard effortlessly. My knife is very thin behind the edge which helps, with the rod only you don't have a hair popping wire edge, but will still slice paper no problem. This is just what I've found on my D2 blades.

    • @tonycanniffe2360

Hawaii Knife And Gear Thanks mate. I have the Spyderco UF stone and a field sharpener with a rod. I’ve noticed the polishing effect of the Spyderco. And I remember a Cliff Stamp hypothesis, that very light pressure on a ceramic increased edge retention. Not time efficient bc it was many, many strokes.
I kinda forgot about using the ceramic, just tended to go to the strops. I’ll give it a go.
      Mahalo!

    • @hawaiiknifeandgear5531
      @hawaiiknifeandgear5531 5 лет назад +1

Yes, that is precisely how I would describe the edge would be "polished" rather than truly "sharp". Laying the blade at the flattest angle possible without actually having it touch the rod to the spine of the knife. I would do this every few days, but never need to actually sharpen it. A few weeks ago I did finally break down and re-apex the edge back to hair popping sharp on the diamond stones, and it stayed that way for a few weeks, and stropping only would bring it back each time after a few days of heavy cardboard cutting.

Looking at getting a Boker Plus Strike auto at some point but they offer different steel options now in D2 and S30V. I've never owned a knife in D2 but have several in S30V.
